Here's the photo:

We're to name 7 of the 10.

I'm currently going with (from left to right around the tables):

1. Amato
2. JB
3. Pranno
4. Gagliano
5. Amabile
6. Potenza
7. Battaglia (total winger here)
8. DeStefano
9. Cerone
10. Ferraro

Alright everybody, tear me apart. Seriously. I just need to have my curiosity satisfied, so any and all suggestions are welcome.

Bottom line, we should be able to do this.

You all need to stop throwing out random Outfit names and consider what guys were "Accardo" guys and what guys came to fame years later under Giancana. In the 1950s, Cerone was still a soldier...Joe Gags probably wasn't even made yet.

1. Amato
2. JB
3. Pranno
4. Frank Buccieri
5. Frank "The X" Esposito
6. Potenza
7. Dominic "Little Libby" Nuccio
8. Murray Humphreys
9. Cerone or Ricca
10. Ferraro or Gus Alex or Ross Prio

This the late fifties at the earliest. Cerone was definitely boss of Elmwood Park by that point and Joe Gags was his number two.

The biggest problem is that we have limited pictures for a lot of these guys so it's tough to get an accurate gauge of who is who.

Exactly. I was just taking a shot in hopes we could get some replies. I'll keep looking to see if this picture shows up some other place.

Thanks

The guy with the glasses is not DeStefano....DiVarco maybe but im not sure because heres a photo of DiVarco from the late 50's and it doesnt look a bit similar(his hair is waaaay darker)...My guess is James Adduci from the west side

First from the left Caesar DiVarco,Jackie Cerone and Ross Prio pictured here in front of the McClellan Rackets Committee, 1958.

My guess is Amato,Accardo,Pranno,Gagliano,dont know,dont know,dont know,James Adduci,Cerone or Frank LaPorte,Nick Palermo(with cigar)

Starting to wonder if dice blower is DeGrazia.

Here's him all the way on the right with Accardo from way back...

Here's a picture of Esposito in 1962:

I don't think he's in the ANP photo, but of course I could be wrong.

Here's a shot of the Doms (Brancato/DiBella/Nuzzo):

I'm not seeing Nuccio in the ANP photo, but I think there's a shot that #4 is DiBella.

"The Boys In Chicago Heights" by Matt Luzi - great book, well documented. Would highly recommend.

I still think the guy with the glasses could be Messino. It's definitely not Giancana. Messino was with with Cerone for several years and if the bald guy is Cerone than it would make sense for Messino to be right next to him.

You also have to consider he has glasses, no hat, and a cigar in his mouth. I'm still not convinced it isn't him.

Yeah I just don't think it looks like him. I could be wrong though. Also not convinced he was heavy enough at this point to be with these guys.

He was close to Cerone and he was arguably as high up as Amato or Pranno was at the time.

Agree to disagree. He was Jack's gopher. I don't think he was very high status until late in life.

Is this a legit photo of Aiuppa? If so, I think #9 (whom we've pegged up until now as Cerone or Ricca) just could be Doves.

EDIT: Nevermind; it's Allen Glick. Duh.

Are there any younger photos of Aiuppa out there?

I know there's one of him testifying in front of congress, but I can't seem to find it.

Who is that, anyway? It seems half the fun of this wretched photo is all of the new stuff you come across while researching it. For instance, I'd never seen this:

While not helpful for our purposes, it's a pretty crazy story, and I'd never come across it before. Full story can be found here.

Wow great find with the piece on the Bucceri brothers...I had no idea that was them. Angelo and Jimmy LaPietra were protoge's of those brothers. Fifi always sounded like a sadistic guy.

I've wondered the same. Lack of photographic evidence makes it really difficult. I'm not sure there's anything more I can research, honestly. It may take someone close to one of the pictured to piece it all together. Which gets my goat, of course.

That said, I have a suspicion that we're making a wrong assumption, perhaps Amato or Cerone, that is making it all the harder.

It'd be nice if Fosco would at least respond to guesses summarily. Say, however many correct guessed would be fair enough - he was doing it before in the ANP thread.

Here's the latest guess I've posited to Fosco:

1. Amato
2. JB
3. Pranno
4. DiBella
5. Buccieri
6. Potenza
7. Nuccio
8. Adduci
9. Cerone
10. Blasi

The biggest question marks are of course 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10.

I see similarities in the eyes of known pics of DiBella and #4, so I think I might be on to something there. And DiBella makes sense with Joe Amato at the table.

#5 is a killing me, because he stands out but doesn't seem to resemble anybody else I've been able to compare photos to. I'm leaning Buccieri, but those that have mentioned Fischetti (no pics to compare) warrant consideration. DeGrazio is another possibility, but again, no photos from the era are available for comparison. Where's a photo of Fischetti, for Christ's sake?

