Anyone catch the Mobsters show on the BIO channel the other night featuring the story of Crazy Joe Gallo? It was pretty good. Pretty informative with some really interesting footage from the hearings held by John and Robert Kennedy.
Friday, December 11 10:00pm Mobsters:
The Westies In the 1970's, a group of ruthless Irish punks called the "Westies", managed to terrorize Hell's Kitchen in New York City. They had a penchant for violence and a desire to control the illegal activities on Manhattan's west side. Young Irish thug Jimmy Coonan teamed up with Mickey Featherstone, a Vietnam veteran with a reputation for being a ruthless killer. The "Westies" ruled the streets, protecting their various rackets, including drug dealing and extortion, through extreme violence. They were so powerful they were able to work as contract killers for the Gambino crime family.
Sunday, December 13 5:00pm Mobsters
Mob Ladies Virginia Hill, Arlyne Brickman, and Karen Hill were mob ladies with looks that could kill and the connections to take out anyone in their way. In the 1930s, Virginia used her good looks, sexuality, and quick wits to become close with some of the country's most notorious gangsters. In the 1950's Arlyne worked her way from a mob groupie, to a trusted business partner and proved earner for some of New York's biggest mobsters. And Karen was the wife of "Goodfella" Henry Hill, trusted associate of the Lucchese crime family in the late 60s/early 70s, and later an FBI informant.

Anyone catch the Mobsters show on the BIO channel the other night featuring the story of Crazy Joe Gallo? It was pretty good. I enjoyed it, DC. I enjoy just about everything when it come to the Gallo brothers. They were so media friendly, that 50 years later, the archival footage is still entertaining. He was really of the Anastastia-Gotti mold, wasn't he? Always a smile for the camera and a polite word (while being filmed, anyway) for the reporters covering him.

For anyone not familiar with the photo that SC is talking about, here it is (used as the book cover for 'The Mad Ones'). Look closely at Larry Gallo's neck. For those who may be new to these boards and unfamiliar with the story behind the above picture..... On August 20th 1961, Larry Gallo was invited to meet with members of the Profaci family to supposedly negotiate a deal. That meeting took place at a bar on Utica Ave in Brooklyn called The Sahara Lounge. During that meeting a couple of beat cops happpened to walk into the bar and found Larry Gallo getting himself strangled. A gunfight ensued and one of those cops was shot, but his walking in that bar when he did happened to save Larry Gallo's life. ......Sound familiar GFII fans?

Thursday, December 17 4:00am Mobsters: Nicky Barnes Notorious, heroin kingpin, Leroy "Nicky" Barnes, went from organizing one of the most powerful African-American heroin rings in New York to a government informant. Out of spite, Barnes turned on his fellow associates and destroyed the drug trafficking empire he took so long to build.
Friday, December 18 10:00pm Mobsters: Frank Nitti He came to the US from Italy in 1893, when he was seven years old. The Nitti family settled in Brooklyn, but by 1920, Frank had moved to Chicago. He quickly started fencing stolen jewelry, and eventually joined Al Capone's criminal empire, called the Outfit. Rising quickly in the organization, he displayed a talent for business and enforcement. In 1933, Frank caught his big break when Capone was sent to prison for tax evasion, and Nitti took over a criminal enterprise pulling in tens of millions of dollars a year. Needing to reinvent the Outfit after the end of Prohibition, Nitti turned to the labor unions and specifically Hollywood. But Frank may have aimed too high, as the Feds soon caught on and Nitti and many of his guys were indicted. As the trial approached, other members of the Outfit told Frank to take the rap. Faced with life in prison or perhaps, murder by fellow Outfit members, Frank took matters into his own hands and on March 19, 1943 he shot himself in the head.

