My daughters and I are so mad that hunky Mike Delfino (the real man IMHO) lol is gone. frown

I saw previews of the CGB and it does NOT appeal to me at all. I could not see any resemblance. I'll take Wisteria Lane any day. smile

Btw, I read somewhere that the narrator of DH (Mary Ellen?) may appear (likely in flashbacks) in the later or last episode.

Lol! I think the funniest thing it does in our house is make us look at each other and say; "I would never do that to you!" Like how Lynette found out about Tom's GF moving in. smile

Yea, I don't see what Tom sees in his GF. When she started choking, Lynette almost let her. lol I totally understand her sentiment. Ha ha My daughter is so bummed because she wants them to stay together.

What about the Old lady laying in the driveway so Bree would run over her. Ha ha ha

Remember when I announced the upcoming Pee Wee Herman porn "parody"? Did you know they did the same already with FAMILY GUY?

To be fair, one joke does sound like something Seth McFarlane's staffs would've come up with for one of their shows: "Lindsey Lohan used to be so attractive, now she looks like Morrissey with tits." lol

Great film. I remember renting that video and bringing home pizza on a Friday night. My wife and son loved it! Especially my son - he was 7 at the time and still loves it. Wow, ronnie - 20 years.

I saw that on opening weekend, slightly older than your boy (only by a few summers), and the only thing I really remember about that experience was that scene when the dinosaurs on the island are unveiled and you could hear a loud audible gasp from the screening crowd.

Kids now see it and probably accept it as dated CGI (if outstanding for it's time), much like how we only see a hairy puppet in KING KONG, which once upon a time truely terried people.

But that moment, back in 1993, people didn't think they were seeing state of the art CGI or animatronic puppet effects. They thought they were really looking at dinosaurs. Pure movie magic. I really thought that was a T-Rex trying to eat Jeff Goldlbum.

EDIT - I forgot, this will be the 30th anniversary of the legendary summer of 1982. Consider the movies that came out that summer:

E.T.
Conan the Barbarian
Poltergeist
Blade Runner
Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn
Tron
Rocky III
Class of 1984
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
The Thing
Friday the 13th Part III
Firefox
An Officer & a Gentleman
Nightshift
Pink Floyd The Wall
Visiting Hours

Rosie's show on Oprah's network was canceled.

Does anyone watch Oprah's network?

I do get OWN channel but I never watched her show and am not certain what time it is even on. I always liked Oprah. I know she had (maybe it already aired) Whitney Houston's daughter on very recently.

As far as Rosie, that was quick. lol I just heard she was gonna have a show. LOL I actually liked her other show way back but I just don't care for her any more. She seems so bitchy that it seems her sweetsy persona was just a mask. I don't know. I just am not even tempted to watch any show she's in. confused

She bought a famous house in nearby Nyack (it was owned by Helen Hayes) and she agreed to come to a benefit for a local hospital. She showed up late, was dressed for a black tie event in a sloppy t-shirt and black pants, stayed for a brief time, was basically unpleasant and left early.

Contrast that with Christopher Reeve the following year, who arrived at the beginning of the event dressed in a tuxedo, and despite his considerable disabilities, stayed the entire night, was extremely pleasant and spent time with all of the guests.

Good List mustachepete. I wouldn't have thought of them. I DO remember seeing Disney's "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" when I was a kid though. I forgot all about that one. smile I looked it up and notice that Sean Connery was in it. Wow, who knew?

The day after she sold her Lakeview home in Chicago for 2.5 million, they announced the cancellation. You could tell her heart was just not into the Windy City. Lots of restaurant & bar people would talk about how she just always looked unhappy and home sick while she was here. It was starting to be obvious in her show as well. I can't blame her totally - we are all a product of where we were born & raised and where we call home.

Yesterday, TCM showed Clash of the Titans with Harry Hamlin from 1981. My wife and I walked out on that movie, the only time we've ever donethat. So, what makes that movie a classic?