#7 I've got NOTHING here. NOTHING. I'm guessing Nuccio because someone else has and I haven't a clue, other that I'm pretty damn sure #7 and #8 AREN'T Humphreys.

#8 See #7

#10 Blasi just might be #10, but nobody's an easy match, that's for sure. Ferraro? I don't see this as guy as Messino, that's for sure.

I've guessed at least twice to Fosco in the past couple months and I know that funkster has posted on the board over there guessing but he hasn't even replied to any of them. I guess he is butt hurt that someone questioned his identification of Pranno (even though Fosco ended up being right).

Buccieri's hair wasn't that white at this time and he almost always wore glasses. Didn't really seem like the guy who would wear an open shirt in public, either. Fischetti on the other hand:

Nice find on the Fischetti pic? Where'd you get it, anyway?

Hair and skin tone definitely match #5.

What's up with Fosco these days? Is he sleeping in a trunk somewhere?

Also, I do believe that #5 is Johnny Formosa.

I'm also wondering if #10 isn't Vincent Inserro.

Now tell me if #9, instead of Cerone, might be Jimmy Catuara? He's on page 81 here.

It doesn't look like Inserro to me but whatever. It doesn't look like Fosco is ever going to reveal it anyway.

This is Needles Gianola, so draw your own conclusions:

Wow, those 2 photos don't jibe at all. When was the photo you posted taken? Another case of journalistic mistaken identity?

EDIT: BTW, the Gianola pic that I linked to appears to be from 1961, just about when our ANP pic was taken.

And I don't know why I just now thought of this but #10 (glasses, cigar) has to be Sam DeStefano. I know somebody briefly mentioned #8 as potentially being Sam but I never even thought of #10 until just now.

Something about this picture does look like #10:

I had never really considered him for #10 either. Jeebus.

This is Needles Gianola, so draw your own conclusions:

Yep based on this picture he ain't in the Fosco pic. Back to the drawing board.

On this picture next to Accardo on the right is Nick Palermo, but the thing is this picture is taken in the late 70's(i think) so Plaermo is much older but i see a big resemblance with nubmer 10

Too bad i cant find a bigger picture....

These photos of DeStefano are from the 1960s. Fosco's photo is from the 1940s.

DeStefano was never in Accardo's inner circle or on par with some of the other guys at that table given the time period of the photo. If the photo is from the 1940s, DeStefano spent most of that decade in Leavenworth. His star didn't really rise until the late 1950s and even then, DeStefano was mostly held at arms length by Giancana and the Taylor Street regime in power at that point.

Snakes is right. The photo, as best as can be surmised from the cars in the background, wasn't taken prior to '56.

And in the late 50s, Mad Sam was what, direct to Ricca? That's what I've heard, anywho. Wouldn't be surprising to see him at the table whatsoever.

From 2 months ago in the actual ANP thread, a poster by the name of Antillar posited the following, and Fosco confirmed 5 of them were correct:

"Here's my list of names, from left to right:
1. Joe Amato
2. Joe Batters Accardo
3. Queenie Simonelli
4. Joe Gagliano? (smiling man with cap)
5. Rocco Fischetti
6. unknown (younger handsome man smiling)
7. unknown (man with back turned)
8. Nick Palermo
9. James Adduci (with glasses)
10. Jackie Cerone
11. Willie Messino (smiling man with sunglasses and cigar)"

So which 5 were correct? Amato, Tuna and Cerone are probably the safest bets, leaving 2 of Gagliano, Fischetti, Palermo, Adduci and Messino as being confirmed correct(#3 of course being Pranno and not Simonelli).

This is Joe Gags (pictured below) but it's an more "recent" photo of him than Fosco's. Not really sure what Palermo or Adducci look like so I can't really discount them either. Fischetti seems to be a popular choice for open-shirt guy so no real argument from me there. I thought that cigar guy was Messino for a while but switched it to Mad Sam and I'm maybe a little too unreasonably confident in that guess.

I've seen this picture before, but have never seen the others identified. I feel like the guy on the far right is in the Fosco picture...but could be way off.

Greetings from a newby.
I just wanted to say that JJB and Snakes are onto something with DeStefano as #10. I would not have guessed it because he aged so poorly and so fast. But if you compare the shape of the ears it is an excellent match.

Second, both Fosco and Brashler made mistakes with Pranno.
I have sent Fosco 5 different photos from the Trib archives well as this link to a guy selling reprints from the SunTimes photo morgue.
Pranno shots
Pranno had a huge cleft chin that you couldn't miss. The guy Brashler labled as Potenza, is actually Pranno. Most of those SunTimes photos come from the trial that put Pranno away for the rest of his life. I don't think they got them switched.