Saturday, December 19 4:00am Mobsters: Tony Accardo This mobster rose from a foot soldier in Al Capone's Chicago "Outfit" to eventual boss of the notorious gang. Under Tony Accardo's leadership, off-and-on for nearly fifty years, the "Outfit" prospered through numerous illegal rackets including gambling, prostitution and extortion.
Sunday, December 20 4:00AM Mobsters: The Mob's Greatest Hits This episode explores six of the most notorious mafia killings of all time and the everlasting effects these murders had on organized crime. From the Castellammarese War in the late 1920's to the assassination of the Boss of Bosses, Paul Castellano, in 1985, we'll go deep inside the most infamous mafia power struggles in American history. The program delves into the relationships of greedy, power hungry Mafiosi, exploring their conflicts, and illustrating their bloody resolutions. From Maranzano to Masseria, Dutch Shultz to Bugsy Siegel, the outcome is always the same... murder.
Sunday, December 20 4:00PM Mobsters: Paul Castellano "Big Paul" Castellano served as boss of the Gambino crime family--the largest in New York during the 1970's and 80's. Castellano presented himself as a legitimate businessman and mingled with New York's upper crust, while running a multi-million dollar racketeering operation. From his $3.5 million dollar estate on Staten Island, he oversaw rackets in construction, meat distribution, union infiltration, pornography and more. But many Gambino members believed Castellano got a free ride to the top on the coattails of his predecessor, cousin and brother-in-law, Carlo Gambino. Nepotism and Castellano's reclusive lifestyle split the Gambino family into two factions, which would ultimately led to his undoing.

"Mob Money," Wednesday night-June 23 at 9 PM on CNBCCNBC's "Mob Money" special doesn't always seem to be sure exactly what story it's selling, but it's got enough good stuff to feed our endless fascination with the shadowy underworld of the Mafia. The main focus seems to be the collapse of New Jersey's DeCavalcante family, which had built up a nice, lucrative little business in the shadow of the higherprofile five families of New York. Along the way, "Mob Money" touches on other matters, like the corporate and fiscal evolution of the mob - for instance, how it has branched out from protection rackets and no-show union jobs to more sophisticated schemes like stock manipulation. New Jersey Mob American Greed’s Mob Money reveals the inner workings of the mob through the eyes of New Jersey’s DeCavalcante family. They were once seen as second-class mobsters living in the shadows of the bigger New York City families. But that changed in the late 1990’s when the feds busted all five New York families for racketeering. For the DeCavalcantes, the timing couldn’t have been better. Discover how the family matures, becomes success and eventually bows to its weakness and crumbles to its knees. Organized crime activities bring in a worldwide annual income of between $50 and $90 billion…that’s more money than any major legitimate national industry. From loan-sharking and labor racketeering to illegal gambling and murder for hire to its recent invasion into Wall Street - it’s all part of the life and death business of organized crime. American Greed Special Presentation
"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives." Winter is Coming
Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

If anyone would like this to be continually updated I wouldn't mind doing that. Most of these shows SHOULD already be listed by Geoff on the "Today on TV" list on the left hand side of this page.

What keeps the Mob in the red is corruption, violence and MURDER. In the Mafia, murder isn’t personal. It’s business. "MOB MONEY: MURDERS AND ACQUISITIONS" explores seven different murders and how they helped line mobster pockets. From the 1931 murder of Joe Masseria to the 1985 murder of Paul Castellano, millions of dollars hang in the balance in some of the American Mafia's biggest mob hits. http://www.cnbc.com/id/43653728

That episode is bolshit They have this new show on CNN called American Greed. They did an episode called "Mob Money: Murders & Acquisitions." it was pretty good. I don't know if anybody already mentioned it. It aired already so maybe you can catch it online or a re-run.
Random Poster:"I'm sorry I didn't go to an Ivy-league school like you"
"Ah I actually I didn't. It's a nickname the feds gave the Genovese Family."

This Friday (Jan. 27th), CBCs The Fifth Estate will be about the recent happenings in Montreal. Will be on at 9:00 EST for those with CBC. Here is the description from their website, should be pretty good: The latest chapter in the story of the Canadian mob's bloody turf war. With his father and son Vito Rizzuto built a criminal empire. But then a reign of terror from within decimated Canada's first family of crime. The fifth estate reveals the family ties that connect the hits, the takedowns, and the body in the river that may finally unlock the mystery of who's been killing the Rizzutos.

I'm hoping its not the same one but updated or something like that, but I dont think it will be. Im not able to record and upload it, unfortunately, but hopefully someone else can do it. Im pretty sure that after the episode airs, it will be archived on the CBC website, so you should still be able to watch it, even if you cant download it.