The fact that you walked out on it. lol

I had seen that on video shortly after the movie's theatrical run and I was highly impressed by it.

To each, his own, I guess.

Talk about taste, and I know most will disagree with me. When 2001: A Space Odyssey was released I was in business school which was in the downtown area with lots of shops movie theaters. A friend and I decided to ditch class and go to see a movie. 2001: A Space Odyssey was all the buzz that year so we decided to see that. We got so bored we left maybe 45 minutes to an hour into the movie. After we both shook our heads wondering what was so great about it. Don't know now if after all these years opinion may have changed but I don't really care to see it. ohwell

Go ahead, let me have it. lol Be gentle tho. LOL

TIS, I was never a big fan of that movie, either. Dunno why but I could never get into it.

I walked out of a few movies because they were so bad, but I walked out of a movie once because it was so GOOD. Lemme explain ~ I went to see double feature (do they even have those anymore?) and the first one was "Save the Tiger" (with Jack Lemmon). I can't remember the name of the second movie, but the second one was the reason for me going. Anyway, I was so blown away by Lemmon's performance that I became extremely depressed and HAD TO leave.

SC,

I have to confess I never saw "Save The Tiger". I do know most people said it was really good. smile

I do remember double features too. I local theater who never showed first runs but usually older movies (a couple years old) was only 25 cents for kids and 50cents for adults. LOL I also remember short subjects do you? And, there was always a cartoon or two before the flick. Donald, or Daffy or Elmer Fudd. LOL

One of the cable channels is showing the old tv show "Quantum Leap." Anyone remember it? This time he goes back in time and finds out he's Marylin Monroe's chauffeur. LOL I did enjoy that show back in the 90s.

I probably would never have seen "Save the Tiger" if it wasn't for the double feature which attracted me.

More rarely, I'd see a few "sneak previews". I remember going to see Steve Martin's takeoff of Humphrey Bogart's movies, "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" (a pretty funny flick). OK, I laughed through the movie and was about to leave when it ended. My ex said she wanted to stay to see the sneak preview so we did and were totally blown away by it. Its name? "E.T."

As of the last week or so, because of so many reruns I find myself watching a little of the old Alfred Hithcock series. I enjoy the stores and also I see some famous stars in their youth. smile

The original CLASH OF THE TITANS was made in the veign of those 50s/60s cheesy sword 'n' sandal fantasy adventure movies with Harryhausen stop-motion FX, except released decades later in the era of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and was dismissed as stale dated popcorn.

Personally I thought it was OK if not really memorable, but it was definately no JASON & THE ARGONAUTS, which I retain a strong child-like fondness for.

Let me put my Capo hat on.

There is a halfway point in relationship between a movie and it's audience that both sides have to be willing to reach. And in that relationship, people conciously or not project themselves onto the canvas that is the movie.

TIS, you're not "wrong." Personally I love 2001, and I admire the shit out of it. But movies aren't a science where by rules you like "this" and hate "that." The movies that became classics or turkeys come about from more or less popular consensus. I was moved by the movie's visual storytelling and it's secular-flavored religious thematic narrative. I'm surprised whenever people dismiss it as cold, whene I actually consider it a quite emotional movie, if not told by the traditional filmatic standards. Not to mention as a thriller, I'm highly hooked and involved with the conflict over HAL. (It's not boring! :p)

Or take a movie we both liked: SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Box-office bomb, a handful of Oscar nominations but zero wins (the director was snubbed), and TV rights sold to Ted Turner for dirt cheap because who wanted to play on television a prison drama?

Yet people discovered it and fell in love with it. But why? From my end, I was highly engaged by the journey a victim goes through against society, against his environment, against himself and the adaptations and trials he must take. And I was moved by his bromance relationship with Bruce Wayne's gadget man, who himself undertakes his own dramatic transformation. Also there is a delicious joy when the hero does get his revenge against his jailers and the system. One of the few movies that absolutely deserves it's unashamed happy ending.