Next, Nick Palermo (mob plumber). He is in the shot. Nick's signature feature was cotton white hair with black eyebrows.
I'll leave it to you guys to figure out which one he is.

I actually ran across the same thing when I was doing some research recently. At first I took Fosco's word for it when he claimed it was Pranno but I found some other photos which show the purported Pranno. I wouldn't figure that multiple sources got it wrong, so I would guess that the guy in the photo is actually Potenza, I guess.

Pretty sure I have seven (possibly nine) now that PK has hinted at Nick Palermo but since Fosco apparently isn't accepting any more guesses (I've sent three with no response) I am not sure if I will submit.

I think #3 is Simonelli, geez he looks just like the guy.

I am also pretty sure I know who #6 is and no one has even brought up his name.

He was only the handsomest man in the outfit.

#3 isn't Simonelli only because Fosco has already said he isn't. Fosco claimed it was Pranno and cites his unnamed source as saying so. I would wager that it's actually Potenza and somebody got the Roccos mixed up again.

For the record, I do not think #6 is Nicoletti.

Although who knows, #3 could very well be Simonelli but we'll never know because it doesn't look like he is gonna answer anytime soon.

Snakes - here's a link to some pictures from Wayne Johnson's blog. Might want to take a look. At the bottom of each page look at "older post." Two or three pages of some pictures. Most you've probably seen, but you might come across something that would help identify these guys. Good luck.

I am armed with some new intel per a response from Fosco himself. I submitted the following:

1. Amato
2. Tuna
3. Pranno
4. Gagliano
5. Fischetti
6. Potenza
7. Ferriola (back turned pants wet; was a wild guess)
8. Palermo
9. Adduci
10. Cerone
11. DeStefano

He had this to say:

Quote:
Gag's is not there. Only in Ferriola's wettest dream would he be at such a gathering at that period in time. DeStefano was Paul R's guy, therefore, he would have no place in this setting. Perhaps if Paul was present, DeStefano might be there. wink

But maddeningly, no mention of how many correct. Swap out Ricca for Cerone, and bingo? It can't be that easy, can it?

Could Aducci be 5th from left with his shirt open?

The hair, nose and eyebrows match, as does the pinkie ring.

ok, pranno is behind batters, fischetti is the one with his shirt open, wearing a watch. the bald headed guy sitting away from batters, and, next to the guy with the sunglasses looks more like giancana than cerone.

ok, you're right he wasn't called parrot nose for nothing, now, next to fishetti is pranno, on fishettis right. so it's

1- amato
2- batters
3-potenza
4-behind Potenza- unknown
5- fishetti
6-pranno
7-unknown
8-unknown
9-unknown
10-giancana
11-aducci

im pretty sure about 1 through6.

My main reason is that Cerone was always a bit chubbier and the guy in the pic looks consistent with Jack's weight. Who knows though, you could be right.

Alright, since we drug this up again, here are my guesses with supporting photos.

I tried to use photos from the era, in the cases of Nicoletti and DeStefano I used multiple images that span the period.
I have no guesses for #7, the soggy bottom boy or #8, pencil neck.
I have only changed my mind on one in the 9 months since I sent my list to Fosco (and received no reply). I came around to the notion that the cigar man was DeStefano.

Here's my guesses:
1. Amato
2. Accardo
3. Potenza (I used to think it was Simonelli too until I saw that Rocco Potenza looks even more like this guy)
4. UNK (not Gagliano, doesn't look like him to me)
5. Palermo
6. UNK (not Nicoletti, was thinking possibly Lombardi, but still too many differences)
7. UNK
8. Adduci
9. Cerone
10. UNK (does sort of look like DeStefano though, I'll give you that)

I don't think that's Nicoletti, but the Palermo guess is a good one.

Not a guess. I knew Nick when I worked at a jewelery store in Elmwood Pk, back in the 80s. I just knew him as Nicky the plumber. He would come around with stuff that needed fixing about once a month. He would hang around the workroom all day chewin the fat. I didn't realize he was Nick Palermo until his wake.
I knew Nicoletti by sight as well. I cooked or bussed in a half dozen restaurants in Northlake, Melrose and Franklin Parks ca. 72-76 we knew to keep his cigarette lit and not to spill coffee on him.

That's definitely not Chuckie Nicoletti - as a young man, he had light hair. I wonder if that might instead be Joe Fischetti or perhaps even a younger Ross Prio.

I would say that could be Aducci based on looks, though I wonder if a state rep of that caliber would be stupid enough to play cards with a bunch of hoods in a public park. It could also be Rocco Fischetti who also had hair like that.

I think that could be DeStefano as the last guy - that's a great guess.

