Big NEWS. I just dropped Verizon DSL and signed on to Comcast. One incompetent for another with one exception. My download speed just went from 2.4 Mbps to 24 Mbps. I'm flyin' baby.

My brother has Comcast and hates it. Part of his condo complex got FIOS, and then Verizon just stopped installing it.

DSL is so '90s that it's about time. tongue Comcast was fine for a while, but I'm VERY happy with FiOS!

Really? Only a non-parent could ask that question! tongue

The application part is actually easy. It's just basic information: name, address, name of high school, GPA, etc. Then we get into the college essay, which she did in English class, thank God, and all the supporting crap that goes with it.

Plus, since she's applying to art schools, she has to have a portfolio. However, each school has different portfolio requirements. One wants 12-20 pictures, 5 from direct observation. Another wants 20, with a minimum of 7 from direct observation, plus an exterior scene drawn in pencil and two essays. And they all have to be digitized and sent to the school via some app called slideroom.

All for the privilege of paying these clowns anywhere from $40-60K a year! Unless, hopefully (and will accept all prayers, novenas, pilgrimages to Lourdes, etc.) she gets into the state school.

I got your back on this one, Babe... She gets a big Amen on this one! Mrs. Mark has worked wonders doing all that college stuff for our kids. There are sooo many things/programs to take advantage of and it will save a lot of time/money and headaches! Unfortunately, today's kids don't have the patience, time or wherewithall to dot all the i's and cross all the t's. By doing it and understanding it on a parental level makes everyone involved that much better! You go, Babe! That's what moms are for! Good job!

Mark and SB (Geoff you can read this too)

I went through the college-help thing. As a parent, you almost have to do it. The variety and intricacy AND detail that go into these applications are nothing the high school junior/senior has seen. My wife and I did a lot of homework help throughout school and when college came, she was prepared for the classroom - Magna Cum Laude (missed Summa by .05) Villanova. Immediately accepted to Columbia Teachers College for her Masters, got an A- and all A's. Mom and Dad were very proud.

It's not easy, and as a parent we need to walk a fine line between helping and keeping them from being self-sufficient. We did get her portfolio photographed for the most part. God, could someplace just accept her so we can move on???

Good luck to your daughter (and you!), SB, on getting through the application process! As frustrating as it is, it's great you're putting in that kind of effort. I can't imagine having to fulfill all of those art requirements when each one involves different types... I had enough trouble forcing myself to do the essays! lol

For my Christmas Story fans, check this out:

My mom found these boxers at Target, as well as a t-shirt with his same funny face pictured here.. so I now own a Christmas Story wardrobe. A very casual wardrobe, but one I'm quite proud of. grin

How about this? Talk about Mea Culpa!:

VATICAN CITY — An assistant bishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles has resigned because he has a secret family, including two teenage children.

The Vatican said on Wednesday that Pope Benedict had accepted the resignation of Gabino Zavala, an auxiliary bishop of the diocese which has been plagued by sexual scandals

Mark, she's an artist. I thought she would go for Animation, because she does a great deal of digital art, but lately has been sketching with pencils, and decided on Illustration as a major. Considering that she really hasn't had formal training outside high school art classes, I think she's very talented, but I'm her mom, so easy for me to say! lol

I am a grahic artist/cartoonist as well. Babe - she really needs A LOT of training and experience with the Adobe Creative Suite Series 5.5 in Mac OSX. If she doesn't, there really aren't many opportunities she can eventually persue... not trying to be harsh but that is reality. I can give you more details if you wish. I understand & empathize with the whole "artist" thing - believe me. I shot myself in the foot many years ago by not listening to sound/experienced advice. I would hate to see that happen to your daughter! Good luck!

I have to concur with Mark here. When I was working at Polygram Records in the mid '90s I was pretty much a beginner and there were people doing some amazing things in animation, even then. It always intimidated me so I never pursued it -- and I'm kicking myself to this day. I have Photoshop down, and Illustrator and Flash aren't too bad (yet still complex), but mastering them really is very necessary if she plans on having a lucrative career (if that's her goal). Of course, being a starving artist is admirable, and I know she won't starve at your house lol, but I would also encourage her to embrace the technological side of the field. At least she should take some classes in that direction among the others....

Amen, J Geoff. The more applications she can learn, the better off she will be. The big one right now for me is Adobe InDesign. I am much better versed in Illustrator but a full dive into InDesign is what I need. It is the new Quark in print design. Don't get me wrong - it is always great to have natural hand drawing/painting/coloring talent but there just doesn't seem to be much of a demand for it these days. Granted there are hand drawn illustration careers few & far between (children's book illustrator, etc.) but the majority of the time those hand drawn pieces are scanned at a hi resolution and colored/altered in a dozen different apps. Before I was thrown into the digital aspect of art I did a lot of hand drawn cartoons/illustration for customers (silk screeners, printers, etc.) that would tell me to just draw them a "coloring book page"... simple line art with no color, crosshatching or shading. Those drawings were then scanned and worked with digitally. I am now a Prepress Manager at a printing plant and am STILL learning something new in the world of art EVERYDAY. SB - don't underestimate the importance of some basic computer graphic design classes at a local junior college for your daughter. They can be very beneficial for her while she is still testing deeper waters. Even if she gets some time with different apps - Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, she will be better down the road. She is at the age where learning computer apps is like walking and chewing gum to her generation. Again - good luck!

If you wrote that you "studied Italian for 2 semesters" (see sig), then it's no wonder they didn't want you in those two universities tongue

Mark and Geoff, you're absolutely right. She has been working on a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet for about two years, and is proficient in Illustrator, Photoshop CS4 and Paint Tool SAI. The schools we've looked at offer a foundation year of basic art classes, drawing painting and so on. Then, they progress to their specialty after that. The three schools she's most interested in are in NY and offer in-depth technical training, and all have the latest equipment. Because they're in NY, they offer internships at places like Nickolodeon, and how cool is that??

Any and all advice is very welcome!!
