Mobster tries, fails ‘pathetic’ $164 Home Depot heist: Law enforcement source
Angelo ‘Little Angelo’ Spata, son-in-law of Colombo crime boss Carmine ‘The Snake’ Persico, was busted for shoplifting lighting equipment valued at $164 from a Home Depot, the News has learned. Spata is free on $1 million bail in a federal racketeering case, and prosecutors are expected to seek revocation of bail because of the shoplifting arrest.

BY JOHN MARZULLI / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2013, 2:31 AM

Angelo Spata, associate and son-in-law of jailed Colombo boss Carmine Persico, has been arrested while out of jail on bail for alegedly trying to steal $164 worth of Home Depot merchandise.

The mob’s Thanksgiving turkey award goes to Angelo “Little Angelo” Spata of the Colombo crime family.

Spata, the son-in-law of Colombo crime boss Carmine “The Snake” Persico, was busted this month for shoplifting lighting equipment valued at $164 from a Home Depot in Brooklyn, the Daily News has learned.

The reputed mob associate was caught Nov. 8 making off with a dimmer switch and LED recessed lights from the Coney Island store without paying, according to a court complaint.

“How pathetic,” said a law enforcement source.

Not so bright idea: Mobster Angelo 'Little Angelo' Spata allegedly tried to steal $164 in lighting equipment from this Home Depot in Coney Island.

Spata was charged with petty larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, according to a spokesman for Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes. Both charges are misdemeanors that carry a maximum jail sentence of one year.

The arrest couldn’t come at a worse time for Spata, who married into mob royalty.

Spata is free on $1 million bail in a separate federal racketeering case and is scheduled to be sentenced next month. Federal prosecutors are expected to seek revocation of his bail because of the shoplifting arrest, sources said.

Defense lawyer Sarita Kedia did not respond to emails and calls seeking comment.

Lol I am telling you Persico and anyone related to him through bllod or marriage are all a bunch of tools.

This guy has ruined that family beyond belief.

This guy is a real winner can't even afford a $142 tab at the home depot.

If some mobsters are making so little that they can't even afford to buy lights then heel we are better off working our regular jobs.

What a joke.

First he fucks all the other Colombo defendants by messing up the universal plea deal by refusing to accept a plea along with the others...then this! Uhh, how much does Carmine really like this kid?! Or his brother-in-law Little Allie Boy?! What a dumbass.

What an imbecile. But there are morons like this in all walks of life (think Hollywood millionaire Winona Ryder getting caught shoplifting ten years ago, or the Lohan twat more recently).

And this isn't even unprecedented among wiseguys. When Joey Massino was lamming it in Pennsylvania he was caught stealing a bottle of aspirin from a drug store. A three dollar bottle of fucking aspirin! He gave his usual alias (Joe Russo) to the cops and they never put two and two together.

And for the hundredth time: These guys are not, for the most part, rocket scientists. Stealing is in their DNA. They get off on it. Whether it's three dollars or three hundred thousand dollars, a lot of them really can't help themselves.

Maybe he wanted to get caught? Get his bail revoked. Sounds like a stretch but if I was the persicos I'd want this guy dead for ruining the chance at a global plea deal.

Of course I doubt it, I think he's just a fucking moron

"Not so bright idea"

I'm glad he finally came out with this. I thought he was going to miss this awesome pun altogether.

$164???

Maybe he should be shopping at Homeless Depot.

In the book Donnie Brasco,Pistone tells the story of a Mob guy who was selling slugs that could be used in place of quarters. Guys were buying them in bulk. These guys just love to get away with not spending more than they have to. I agree that it seems to be hard wired into their DNA.

fully agree with PB. It's their attitude: they are entitled to everything they please.
this + he's a colombo. remember that.

he should be grateful that he's not with the genoveses. he'd be a dead man walking.

also, didn't the feds allow him to travel to europe for a second honeymoon with his wife?

You're saying that there was a universal plea deal that allowed everyone to get a reduced sentence....but this guy refused. Since it was an all or nobody type of deal, they're all going to court? Any more details available?