For what it's worth, Fosco mentioned to me in an email that Gags definitely wasn't in the pic, and intimated that the only way DeStefano would have been in the pic were Ricca to be in it as well. Hence, Cerone/Mooney would be Ricca.

EDIT: Not that any of this matters, as Fosco's probably too busy defending Bill Cosby (yeah, he seems to have lost the plot a bit) to respond anyway.

Adduci was either an associate or an actual member of the old Grand Avenue Crew in the 1930s before he went into politics. The Outfit in its heyday had politicians and probably judges who were actual made members.

Yeah but even so, guys in office needed to be smart and not associate so openly with hoods.

I believe Adduci resigned his post before he was to be indicted on conspiracy charges. Perhaps this could be "after" he had resigned and there was no more need to hide his association?

First that isn't Fischetti.
Here's pic of the Fischetti brothers while Charlie was alive (died early in '51)

We know Fosco's pic in no earlier than '56 ('56 Belair in the pic)

Joey(right) is already balding and paunchy.

Next, we don't necessarily see every one in attendance, just a bunch of guys around one picnic table. Anyone else could be milling around.
Third, don't assume that this is some kind of meeting, it may just be a picnic.

In '56, Joe B held the last July 4th party at his home. In '58 they started holding them at Jackie the Lackey's house.

Perhaps they held the 1957 party at a picnic grove.
As such it was a social event and anyone who didn't have a contract out on them may have been there.

They were pretty open about their associations. Roland Libonati defended Capone and the rest of his Outfit buddies even while he sat in Congress.

Good points all around - I am definitely wrong on Fischetti. Someone should send this photo to a John Binder or someone similar and get their guesses.

I'm convinced that Fosco doesnt fucking know.

No way #10 is Giancana. Photographs of him during 1959 Senate Rackets Committee show him still having a full head of hair.

#10 is either Ricca or Cerone, if anybody at all; I say that because Fosco may have set the bar at 7 of 10 because 3 of them might be virtually impossible to guess or in reality not really outfit guys.

Was Palermo ever a made guy? I always understood he was an Accardo buddy and perhaps merely an associate.

EDIT: That's gotta be Cerone. The guy in the photo is obviously short, and Cerone was like 5'6, not to mention Senate Racket hearing photos from '58 show the exact same dome and hairline.

Sam has a rug on at the senate hearings, but if you check the photos from Toni's wedding (about the same time)
Giancana Auction
he still has hair up the backside of his head and a wisp of hair on top.

If you search for Ricca in the corbis images, you'll see that he was completely gray by this time.

I realize Sam Destefano had a lot of pull with his rackets, but would he really be sitting in the same table with important people and bosses like Accardo, etc? I think he was more like Ricca's boy instead of Tuna's.

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

For the record, Binder thinks it's DeStefano too. He's actually contacted Fosco about the photo but (surprise, surprise) he got no reply. He noted Amato, Accardo, and Cerone, too. He thinks he knows a couple more but didn't reveal who.

But I overlayed the destefano with glasses foto and flickered the layers. It was incredible how many points lined up.
I don't have the tech to put together a gif animation, but if anyone wants to try, I'll be happy to send a matched set.

Check out the earlobes. There are similarities, but that doesn't indicate much. My real concern is that the guy with the cigar looks half-way normal !

Facially, it does look like DeStefano, but questions still remain for a couple of factors: 1) DeStefano's hair was still dark when the photo was taken c1958/59; 2) DeStefano had thick hair and this person's hair doesn't seem all that thick.

On the other hand, DeStefano did have some sort of business arrangement with Accardo or at least kicked up to him. DeStefano also lived in Elmwood Park. He only lived a mile and a half from Cerone (DeStefano at 1656 N Sayre Ave and Cerone at 2000 N 77th Ave), so if it is him it makes sense that they were seated next to each other.

So to update my list, here it is:
Here's my guesses:
1. Joe Amato
2. Accardo
3. Rocco Potenza
4. UNK
5. Nick Palermo
6. Anthony Centracchio
7. UNK (looks like Cowboy Mirro)
8. James Adduci
9. Jack Cerone
10. Sam DeStefano

I highly doubt that Centracchio is there. He would have only been in his twenties at the time and was nowhere near the level of these guys.

Binnie, Faithful - I don't know, either, just guessing. I've not made much of an effort to find pictures of DeStefano, but I'll look around. Very good comments by everyone. If Prof. Binder doesn't know, I have no idea who would.

I sent the picture to a contact in Chicago but did not get a response. I guess these guys get tired of people "picking their brain."

I have a Tribune article about DeStefano "kicking-up" to Accardo.

Fosco claimed it wasn't DeStefano because he wouldn't have been seen around Accardo... whatever. Obviously he doesn't know who all of the guys in the photo are or else he would have responded to the myriad of requests he has received. He was definitely wrong on the Pranno/Potenza debate so that also leads me to believe he doesn't know the rest.

