Thirty-three years ago today the longest game in professional baseball began. Some of you older guys will remember that on that Saturday night before Easter, the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket hosted the Rochester Red Wings. After 32 innings the score remained tied, 2-2, and the game was suspended after 4 a.m. by an angry league president, who had been telephoned while sleeping. There were 19 fans remaining in the stadium, all of whom received lifetime passes to future Pawtucket games.

Rochester scored a run in the top of the seventh and Pawtucket tied it at 1 by plating a run in the bottom of the ninth. Each team scored a run in the 21st inning with wade Boggs, who went 4 for 12 in the game, doubled home a run for the Sox. Jim Umbarger, who went on to have a decent MLB career mostly with Texas, then entered the game and pitched 10 innings of scoreless relief.

The game was resumed June 23 before a sellout crowd that watched the contest end in less than 20 minutes when Rochester failed to score in the top of the 33rd and Pawtucket scored a run in the bottom of the frame to win.

Bob Ojeda got the win by pitching one inning and Steve Grilli, who had pitched in the majors prior to this game and was hoping to return to MLB took the loss. Ojeda was the sole survivor of a 1993 boating accident that claimed the lives of two of his Indian teammates and Grilli is the father of current Pirate pitcher Jason Grilli.

ONe of my favorite games was played by the Phillies. It was the resuming of a World Series game that was called because of rain. The Phillies won. The thing that was so good about it was how short the game was and all the tension created by a three inning game. You didn't have to sit through 5 hours of bullshit. ONe hour and the game was over. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

While not renown for its lenghth, next month will be the 55th anniversary of Harvey Haddix's 1 hit loss to the Braves in 1959. I believe it's still the longest no-hitter in MLB history since it went into the 13th inning.

It may have been the best pitching perfortmance in major league history. Twelve perfect innings, retiring the first 36 batters. Lew Burdette was his counterpart for the Milwaukee Braves.

In the top of the i3th the first batter reached on error, was sacrificed to second, and Hank Aaron was intentionally walked. The next batter (I think it was Eddie Matthews)hit a homer that went down as a one-run double because he passed Aaron on the bases.

olivant, the Penguins are up, 2-1 in their second round series against the Rangers. Fleury had consecutive shutouts. When he's hot, there's none better, but when he's Mr. Hyde, it could be rough.

I know Kly. For a couple of seasons now I think the Pens have been running hot and cold and it's not due to a particular player.

Well, they're hot right now. It was a little scary in the third period when Fleury allowed a soft goal to bring the Rangers within a goal. I think the Pens got a little lucky with the matchups. If the Flyers had beaten the Rangers, I think they would have had a better chance of knocking off Pittsburgh. I'm hoping that Montreal can beat Boston tonight and finish them off in 6.

Pistons owner Tom Gores evidently had no moral issues with playing "hide the salami" with his brother's wife but was opposed to using amnesty on Ben Gordon because he didn't want to pay someone for not working. He thought it was wrong.

As a result we lose our first round pick in what should be a great draft.

Way to go Gores! Nice work Dumars!

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- The Supreme Court on Monday left in place a ban on sports gambling in New Jersey, rebuffing an attempt to bring betting on professional and college sporting events to Atlantic City casinos and the state's racetracks.

Went to see a minor league baseball game the other night. We have a team called the Brooklyn cyclones in Coney Island.

Baseball is really not my thing. But I must confess I had a good time. They do a lot of things to help entertain little kids not baseball related before and in between innings.

They really know how to promote their team and the game in general.

We paid 27 dollars for field level on the first base side. It was cheap very cheap it was great. Before the game went to Gargiulo's restraunt for dinner it was great.

I go to Yankee stadium and get the same seat and the extra service bracelet it's a lot of money.

Atlantic City just hosted its first Ironman Triathalon. They say it was a success, but the local newspapers are full of stories of traffic nightmares. The bike section was on the AC Expressway with a 2x loop out to Hammonton where it collided with the annual Blueberry Festival. Not good planning.

ESPN has done plenty to annoy me over the years, but this speech by Stuart Scott last night was magnificent. His battle with cancer has been a long journey, but what a courageous fighter.

This speech definitely puts sports into its proper perspective.

I post on a soccer coaching site. One of the threads was under 7 development for youth players.

The last one I made I want to share with you guys.

"When my son was 9 we also found ave J park. It was in a Haitian neighborhood in Brooklyn. Him and I would play their practically when ever we had free time. They played their from morning until it got dark 7 days a week.

We were the only white people there. They made us feel right at home. Especially when they saw we could both really play the game. Later I got a lot of players from there for my team. Whch lead me to also training their players in the central Brooklyn league and all black soccer league.

I used to go under a lot of different names on soccer sites.

One was PassDBall I got that because their guys would hold the ball too much when they played so I was constantly telling them to "pass the ball man"

I had always dreamed of my son Vic and I both playing on the same adult when he became an adult from when he was born . We actually made that dream come true we did that for two years play together."

It just brought back good memories for me, and I wanted to share them.

Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens just got suspended for 2 games for the assault on his wife. Based on that, I would think the NFL must be suspending players left and right for their off-field behavior. Yes?

Well, Cleveland sports had a decent run. In May, the Browns drafted former Heisman winner and college phenom Johnny Manziel in the college draft. Less than 24 hours later it was announced the team's best player, Josh Gordon, failed another drug test.

Fast forward to July and the city again had a positive story with prodigal son LeBron James deciding to return to the Cleveland Cavs. Now we are back in the news b/c some idiot "fan" decided to do this.

Taney Little League from Philly takes the field, representing the Mid-Atlantic, in Williamsport against Nashville, TN. Taney advanced behind the pitching of one of a dazzling thirteen year-old girl, Mo'ne Davis.

The Midwest is represented by a talented team from Chicago. It's good to see inner-city teams advance as access to baseball has been severely limited in those areas for years. Maybe the RBI program is working, and this could generate more interest in baseball among the city kids.

Philly v. Chicago...that is cool. I hope Mo'Ne can hang tough. She may need Tommy John surgery in a few years.

I was sorry to see Rhode Island eliminated because I enjoyed watching their coach and their pudgy right fielder, who hit homers and line drives every time up. After their loss the coach gave a moving talk to the despondent team that reflected the best that sports, in general, and Little League, in particular, offers.

The winner of PA/NV tomorrow stands a good chance of representing the US in the championship game on Sunday. The loser plays the winner of TX/IL, and the winner of that will have to beat the PA?NV winner twice.

Absolutely. My wife and kids are back from the shore and in about ten minutes we're headed to Williamsport to cheer on Mo'Ne and the Taney team. Most of us try to get there each year to take in some games; it's a great place. And with Pennsylvania battling for the finals it makes it all the more fun.

By the way, Mo'Ne Davis is on the cover Sports Illustrated this week.

Jackie Robinson West team from the south side of Chicago got better ratings on television than both the Cubs and Sox the other night! Lots of people pulling for them in the city.

Same in Philly with Taney. These two teams meat tonight, and I would love to go, but I just can't tonight. The Jackie Robinson team is very dynamic.

I'm amazed at the composure of these 12-13 year olds, who play in front of large crowds and maintain composure and focus. They estimated that 30,000-35,000 people were at the game last night. We were packed like sardines in the stands and the hill beyond the outfield was crowded to the highway.

The Las Vegas team is an offensive juggernaut. They came into the game averaging 3 runs per inning. I was very proud of the PA effort in keeping the game close to the final inning. They had opportunities to tie or go ahead, but NV held strong.