The calabrese one the other night was boring as hell. Just the same stuff rehashed over and over, with a lot of bullsh*t. Its a shame they can't get to Frank Sr. to interview him for a change, it'd be nice to get two sides of the story instead of a couple rats who betrayed their blood. No chance Frank will ever be doing interviews though, hell after turning a priest crooked he's lucky to still get his meals dropped off to him in Springfield lol. Agreed, same exact stuff we already read about, hoping for something new, at least. But, what could I have expected, same thing every time. Also- 'couple rats who betrayed their blood'?? At least they had the courage to fess up...Frank Sr. probably still thinks he did the right thing. (hint: he didn't...he was a psycho murderer scumbag that deserved what he got; I don't care if 90% of his victims were scum, too) Reasonable adults talking about 'snitches' as if they are lowly people still gets me riled...I saw a 50 year old guy the other day with a 'snitches get stitches' t-shirt. I was embarrassed for the both of us. What a great mindset! The folks helping put 'bad guys' to justice are the assholes? wtf is that? Of course some don't care, and want to save their own skin, but the end result is the end result. Ending lives based on a 'beef' is not honorable, so calling someone out on it can never be dishonorable, end of story. Just had to let that out, sorry for the off-topic!

I'm sorry but ratting on your father/brother? Fact of the matter is, Frank Jr was a junkie thief who stole hundreds of thousands from his old man, and was scared of the consequences. It wasn't about "keeping this sick man behind bars" for the good of the community, it was about him being afraid. As for Nick, everyone knew he'd rat once Jr. flipped. I don't know if he had other reasons, and don't care. I'm not justifying Frank Sr's life, or any street guy's for that matter, I'm just saying to take down your ACTUAL family over money is just pathetic. Now Frank Jr is doing all these shows/book tours like he's not afraid and is some big badass. If he was a badass, he would've stood up to his old man, or kept his mouth shut and did his time without hurting his family and others who had nothing to do with him.

I thought I've seen every episode but dont recall ever seing an ep on Joey The Clown Lombardo and cant find it on youtube. Does anyone have a link?? Also, last night they were supposed to show the new Iceman episode but pulled it for some reason. If someone can clear this up for me, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks and have a great weekend!!

Saw the Mad Sam one yesterday, he was really out there! Besides his extreme violence, his antics in court almost seemed to not be an act. They weren't an act. He was legit bat-shit crazy.

GrandAve or Mark..How is that lined up having two baseball teams in your state. I mean here in PA Pittsburgh is a 5 hours drive from Philly. Are they teams spread apart like that? I'm not familiar with Chicago, never have been there, but would like to take a trip up there to check it out. Good question, DNM. For many Chicagoans it is a lot about family legacy and/or which neighborhood you live in or was raised in. Basically, US Cellular Field is on the south side in the Bridgeport neighborhood and Wrigley Field is about 10 miles north in the Lake View/Wrigleyville neighborhood. My parents lived in the Little Italy (University Village) neigborhoods until they moved us out to the south west suburbs. Much of the family landed in Cicero. Personally, I am a Sox fan BUT I do like the Cubs as well as all the other Windy City teams. However, when they play each other - it's as clear as black & white! Go Sox! Same here, my grandpa (ma's side) grew up off Taylor (near west side), moved to Berwyn and then River Grove. My dad's family was from Glencoe, which is north shore of the lake. I grew up in Elmwood Park, but live downtown now. The majority of my family are Cubs fans, regardless of where they're from. Hell, some live in Bridgeport which is where the sox play. I'm not one of those Cubs fans that trashes the sox either. I rooted for them in '05 when they won. Hell it was nice to see the trophy return to Chicago regardless. But I'm telling you, if the Cubbies ever win it, the celebration will probably shut down the whole city for about a month lol.

Only a month, Grand? I look for an entire year! This whole city will go crazy. Even the die hard mega meatball "sout" sider fans would have to tip their hat if the Cubbies win it all. Oh, not to mention that Bam here on the BB will never let me hear the end it! He is a mega meatball northside fan that bleeds Cubbie blue! Grand - not sure if you are old enough to remember Ray Rayner's half Cub & half Sox hat he would wear when giving scores in the morning on WGN! Oh yeah I remember that! I think theres a youtube clip actually

Where did they get story of how DeStephano was skilled from. They it was his own brother and Anthony Spilatro. I assume an informer gave them the info, anyone know who it was ? How does anyone really know those sorts of things ya know... DeStefano was one crazy bastard, I was laughing so hard when they showed the part and said that he was talking to the FBI agent and his "member" was waving back and forth in his face through the opening in the robe "Mad" Sam was wearing, and that he used to make him wait and have his wife serve him coffee that he(DeStefano)urinated in, I was dying... He was one disturbed cat thats for sure..