Hmmm could also be his brother Mario.

I think it's much more likely it's his brother. Was he made at the time of the photo? If so, then it makes much more sense.

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

I've thought that #6 resembled Centracchio, but then I thought the same thing as you, namely: why would he be in that photo with the bosses?

However, we don't know who or what's outside the frame of that photo, and #6 is definitely a younger guy - around 30 isn't far-fetched. AC was born in 1929, IIRC.

FWIW, Centracchio's eyes are a close match to #6. I think it's a possibility.

Snakes, can you think of another guy circa 30 years of age who's more likely to be 6?

And if that's AC, could #4 be Infelise or Ferriola? (This is a total winger here, but #4's been driving me mad...) I've had no luck finding younger photos of either.

EDIT: I always understood that Destefano was never made, which would make unlikely that brother Mario was.

If this is a casual gathering then it wouldn't surprise me to see a son or nephew or something to that affect there. It doesn't appear to be an Outfit-exclusive gathering. It's very possible that some of these guys are civilians. Also, it looks like some women (wives/girlfriends?) are in the background although it's not known if they are with Accardo and friends. If they were, it would not be out of the ordinary for the times to have the men together on one side and the women together on another.

The location could also be a clue; Fosco stated that the location that it was somewhere to the northwest of Chicago (can't remember his exact statement) and Amato and Potenza - two guys who operated out of that area for the Outfit - are apparently present. Maybe some of the guys are operatives out of that area who don't have existing photos.

"As I said, I am not sure of the location. However, based on input by a living relative of one of the people in the photo, it is likely that the get together took place at Holiday Park (which was/is a beach), near Wauconda, Illinois."

If this was in Lake County than it's possible that Les Kruse would be one of those there - although nobody here resembles him, IMO.

Butch Blasi is another guy that could be there as he was Accardo's driver for many year although again, none of those photographed resembles him. I guess it's possible he could be the man in the cap but I doubt it.

Does anyone know what Accardo's sons look like?

I originally dismissed him from the group because I figured he was still in the slammer for the Zerk robbery, but he could have been out in '57.

Perhaps the light weight and goofy look were due to jailhouse pallor.

JJB I was under the impression Mario DeStefano got made into the Outfit because he was more stable, unlike Sam who they'd never give a button to.
Don't quote me on this, but I think Tony Spilotro and Mario DeStefano were in on Sam's murder, with Tony acting as the triggerman and Mario setting up the hit on his own brother. Sometime after the hit on Sam, I think Mario got his button.

Sam was almost certainly a made guy. It's basically a mob urban myth that he wasn't.

Here's the Tribune article about DeStefano and Accardo sharing money from juice loans. The info came from Crimaldi's book, so you be the judge relative to accurate/credibility.

how can anybody identify every guy in that pic, right here on these posts we have some of the very best experts on the outfit anywhere in the country, right here!

now it bothers me that fosco can't answer these gentlemen that e- mail him. now im wondering about fosco's credibility on a lot of things.

I think this is something we're all taking for granted. Good chance some of these guys simply won't be identifiable because they aren't known or are civilians.

Sam Destefano was, without a doubt, made. Snakes is correct, its an urban legend that he was not. I think there's a very good chance that sunglasses is Mario.

I didn't think of Centracchio either until I saw some old photos of him and the face and hair match. Also, in the picnics Accardo and Cerone held, everybody was invited, not just top level guys.

I think there were probably quite a few people on their radar that we still don't know about, so I'm not going to venture to guess when Centracchio was on it. After all, a lot of these guys knew each other from childhood, and in 1959 he was 30 years old, which to me is old enough to have been known. Whatever the case, he does look quite a bit like the young guy in the photo.

That's either Sam or Mario, most likely Mario DeStefano... I'm about 95% sure.

I am pretty sure it is Sam.

Look at the earlobes.
Mario's are free, a dominant trait.

Sams are attached, a recessive trait.

Just seeing this photo for the first time. Not sure if this has been determined here but number 5 is Nicky Palermo and the event is probably the plumber's picnic that he hosted back in those days. I believe one of his daughters married an Accardo. He was also father-in-law to Frankie DeLegge Sr. Palermo ran a burglery crew out of Melrose Park. A very reliable source told me that at one point JB was talked out of whacking Palermo. Don't know what Nicky did to piss Tony off.

Oh yeah? I wanna say that I heard that it was over testifying but I may be confusing that with Michael Volpe who actually was killed for testifying before the same grand jury.

Neither Michael Volpe or his car (Honda) was ever found. According to the article, Palermo went to jail for refusing to testify.

He ended up aggreeing to testify.
He said, Accardo was retired, they were just friends, and they never talked business together.