Or even another American classic more beloved in retrospect than when it came out: CASABLANCA. It was a topical melodrama produced during wartime. So why do people still love it? Probably because the Nazis are perfect movie villains, of which you can project any tolerated totaltarian savagery at any time in history after that war concluded. (After WW2, people didn't see Nazis as much as the Soviets or Chinese or South Africans or Iraqis or whoever. Who knows, they might even see Iranians now in those parts.)

Not to mention we absolutely relate to Bogart's character. When evil things are committed in our civilized world, freely exposed and everybody is a witness. Yet nothing happens, we easily take refuge in Bogart's earned cynicism and seeing the world as a game. Add to that the broad unfairness of life, as what happened with him in Paris.

Yet like SHAWSHANK, there is an optimistic ending which argues that shit is not that hopeless, that even the most cynical son of a bitch can leave his shell and stick his neck for something noble. Hell even Claude Rains, the corrupt and despicale (if entertaining) Vichy French Nazi stooge makes a faceturn at the end for the right thing. (And surprisingly doesn't come off as contrived. That's good filmmaking.)

I really liked that show. Bakula and Stockwell had great chemistry.

However, I sorta hated those celebrity episodes. The whole premise is the protagonist shifting through time and space, rewriting history with a good ending for the little people. But when it came to famous people, well time can't be altered, all that sci-fi convention nonsense.

Monroe still dies of an overdose (or murdered, whatever) but she got to do THE MISFITS. (Whoopee.) JFK still gets his head blown off, but Jackie survives. Elvis still eats and drugs himself to death.

For a fictional program, why not do the same with history?

Other than that qualm, LEAP was terrific.

RR,

I don't even remember the Shawshank Redemption being in the theater. LOL I'd see it on the tv guide list and would wonder, "what the hell is a Shawshank?" I finally saw the movie and loved it.

Everyone has their own taste and that's what makes movies/reviews interesting. You see it from other peoples' perspective. Just because this is a "random" thread I'll give a little insight on my taste.

I've ALWAYS tended to lean toward drama, action type movies. Seldom will I go to see a comedy at a theater. Not that I don't like any comedies but they are not my favorite. Yet, for whatever reason a comedy will come along that cracks me up (even if nobody else enjoys it). Years ago, I rented "Young Frankenstein". I am not a Mel Brooks fan necessarily, but I loved that movie. More recently, HBO was running "The Hangover" (first one). I laughed thru the entire movie and called my girls and told them to rent it. Oh, and I love the Marx Brothers and all their so corny humor but never cared for The Three Stooges. confused

With Space Odyssey it's weird because I love some SciFi like The X-Files, Twilight Zone, ET. Never got into Star Wars or Star Trek though. Go figure!! confused

Another thing, I am not a a big western fan (tho my family & I always watched Gunsmoke, Bonanza). During the same era of Space Odyssey, I went to see a different type movie they called "spaghetti western" called "Hang 'em High" (Sergio Leonie I believe). Not being a western fan, I never saw "Fistful Of Dollars" or "Few Dollars More" until AFTER Hang em High. Then of course Eastwood went on to Dirty Harry and became the #1 Box Office draw in the early 70s.

I actually don't mind the "celebrity episodes" on Quantum Leap BUT I definitely hear what you're saying. You just know they can't change things. Still fun to watch. smile

Being a King fan, I was dying to see "Shawshank" when it came out, but my husband didn't want to go see a prison/rape film. One of the guys he worked with saw it and loved it so much that he told my husband that if he went and still didn't like it, he would reimburse him for his ticket. To this day, it remains one of my husband's favorite films.

I think the title put a lot of people off at the time. One interesting point, it's almost impossible to see deleted scenes from that film. The director won't release them because he feels that if they were any good to begin with, he would have left them in.

There's one scene from the book that was originally in the film and deleted.

When they find the hole in Andy's wall, they send down the guard to see where it goes. He discovers the sewer pipe and starts to yell, "Oh, shit! It's shit!" and gets sick. Morgan Freeman's character starts laughing so hard that it absolutely infuriates the warden.