National Geographic goes 'Inside' New York's 'Five Families' By MICHAEL STARR July 23, 2013If timing is everything, Nat Geo’s new series, “Inside the American Mob,” is a ticking metronome. Over the past month, the death of James Gandolfini, who played North Jersey mobster Tony Soprano in “The Sopranos” — coupled with the ongoing, headline-grabbing trial of Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger — has brewed a perfect storm of interest for Nat Geo’s six-part series (premiering Sunday night). “I think it’s probably both of those things,” says series executive producer Banks Tarver. “People are interested in this world, and even the passing of [Gandolfini] may register in their minds. And the Whitey Bulger trial has certainly taken on a life of its own — and people are talking about it.” Bulger, though, isn’t the focus of “Inside the American Mob,” which documents the criminal history of New York’s infamous “Five Families” (Gambino, Lucchese, Bonanno, Genovese and Colombo), with 1974 as its jumping-off point. “It’s not a deep, long look back at the far past, although we do reference people like Lucky Luciano when introducing the concept of ‘The Commission’ and how it operated in the early ’70s,” Tarver says. “The mid-’70s are often referred to as the ‘Golden Age’ of the American mob, which was extraordinarily successful in making lots of money with little obvious concern about law enforcement getting in its way. “They felt they could do almost anything, and the idea of ‘Omerta’ [a code of honor] and keeping quiet was a very effective tool,” he says. “Law enforcement didn’t know as much [then] about how the mob worked, and with ‘The Godfather’ movies coming out around that time, there was a sense that the mob was untouchable. “I think it was such a big, dramatic story in New York that it made sense to set [the series] there,” he says. It felt like a grand, sweeping narrative, starting with the ‘Golden Age’ to the present — and that saga happens most dramatically in New York. “Each episode tells part of a bigger story. People tend to talk about the ‘Five Families’ like a monolith but, in fact, they’re very different,” Tarver says. “We gave special attention to each ‘family’ and focus on their histories; each of them have moments when they’re more in a ‘command’ role. When one family gets beaten up by law enforcement that, in turn, gives another family the chance to do well — while giving that first family a chance to recover and get stronger. “So you’re able to see the ups and downs of the mob in New York.” Tarver also describes the series as having an “Upstairs, Downstairs”-type feel since both real-life mobsters and the FBI agents who busted them — in addition to informants — share their on-camera recollections. “We found key people to put on camera, focusing on very personal and intimate stories,” he says. “We’re able to tell the Big Picture from key moments . . . where, in each instance, we can step inside the bigger stories and get a very personal point-of-view.” And, Tarver says, “Inside the American Mob” will track organized crime’s ultimate decline. “Law enforcement was more clued-in and did a better job of tackling the mob. They were armed with better technology and laws and there was a willingness on the part of high command to go after the mob in a serious way,” he says. “And the traditions within the mob started to break down over time, including ‘Omerta’ and the idea of not ‘flipping.’” (Think Sammy “The Bull” Gravano ratting on John Gotti.) “People started stepping away from that code — which made it easier for law enforcement to infiltrate and attack the mob." http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/tv/mob_mentality_MRQ6NPY6Caox5BRXvhHHUK

The story of Jimmy Hoffa is a tangled tale with tentacles that stretch from Cuba to Northeastern Pennsylvania, Detroit to Las Vegas. His disappearance is one of the most famous missing-persons cases in history. But new light is shed on the old mystery in an episode of “History Detectives Special Investigations,” “Who Killed Jimmy Hoffa?” scheduled to air at 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 22 on PBS affiliates including WVIA. Hoffa, the former head of the Teamsters union, apparently vanished from the face of the earth on July 30, 1975. No trace of him has ever come to light. The History Detectives’ investigation focuses on who killed Hoffa and why. The who is most likely hit man Frank Sheeran, who did so at the directive of Kingston-based mafia boss Russell Bufalino, according to some experts. But why? Hoffa knew too much. And he was starting to talk about it, the experts say. http://citizensvoice.com/news/history-detectives-who-killed-jimmy-hoffa-1.1718685
