The BBC DOCTOR WHO Christmas special was terrific. A sexy new helper for the Doctor and an attack of killer snowmen led by the tremendously sinister Richard E Grant. Brilliant stuff!!

No periods? Yup definately a guy. Or maybe it's not the right time of the month for you?

I enjoyed TED. Not overwhelmingly, then again I'm not really a big Seth McFarlane/FAMILY GUY/spin-off fan. If anything, TED is pretty much the FAMILY GUY movie for good and ill. I'll admit I was also amused by the FLASH GORDON references.

Never saw THE BIRDCAGE. I'm surprised in your lame attempt at calling me gay, you didn't use BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN instead. Or WILL & GRACE. Or PASSION OF THE CHRIST.

I thought it odd the Great Intelligence/Snowmen sounded like Ian McKellen. Turns out he did voice it after all. Hell of a cameo.

I loved that one line.

DicknoseM.

I don't know if you and RR are joking around or not, confused but I think both Capo & RR do good job at reviewing movies. Both are honest & thorough in their reviews.

Just viewed a trailer for a Brad Pitt movie. It looks like one of the Armegeddon genre. It's due out this summer, but the trailer was quite long. I guess they're still doing post-production and reshoots.

Netflixed Clint Eastwood's latest movie TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE. I liked it. I'm reminded of JACK REACHER actually in that both you sorta knew/guessed what to expect, and you more or less get what you expect. A picture you walk, don't run, to go see.

Which isn't a put down at all, CURVE is also a good execution of a crowd-pleasing formula picture. Clint is vintage Clint with cranky old white guy not able to handle reality (and bullshit) very well. He's in his 80s, and still able to dish out solid entertainments (and sometimes much more), I admire him as a star/producer. Amy Adams as the daughter with daddy issues is great, and Justin Timberlake actually gels well with both as a former pitcher/talent scout.

Interestingly this is a nice reaction/contrast to MONEYBALL where stat nerds dominate the baseball game over the experienced baseball scouts and "traditional wisdom." In CURVE, its reverse with nearly-blind scout Eastwood and his wisdom having to deal with clueless statistician Matthew Lillard who is divorced from reality outside of his computer.

Anyway I talked to my Mother (who saw this in theatres last year)and she remarked that one reason she usually liked Eastwood's movies was that the "jerks" always get their just desserts one way or another. The movie's plot follows Eastwood scouting (or trying at least) this top baseball prospect in the Appalachias, and he's the biggest dickhead diva.

In Eastwood movies, such people always make Eastwood's day. And I must agree with my Mom there. smile

I give this three and half empty chairs out of 5.

I heard they changed a lot from the book it is based from. If anything though the movie might be good if you haven't read the book.

Worth noting: The recently released musical LES MISERABLES has gotten two versions of the featured song "I Dreamed a Dream" into the Billboard's Top 100.

Anne Hathaway #69
Lea Michele + Idina Menzel #31

Haven't heard the Hathaway version, but I love the Lea/Idina version, from back when Glee was, you know, actually good.

Sort of a bit off topic but I just saw Batman with Anne Hathaway as Catwoman... she was terrific! That was a great movie and she did really well.

She really did do a terrific job with that character. At first, I thought that hathaway might not be a good fit for catwoman. She proved me and probably others wrong.

Well Yogi and Lilo, I saw DJANGO UNCHAINED.

You gotta like a movie where Jamie Foxx in his Prince sunglasses (with the audience behind him) goes Billy Jack/Clint Eastwood on the bad guys, and it's richly deserved and goddamn satisfyingly executed. I was actually surprised they mentioned black slavers, which did happen in the pre-Civil War era.

People whining about its pacing need to stay home and watch TV. (Seriously almost every good big event/blockbuster movie this year, people bitch about being too long.) Movies are not TV, and thank God.

I have a bold prediction. If Leonardo DiCaprio gets an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor, he will win. But I'm not sure he'll actually get in. If he gets in, he will win. He really reminded me of Ralph Fiennes in SCHINDLER'S LIST in that because from the get go he's a slave owner (or Nazi), you know you're not supposed to hate him because of his occupation. But then Leo's character bullies and punishes the audience in show off how evil I can be. He is the slavocracy, unmovable and ridiculously powerful/influential in society, until intervened with violence whether a Spagetti Western-flavored revenge exploitation* movie, or the Civil War.

You know I'm surprised Samuel L. Jackson hasn't gotten more traction for his work here. The first time in dog years that he wasn't merely playing Samuel L. Jackson (with eyepatch or not the only variety) and he's wickedly evil great. You could even argue he's the real villain of the story, and more richly complex.

*=It's truely exploitive in the way it shows off the procedural sadism of slavery, my audience was bothered yet they couldn't look away. I'm sure hands were on front of their faces, eyeballs peeking out between the fingers. I applaud QT for at least not shying away and be squeamish about that shit, but it's exploitive entertainment like any of those "torture porn" horror movies like HOSTEL or whatever.

Haven't seen the movie, but if the guy from Inglourious Basterds won supporting actor then why not DiCaprio?

Glad you saw it. I loved it. Yes, Jackson did good work there, as did DiCaprio. The audience where I was applauded at the end for quite some time, especially at the dressage scene.

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

Because I really liked Stephen King's 11-22-63 book and look forward to the movie. I did a search to see if any cast was named yet. Don't know who comes up with suggestions but here's what I found:

http://www.imdb.com/list/rIxWgjjp1P4/

Joseph Gordon Levitt as Jake (main character)? Maybe, but I pictured an older person.

BUT, Jim Parsons (who I love in Big Bang Theory) as Oswald? uhwhat I can't picture it.

John Goodman, Anthony Hopkins would likely do well in their roles.

Actually, I can see John Hamm in the title role.

Any thoughts?

TIS

Checking further, I see the director opted out of the film. frown Don't know if it'll make it to the screen or not, at this point. Anyone who hears news, please post.

Recently watched a thing we taped from before Christmas, A YOUNG DOCTORS NOTEBOOK. Based in Russia in the early 1900's and starring Harry Potter and Don Draper.....okay Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm. A bit strange, but very funny, worth a watch if you can find it!

I actually remember the Jackson 5 cartoon though I can't say that I watched it much. In the early to mid 70s there were also cartoon versions of the HJarlem Globetrotters and Gilligan's Island where Ginger was a platinum blonde for legal reasons. I also remember a cartoon version of the Three Stooges.

I was surfing the channels and came across a DeNiro movie entitled Flawless from '99. I had never heard of it. I only watched minutes of it. It seems that there are so many movies even by first tier stars that don't attract much attention.

Oli,

I never heard of that DeNiro movie either. I had same experience last night, when one of the cable channels aired a Kim Basinger movie I never heard of titled, "When She Was Out" (2008).

Long story short, she is at a shopping mall Christmas Eve, put a note on the car of someone who parked taking up two spaces. She had to drive a few blocks to find a spot to park. A gang of thugs from that car waited for her to leave and it was a cat & mouse chase into the woods where she ends up more or less pulling a Rambo on them. lol It WAS violent

SPOILER (if you are at all interested in seeing this movie don't read this paragraph)

It ended weird (and kind of funny) when she returned home to her abusive husband who had been yelling/hitting her in the beginning. He started yelling "Where the hell have you been" AND "what did you buy me?" Well, she had had about enough by then right? She takes out a gun points it at him and answers "Nothing!" LOL That's where it ends, without showing IF she actually pulls the trigger. lol

TIS