He claimed to have a bad ticker and the feds were instructed to limit his interrogations to 15 min at a time.

I think they were just fishing with Palermo and decided to move on.

I never could understand why accardo had volpe clipped, unless in was in on the burglary, why else would accardo have him killed.

Because by testifying before the grand jury, and admitting that there was indeed a break-in at Accardo's residence, Volpe effectively provided the government with a motive for why the burglars were offed. Nobody else testified that there was a break-in, not even Accardo's wife. It ended up not mattering in the long run but one can understand why Accardo would have been upset.

I thought the same thing, Binnie. Here's all I've heard: While testifying, Volpe admitted there had been a burglary. In Wayne Johnson's book, there is a brief statement saying the police believed Volpe helped the burglars. I believe the first reason is more plausible. Having worked for Accardo for decades, he surely would have known better than to cooperate with these burglars.

Also, Accardo's wife and daughter both testified they knew nothing about a burglary.

Thanks to PK for the follow-up about Palermo.

then volpe made a serious mistake, surely, accardo told him not to say there was a burglary. there must be more to this about volpe, he just could not be that stupid. could he?

Interesting theory on the background of the picture.

Makes sense. He may have said something unintentionally or was just not in his "right mind." Poor guy........really sad.

think thats the best guess we have so far. Don't think i ever saw a picture of mirro, so no clue. And i think we all agree, 10 is a DeStefano, either Sam or Mario

Looking back through the thread, on page 2 I posted that Antillar had 5 guesses right on the ANP thread. He posited:

Quote:
"Here's my list of names, from left to right:
1. Joe Amato
2. Joe Batters Accardo
3. Queenie Simonelli
4. Joe Gagliano? (smiling man with cap)
5. Rocco Fischetti
6. unknown (younger handsome man smiling)
7. unknown (man with back turned)
8. Nick Palermo
9. James Adduci (with glasses)
10. Jackie Cerone
11. Willie Messino (smiling man with sunglasses and cigar)"

Which leads me now to believe that Fosco was giving him credit for merely getting 5 names correct without regard to order. Four of those 5 he got credit for would have to be: Amato, JB, Cerone, and Palermo.

So who's the fifth? Knowing what we now know (or think we know, lol), it's not Simonelli, Fischetti, or Messino, and Fosco told me that Gags was not in the pic, which means Adduci is indeed probably #8.

Therefore,we're left with:

1. Amato
2. Batters
3. Potenza
4. ??? -- Infelice or Ferriola?
5. Palermo
6. ??? -- Centracchio or Pranno? I'm leaning Pranno.
7. ??? -- Anybody have any decent pics of Cowboy?
8. Adduci
9. Cerone
10. DeStefano

Getting closer...

Nice find. I came across that one ages ago, but couldn't find it again. That pic is from mid to late 60s, eh? The part in the hair is the same, but sure looks like he'd have had to have put on a lot of weight from the ANP photo.

I have come to the conclusion that Fosco is guessing and we can't take any thing he says as gospel.

#3 he says isn't Simonelli, because he wouldn't be with this high level crowd.
He also says it's Pranno.
No who ever saw Pranno would ever confuse him with Potenza or Simonelli. The guy looked like Herman Munster fer cripes sake.

I think he wants this to be a shot of another Apalachin, but I think it might just be a bunch of mobsters drinking beer.

Simonelli would have an excellent reason to be there. He was Joe B's brother in law, his regular job as Martin Accardo's sidekick was on hold while Martin was in prison on a Tax beef, and was possibly already living in Tony's guest house (he was certainly in there by '63).

As for Joey Gags, I had written him off, but in every picture I had seen he looked like such a mope. Then I saw this one of him smiling.

Put a cap on him and make him laugh, and I see #4.

Somewhere out there is a '52 lineup photo of Cowboy Mirro. It was evidence at the McClellan hearings and a copy passed through the hands of Binder and was auctioned off in '06.

I'll keep looking.

I can see Gags at #4 based on that pic.

I agree with you on Queenie...my ass he wouldn't have been high level enough to be with these guys.

Was watching a documentary on Sam DeStefano this morning when a very familiar face popped up:

I now believe that Crimaldi is #6. If Sam was present, it sure makes sense. FWIW, Crimaldi later flipped on Sam.

No way #4 is Infelice or Ferriola. In thouse days Infelice looked like Al Capone and Ferriola was a whole different face.I also vote that #4 is Joe Gags.

Joseph Ferriola

Rocco Infelice

First i stated that Pranno is not in the picture but do you guys think #6 might be this guy? Look at the earlobe, nose and hair style

Rocco Pranno

Pranno would've been about 40 at the time of Fosco's pic. That pic of Crimaldi was from the 60s, so I think Crimaldi's probably the better bet.