It's surprising that the other mobsters allowed one guy to go that route, without retribution.

That's exactly it. Henry Hill used to say that Paul Vario would skip out on bills and steal things just because he loved getting over on people. It's not about the score, it's not about the money, it's about getting over on somebody

I knew a mob lawyer who drove around in a Rolls Royce but illegally tapped into a fire hydrant to fill his pool at night.
He was later disbarred for more serious allegations.
As some have said, it's just in their DNA- trying to get awa with something

Mike Mags should give this guy a call, maybe they can get a crew of easily-caught shoplifters going.

Colombo mobster ordered to stay home after shoplifting from Home Depot
The son-in-law of Colombo crime boss Carmine Persico endured more humiliation Monday as a federal judge ordered the mini mobster confined to his home for getting rearrested on shoplifting charges at a Home Depot in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Federal prosecutors went to the store's surveillance videotape to prove that Angelo “Little Angelo” Spata had taken a five-finger discount on $164 worth of lighting equipment Nov. 8. The video clearly showed Spata scanning some LED light bulbs and not others at the self-checkout counter.

U.S. District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto also blasted Spata and his defense lawyer Sarita Kedia for waiting 10 days to notify the government that he had been busted.

Spata, 39, will be sentenced Dec. 18 on the federal money laundering and gambling charges to which he pleaded guilty earlier this year.

Home Depot store detective Johnson Amadi said he had followed Spata from the lighting department to the checkout because his shopping cart was full of expensive items.

When the mob associate was confronted outside the Cropsey Ave. store, at least he didn't act like a wiseguy.

"He said, 'Oh the machine was not working,'" recalled Amadi, who was a lawyer in Nigeria. "I told him to come back to the office to talk about it.

"He said, 'I want to pay for them, it's just a mistake,' and he apologized," Amadi said. "He was a gentleman. If it was in my powers I'd let him go but it's the store policy [to call the NYPD]."

Spata had paid in cash for 18 items costing $312 and allegedly stole five packages of light bulbs and a dimmer switch.

He should rat on the family to get off from the 164 dollar shoplifting fine.

Should probably ask Mr. Kierney. I guess if you're Italian, you should be in prison.
I've read the RICO Act, and I can tell you it's more appropriate...

When I first heard Little Angelo stole from home depot i just figured he was a herion addict with no other way to make money to afford his habit at this point. wouldnt surprise me if he was doing some kind of drugs. He was probably gonna steal the ones he needed and return the ones hes paid for later. if he didnt get caught.

Mob guy gets prison for racketeering, gambling raps

Angelo Spata leaves court after being handed a 15-month prison sentence Tuesday for racketeering and gambling.

The bumbling son-in-law of jailed Colombo crime family boss Carmine Persico was slapped with a 15-month prison term for racketeering and gambling raps despite his pleas for probation Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court.
Mob associate Angelo Spata, 39, faced up to 31-months behind bars after pleading guilty to extorting vendors at the Santa Rosalia festival in Brooklyn and taking part in illegal gambling.
The miniature mafioso — who used his potent family connections to ascend the Colombo ranks — lobbied Judge Kiyo Matsumoto for a no-jail deal and pointed to his charitable works and family responsibilities as grounds for leniency.
“Hopefully your honor will give me the opportunity to take care of my three young children,” Spata told the court as his tearful brood looked on nervously from the gallery.
Spata brainlessly aggravated prosecutors while out on bail when he allegedly lifted $164 in lighting accessories from a Brooklyn Home Depot. That case is still pending in Brooklyn supreme court.
Federal prosecutor Gina Parlovecchio pushed for incarceration Tuesday and argued that Spata had more juice in the crime crew than he was letting on.
“He is a more powerful member fo the Colombo crime family than he has sought to portray in these proceedings,” she said. “These are serious crimes that warrant serious punishment.”
Matsumoto opted for the lower end of federal sentencing guidelines but made sure Spata tasted prison in handing down the 15-month sentence as well as a $7,500 fine.
