George Hogan believed to be the leader of the Winter Hill Gang. Is George Hogan the leader of the Winter Hill gang (Bulger's old gang) or is it his own gang better yet the Hogan gang. What things is Hogan in to?

i think the winter hill gang for all intent and purposes even if it has a small thing going on here and there is largely defunt...

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

Hogan is the leader of the Winter Hill Gang, he took over after Kevin Weeks, but like what Dapper said, not very many members. They have no more than around 15-20 dudes.

I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that all the remnants of the WHG do these days is sell Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycontin, and other such pills.

Here is a 2008 FoxNews story on Carmen DiNunzio running the Italian mob at the time and George Hogan running the South Boston mob, with a brief comment from Hogan himself. I assume that Ivan is correct regarding him being small beans compared to the past.

south boston is still full of criminal activity, i dont think anyone can dispute that. is is what it once was? no, but where in america is that the case? bulgers working relationship with the fbi was the main reason the winter hill gang was able to become so prominent, and once that was broken up the organization lost alot of clout. it seems like irish oc in south boston will be around for the forseable future, just in a diminished capacity. it seems to be one of the last holdouts left in north america, what else is there? the mythical k and a gang of philly that nobody seems to know anything about, or the remnents of the west eng gang up in montreal. anybody from southie please feel free to share opinions. in south boston the fbi stands for "forever bothering irish" smile

How much of that criminal activity is organized criminal activity?

I don't know about that. Maybe the Irish criminals they bother, but they were also bothering DiNunzio, too.

Probably very little or none.

I think the whole "Irish Mafia" thing is pretty much played out, at least in the USA. Irish Americans are too assimilated for that. Whitey was probably the last "real" one to go down, and he was what 85 or so?

There will of course always be criminals of Irish extraction in the USA, but we'll never see an O'Banion again.

Best part for me was when Hogan's one word reply to the reporters question as to whether he was in charge of OC in Southie: 'Disorganized', too funny.

And his excuse for slasing the tire, he thought they were Feds, so that would make such a maneuver more reasonable? Oy vey.

I thought it was hilarious too, though I'm not sure why. The reporter guy seemed pleased with it - "hey! they acknowledged us! See? we really are hard-hitting journalists investigating dangerous gangsters!"

probably not much, but that depends on your definition of oc. with only about 40,000 people living in southie id say per capita they still have more than thier fair share.

Sometimes you guys no nothing about what you are commenting on.

Even today Southie has large public housing projects where 90% of the people are on SS or disability, they drink and do drugs all day. While using their food stamp card for booze and drugs. The old people sell what ever prescriptions they can get to the likes of the WHG/Hogan Crew for redistribution.

Plus, everyone is looking to place a bet, borrow $100 until the 1st of the month or score a little rock etc. The WHG still to this day shakes down any one of the hundred of weed, coke, meth and H dealers roaming the streets in Southie. Dealers look at it as rent and keep their mouth shut.

Does the WHG actively whack people like Bulger and Flemmi did, no, that's bad for business. But Southie is still a place beatings are administered and people keep there mouth shut, it has been somewhat taken over by yuppies and modern neighborhoods but many parts are like they were 25 years ago.

How many areas do you know where you go out in the winter and shovel out your street parking place and when you leave for work you put a trash can r something there to hold it until you get home 8 hrs later...? heck, there's been shootings and beatings over a taken spot during the winter.

Now, I'm not saying the WHG or whatever they call themselves is 100 guys, but with a couple dozen guys locking down an area they can live a pretty good life and off the radar too.

Internet charts aside, I see little evidence that shows there's much of an organization that would could still call the Winter Hill Gang today.

I admire your knowledge and posts on a variety of topics, but how can you educationally make that claim. What's an organization to you..?

In other words, is there any hierarchical structure left for a guy like Hogan to oversee? Outside of hearsay and charts on these forums, I've seen no evidence of any. There may still be individual crooks but it seems the Winter Hill Gang is no more. The I-Team in Boston did a news story on Hogan a few years back and there wasn't much to say.

Well if the Winter Hill gang was no more somebody shouda told Howie cos he was still under the impression he was runnin the show.

I'm sure that whatever happens in this case they'll sure be depicting Howie Winter as 'organized crime'.

As for Hogan this thing as boss of Southie. I aint too sure. Theres lots of ol fucks still around making scores and lots of young guns out to prove themselves.

But lets face it Boston in recent history (yet to be concluded in courtroom) has been the focus of one of the biggest scandals to rock America.

No-one's gonna be looking to put a big target on their heads as Whitey the second anytime soon.