#6 is definitly not Pranno He had the build and the hair, but not the nose or chin, and frankly, he was kind of scary looking.

I figure Fosco's photo is between 56 (56 Belair) and 59 (there is a lot of Foxhead beer on the table. Foxhead reorganized in '58 and early in '59 effectively fired J.B and Cerone as bogus salesman.)

I figure #6 is thirty something to maybe a well preserved fortyish.

#6's most notable feature is that he is handsome. He looks like the illegitimate love child of Paul Newman and Robert Goulet.

This is pretty rare in the outfit.
I have been looking at any mobsters from the era that could fit the bill.

Caifano was a pipsqueek.
Joe Siciliano was in jail
Pretty boy Lombardi, Crimaldi, and Franky Schweihs (believe it or not, he looked like John Garfield when he was young) were all in their early 20's.

The only other guy I have been able to find that looks right, is a crooked personal injury lawyer named Fred Ackerman.

He would be disbarred and go on to turn states evidence against Mirro, Rocky Infelice, Americo DePieto, and Frank Santucci in one case and Destefano in another.

But the best I can tell, his involvement with the mob started with a juice loan in '58 and everything else was him trying to work it off.
I can't imagine he was connected enough with these guys to drink their beer in the time frame of the photo

Really? As soon as his pic splashed on the documentary, I did a double-take.

Take a closer look and compare: the cleft chin, the nose, the small mouth, and the little widow's peak. The Crimaldi pic used for comparison is from the 60s, probably 5-8 years after the ANP photo.

Anybody know how tall Ricca was? Fosco mentioned to me that Mad Sam being in the pic would only make sense if he was there (meaning Cerone would actually be Ricca).

Scroll down here for the mugshot of Centracchio, taken around 1964. This was about 5 years after the group photo. He has the same head shape, hair, and facial features as the young guy. Not as tanned, but tans come and go, plus police station lights are usually brighter than sunlight in a forest.

Agreed that #6 could be Centracchio.

In other news, it's (FINALLY) last call for identifying everybody in this pic. Fosco has stated that he'll reveal sometime this month (but don't hold your breath).

I'm interested to see just how close we came to getting it right...

I will also ban myself from the board if that is Centracchio.

You need to consider each guy's stature at that time (1950s). Guys like Crimaldi and Centracchio likely never met Accardo, let alone were invited to hang with him at the height of his power. Centracchio was likely still a low-level hood in the 1950s.

Hands down the best thread on gangsterbb 👍 Love these Outfit threads.

No way Crimaldi would have a beer with JB and his inner circle in the mid 50s (or ever). The guy was an associate of Mad Sam who in turn only was tolerated because of his qualities as an earner and protegé of Paul Ricca.

I think you cant overlook the possibilty that a few of the guys in the photo were civilians, as somebody mentioned earlier. Civilians or rather unknown associates but with some personal relation to JB or to anyone of the other top outfit guys identified in the photo.

Wouldn't rule out Daddano as being one of them. Buck Clementi, either. They both ran that area along with Amato and Les Kruse, who could be another one in the photo. Nappi may be one as well. When you only have one or two pictures of a guy to off of he may look completely different, especially in a casual setting that differs from that of a typical mugshot or surveillance photo.

Just reviewed this entire thread, and I'm going to base my final guess on something Joe E Brown contributed:

Quote:
Just seeing this photo for the first time. Not sure if this has been determined here but number 5 is Nicky Palermo and the event is probably the plumber's picnic that he hosted back in those days. I believe one of his daughters married an Accardo. He was also father-in-law to Frankie DeLegge Sr. Palermo ran a burglery crew out of Melrose Park. A very reliable source told me that at one point JB was talked out of whacking Palermo. Don't know what Nicky did to piss Tony off.

I think that the context of the photo is very important, and that it's more likely that not that not just high-ranking guys were present. Thus the argument that so-and-so wouldn't dream of being in the presence of so-and-so means a little less to me.

My final guess, dammit:

1. Amato
2. Accardo
3. Potenza
4. Glimco (doubtful, but a recent hunch)
5. Palermo
6. Centracchio
7. Gianola
8. Adduci
9. Ricca (based on something Fosco mentioned to me, and that I believe #10 is...)
10. Mad Sam

Now tear me apart!

Forget about Glimco, Ricca and Gianola....especially Ricca. He was bald on the top yeah, but he had all white hair from the sides since the 1940's so again...forget it. And if Fosco says that Ricca is on there then he's talking nonsense and really doesnt know who are the guys in that picture

No, he didn't exactly say that it wasn't Sam...he said that Sam would only be there if Ricca were, as he was really Ricca's guy (I know he kicked up to Accardo, but I have actually read somewhere that hands were off Sam due to Ricca).

I can't think of who #10 might otherwise be, that's all.

If number 10 isn't Sam than it's definitely not Blasi.

Amato, Accardo, and Nicky Palermo are the only ones that are pretty much confirmed based on what we know these guys looked like. The rest are going to be either (a) guys we have never heard of or (b) guys of which we have no (or limited) existing photographs.

My pick for the younger guy is Nappi. Why not? He was in his late thirties at the time of the photo but was already well-connected. Plus, Fosco said he got the photo from a relative of his. He also slightly resembles the only photo of Nappi that I have ever seen.

don't get your logic. There is quite a resemblance between the photos of blasi in the late 70s and the guy in the picture.
blasi was accardos driver, so it makes perfectly sense.
And romie nappi was the relative fosco was speakin of.

i would add simonelli adduci and cerone to the confirmed list as well.

He already said Simonelli was not in the photo, although he agreed with the resemblance that number four shared with him. I don't see Adduci being one of the guys, either. I like the bald guy to be Cerone but the vibe I got from Fosco was that he wasn't a "definite".

As for Blasi, sorry, I don't share your assessment on his resemblance to number 10. Blasi didn't have that much white in his hair in the fifties, plus the ears are different:

Toodoped may have inadvertently finally provided a plausible name for #10: Roland Libonati.

Here he is with Cigar by Capone:

And again probably after the photo contest pic was taken:
[img:center]http://mediasvc.ancestry.com/image/38397...amp;MaxSide=160[/img]

From Toodoped:
Quote:
In prison, Ricca had the image of a bald old man, who everyone in the prison, including the guards and warden, was afraid of. He was constantly visited by all kinds of people, who usually asked for favours, or showed respect or even handled messages for the old “Don.” When the visitors left, they never turned their backs at the old boss, but instead first they took few steps back before turning and walking away. One of the most notable visitors was Democratic State Senator from the West Side and long time mob associate, Roland Libonati. This guy used to take pictures with the late Al Capone during baseball matches and labelled people such as Ricca, “charitable” and “patriotic” fellows. When Libonati visited Ricca in his prison cell on August 24, 1960, the scene was like taken out of the Godfather movie. According to a federal informant, there was a display of affection with hugging and kissing, like two “made guys” should salute each other. I’m not saying that Libonati was a member of the mob but he surely knew how to act like one.

I see a cleft chin and hair that is very similar. Thoughts? Not that Fosco's ever going to tell us...

I'm pretty sure that's him, and again I'm left wondering: is #9 Ricca, Cerone, or otherwise? Pic was probably from '56-58 or '59, so Ricca would've been available for such a gathering. I'm not sure he would have attended, though. Also,...

I see more brown with grey in the little hair that #9 has, which leads me to guess Cerone. But I have no idea, and can only surmise.

I submitted to Fosco last night:

1. Amato
2. Accardo
3. Pranno
4. ???
5. Palermo
6. Crimaldi
7. Gianola
8. Adduci
9. Cerone
10. Libonati

I think that's gotta be 6 of them, and MAYBE 7. Still totally unsure about all but 1-3, 5, 8, and 10. I really hope Fosco puts us out of our misery some day and announces the names, because I don't know if I can take much more of trying to figure it out (and I can't stop myself from trying).

I don't think that Adduci is in it, but I agree with the rest. Pranno is actually Potenza. Or have I gotten that backwards again? Lol

Sorry for the tardy response. I do believe that's actually Pranno, as if I remember correctly it was established that some publications had inadvertently used pictures of Potenza as Pranno. Also, Fosco asserted as much. I doubt his sources are mistaken.

I had to step away from this whole mess of a mystery for a while, and just took a peak at the last page again tonight. It occurs to me now that if Libonati is #10, then that's probably Ricca and not Cerone. How that didn't occur to me before is yet another mystery.

Moreover, I'm now pretty well convinced that #10 is Libonati.

The worst part is knowing that you'll never know if you actually knew what you thought you knew...

EDIT: Per Potenza/Pranno, maybe it was the other way around, lol; I just took a look around, and it appears that it was.

1. Amato
2. Accardo
3. Pranno
4. ??? (not Gags)
5. Palermo
6. Guy Cervone (Toodoped's new West Side chart has a pic; really looks like him)
7. ??? (Nuccio?)
8. ??? (think this may actually be Nuccio)
9. Cerone (Fosco implied it wasn't Ricca)
10. Di Varco!!!!***

***Came across a contemporary pic of Di Varco a while back, and instantly noticed the resemblance. Ear lobes and chin are spot on, and it makes sense, as I can recall Fosco asking someone on ANP which guy they thought was Di Varco. I believe the guess was #7.

Here's Di Varco at what looks like a country club:
