Glad you liked it! I'm due for a second viewing here pretty soon but so many things have been dropping lately between the theaters and streaming, I'm having a hard time keeping up!

Beginning in North Dakota, THE ICE ROAD stars Liam Neeson as Mike, a truck driver who's taking care of his adult-aged, mechanic brother Gurty, who is mentally disabled. In a mine shaft in Winnipeg, there's a methane explosion that traps 26 miners. With 30 hours worth of oxygen left for the miners and having been fired from his previous job (not to mention a sweet payday from the Canadian government upon delivery of emergency supplies he's hauling), Mike and Gurty decide to teamup with Goldenrod (played by Laurence Fishburne) and Tantoo (Amber Midthunder) to make the arduous journey north. The only problem is, in order to reach the miners in time, they need to take their extremely heavy trailers on a shortcut known as the ice road, which during the winter time due to the extreme cold, the lakes freeze and truckers use them as roadways. However, this story takes place during April when the ice is ready to thaw. All I can say is after watching this, Neeson and Fishburne better have gotten paid some serious money for attaching their names to this dumpster fire. The story opens with the miners getting trapped and the audience doesn't have any connection to them. Throw in Mike's at times unpleasant and short tempered attitude with Gurty, Fishburne who's in maybe 20% of the movie, sloppy editing, obvious low budget production quality, and you have a recipe for a terrible film. With movies like this, it's obvious Neeson's losing a step. I only hope he can rebound, and quickly, from the bad taste this will leave in your mouth. 3/10

Just watched it...could not have agreed w/ u more....very cheesy.

FEAR STREET PART III: 1666

The concluding chapter of the FEAR STREET series goes back to where it all started: Shadyside 1666, when the town was first being settled. Kiana Madiera plays the role of Sarah Fier, the witch who haunts her town and attempts to rewrite history and break the witch's curse over Shadyside. All of the characters from the first two films are back playing various roles. For half of the film, it plays as a well done period piece/thriller, before the known events begin to take shape onscreen. For a brief period of time there is the question of who made the deal with Satan and not a bad reveal of said person. The story then switches gears and returns back to 1994 to finish out what was originally started in the first film. Impressive performances by up-and-comers Kiara and co-star/love interest Olivia Scott Welch. Overall, an enjoyable B level series that had a decent marketing push but will probably be soon forgotten. I did enjoy the fact Netflix released each film only a week apart from one another and my final rankings would be 1994, 1666, 1978. 6.5/10

A CLASSIC HORROR STORY

5 strangers ubering together in a van in southern Italy are suddenly stranded in the woods in front of a mysterious house after one of the drivers swerved to avoid an animal in the street, causing their van to crash. Upon entering the house, they learn of an ancient Italian ghost story that appears to have actually come to life. With a title like A CLASSIC HORROR STORY, the viewer is aware this will be a film that will recycle typical horror tropes. And while that is indeed the case, this still manages to make them fresh and modern. Borrowing and/or paying homage to classics as well as more contemporary films within the genre, this is a roller coaster of a ride that wowed me! A story that continued to impress and build upon itself the whole way through and left me wanting more, even with a tight story as any more could have made the film drag or overdrawn. A second viewing is eagerly anticipated sooner rather than later. Do not sleep on this film as this is one of the best Italian horror films to be released in recent memory! 8/10

Signora V. got a press screener copy (a link, actually) of that new documentary about Anthony Bourdain, Road Runner. She reviews for Irish Arts Online, so we saw it a couple of weeks ago, even though it only officially came out two days ago.

Fascinating, but ultimately, very sad because you knew how things ended up. We always watched Anthony Bourdain's shows and were shocked when he committed suicide. Such a shame, even though it seems he had been doing a dance with death for some time.

Two things that troubled us - the film seemed to make a case (possibly unfairly) that Asia Argento was what sent him over the edge into taking his life (she was not interviewed for the film), and the revelation that some of the Bourdain voice-overs were actually AI computer re-creations, and not Bourdain.

Still, even with those caveats, I would recommend the film. Absolutely.

My two cents, for what it's worth.

Signor V.

"For me, there's only my wife..."

"Sure I cook with wine - sometimes I even add it to the food!"

"When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies?"

"It was a grass harp... And we listened."

"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? Every, every minute?"

"No. Saints and poets, maybe... they do some."

Heard of this, thanks for sharing your thoughts...I feel this will be sad and dark to watch knowing like you said "how things ended".

I will be viewing as well since I was a fan reading his books and watching his shows.

SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS

In another attempt to reboot the G.I. Joe franchise, Paramount brings us it's Snake Eyes origin story. And as such, it's the best G.I. JOE movie we have to date, which isn't saying much but it is a start. Henry Golding stars as the title character, who seeks revenge upon the man who murdered his father. A drifter who's enlisted by the local yakuza boss, soon finds himself on the run from the same boss who hired him on when he refused to murder a fellow yakuza member, Tommy. Fleeing to Japan and safe within his family's clan, Tommy does the unthinkable by allowing Snake Eyes, an outsider, the opportunity of joining them. Plenty of great, choreographed, non-stop action. Andrew Koji who plays Tommy actually outshines Golding here, as Golding just seems to shuffle along outside of any action sequence. Nice appearances by both Samara Weaving as Scarlett and Úrsula Corberó as Baroness (although both are hardly in the film). There is a nice mid-credit scene that sets up a sequel beautifully and I would definitely be up for another round of JOE. 6.5/10

JOLT

Kate Beckinsale stars as Lindy, a woman who has difficulty controlling her anger and as such, engages in unbridled violence. To control her problem, she wears an electrified vest that she uses whenever she feels the urge to act on her uncontrollable impulse. The film is a cheesy rip off of The Incredible Hulk meets CRANK and it doesn't work on any level. Kate Beckinsale is an enjoyable actress, but she's so much better than the drivel this script provided. In theory, it's not a bad concept but it is so poorly executed. A low production value throughout, with obvious stage like quality, is distracting to the audience. Furthermore, there's nothing out of the ordinary going on here; just going through the same cliches that comes to a cringe worthy climax during a scene where Beckinsale's character is on the run from the police, attempting to escape from a hospital. Poor performances all around and throughout the film, it's more painful to watch than entertaining. Not surprising considering it's a Prime Original. 4/10

AMERICAN PASTORAL (2016)

In this skillful adaptation of a Philip Roth novel, Swede Levov (Ewan McGregor, who also directed) has lead a charmed life as a star high school athlete, WWII Marine officer, operator of a successful NJ glove factory with a trophy Miss New Jersey wife Dawn (Jennifer Connelly) and a big spread in the 'burbs. But his beloved, stuttering daughter (Dakota Fanning) turns into a parent-hating Sixties radical who bombs the local gas station/post office, killing the proprietor. She goes on the lam, and Swede goes through hell trying to find her. Fanning is excellent, as is Peter Riegart as Swede's father. A tragic, well-done movie.

OLD

OLD follows a group of travelers who are on an exotic getaway. While there, the hotel manager entices a few individuals with exclusive access to a private and secluded beach. The travelers take the manager up on his offer, only to find that once they are there, they cannot escape and they are aging 2 years for every hour they're on the beach. The performances by the actors were fine, with standouts being Vicky Krieps and Thomasin McKenzie as mother and daughter, part of a larger family who are the main stars. As with all M. Night Shyamalan films, he hedges his bets on the payoff that was in this case, meh. I could buy into his explanation at the end, but overall, this was just an average story with some social commentaries on vanity, the pricelessness of time and family, and making peace with old squabbles. 5/10

Murder Rap

Labyrinthine documentary about the internecine feud between Suge Knight's Death Row Records and Puff Daddy's Bad Boy Records in the mid-90s. A feud that resulted in Tupac's ignominious death in 1996 and Notorious B.I.G.'s assassination, commonly thought to be a reprisal, several months later in 1997.

The documentary makes a convincing case as to who and what was responsible for the murders, backed up by interviews with chief investigator Greg Kading, and copious police interview recordings with some of the main players in the murder conspiracies.

Documentary does a good job of keeping things on track considering the voluminous number of names and information flying at you.

In the end I felt rather sorry for Tupac and Biggie. Both, particularly Tupac, were in way over their heads with some very serious gangsters and paid the most serious price for the image their record companies cultivated for them.

Particularly resonating is surveillance footage from the night of Tupac's death where he participates in a gang assault on the man (a Crip) thought to have killed him on chancing upon him while leaving a Mike Tyson fight, pretty much signing his own death warrant in the process.

I invoke my right under the 5th amendment of the United States constitution and decline to answer the question.

THE GREEN KNIGHT

THE GREEN KNIGHT is another feather in A24's cap, who continue to produce fantastic films! This is a beautiful, live-action fantasy of the immortal story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I will admit I had my reservations at first about Dev Patel being cast as Gawain; however, long before the credits rolled, he won me over. He has great chemistry with Alicia Vikander who plays dual roles as Essel and The Lady (with her shining more as the tempest Lady). There's even a brief and mini THE WITCH reunion with the studio bringing Kate Dickie back as the Queen and Ralph Ineson as the Green Knight. Also a shout out needs to go to Sean Harris who plays the King. His small but hypnotic voice and performance are enthralling. A wonderful ride that I'd enjoy taking again soon! 8/10

STILLWATER

Loosely based on Amanda Knox, STILLWATER finds Allison Baker (played by Abigail Breslin), a small town girl from Stillwater, OK who finds herself in a French prison after the murder of her girlfriend and roommate. Matt Damon plays her father Bill, who even 5 years into her imprisonment with another 4 to go, is trying everything he can to get his daughter released. Damon does a great job playing the fish out of water American who doesn't speak the language and sticks out like a sore thumb with his southern drawl, his well mannered demeanor (constantly calling everyone sir and ma'am), and his reliance on only eating American food (in this case Subway) abroad. He's trying to do everything he can for his daughter, even taking multiple trips yearly from Oklahoma to France to visit her. Meanwhile, Allison has pent up daddy issues since Bill was always on the move working rather than raising her during her youth. Less than midway through the film branches out and takes an unexpected turn that builds to a sorrowful third act. A decent enough film that's worth a watch once it's released on a streaming service. 6/10

JUNGLE CRUISE

Another film Disney is itching to franchise, JUNGLE CRUISE finds Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, searching the Amazon for a tree that has petals capable of curing any disease, or in this case, curse. Johnson and Blunt are great together, constantly feeding off of each other in every scene, and even establishing nicknames for the other early on. Surprisingly for Disney, some of the CGI was noticeably bad in regards to some of the animals used (and coming from the studio that houses Marvel and Star Wars, that's saying something). There's nothing new here except the same Disney formula, which still continues to work. Laughs, action, tenderness, Disney knows what they're doing and how to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear a sequel announced sooner rather than later. If you enjoy Disney films, you'll enjoy this as well. One last note, a missed opportunity for not utilizing the song Welcome To The Jungle by Guns N' Roses. I believe it was used in one trailer, but going for Metallica's Nothing Else Matters as opposed to GNR was a head scratcher. 6.5/10

THE TWO JAKE'S.

I watched Chinatown about a month ago and thought it was pretty good. I liked the era and style of the movie. Then this morning around 1a.m., I was searching through Amazon prime and there was The Two JAKE'S, the follow-up to Chinatown. I thought it was great. However, I saw the year it was made and thought to myself "why haven't I heard of this before today?" I wonder how many other great movies are out there that nobody mentions anymore.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD

Warner Bros. gives us another round of villains, teaming up together to save the world and reduce their prison sentences in the process. However, this is not the same 2016 Suicide Squad. Although a few of the original members are carried over, this is a whole new team. In addition, WB tagged James Gunn during his brief respite from Disney and he hit another homerun with this! A wild and unexpected ride, which is exactly what I would come to expect from him. The film opens quickly with Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues and hits the ground running, filing in the audience along the way. The team is lengthy as well; however, each shines in his and her respective roles. Harley is the easy favorite but Idris Elba, John Cena, and Sylvester Stallone (yes, that's him voicing King Shark) could just as easily take that crown away from her just to name a few. Wonderful special FX, especially in regards to the third act. Profane and gory, there's really nothing more you could of asked from this film! With Gunn going back to the House of Mouse for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY III, and Margot Robbie recently stating she's done playing Harley for a while, I'm curious where WB goes from here as I'm sure fans will be clamoring for more after this offering. 7.5/10

VAL

VAL is a wonderful, unflinching, authentic, and humanizing look at actor Val Kilmer. Using footage he shot over his entire career, fans are given a glimpse not only into his life but also into his craft and especially into his most known roles like Iceman, Batman, Doc Holliday, Jim Morrison, etc. It's quite heartbreaking to see him in the unfortunate health situation he finds himself in (throat cancer survivor) and as such, his speech is often difficult to understand. However, I applaud the man for pulling back the curtain and proudly saying to the world, this is who I am! Definitely worth a watch on Prime! 6.5/10

SUDDENLY (1954)
Todd Shaw (Sterling Hayden), sheriff of tiny Suddenly CA, gets a message that the President of the US will be getting off a train in his town on his way to a fishing trip. While Shaw coordinates with the Secret Service and State Police, a trio of assassins, headed by John Baron (Frank Sinatra), and posing as FBI agents, commandeer a home with a perfect view of the train station, and tell residents Pop Benson, his war-widow daughter in law Ellen, and her son Pidge, that they can't leave. All goes well until Shaw and the SS detail chief show up. Then Baron starts shooting, killing the chief and wounding Shaw. The rest of the film devolves into an intense, superbly directed psychological cat-and-mouse game, with Shaw baiting Baron to bring out his inner psychopath to throw him off-guard.

Hayden, one of my favorite actors of the period, is fully up to snuff here. Sinatra, always good as a tough guy, is brilliant in what is probably his best non-singing role. This movie is a little (89 minutes) gem of a thriller.

MULHOLLAND DR. (2003)

Here we go again with David Lynch. Betty (Naomi Watts, in a terrific performance), naive and wide-eyed, arrives in Hollywood, looking for movie work. She finds Rita (Laura Haring), victim of a car crash, taking a shower in Betty's aunt's apartment. Rita can't remember anything, but she and Betty become pals (and lovers) as they search for who/what/where, encountering the usual panoply of Lynchian bizarre and irrelevant characters and situations; spooky music, lengthy camera shots of empty tables, coffee makers, pastel colored walls, etc. Trying to make sense out of this plot is an endeavor as unlikely of success as trying to decrypt the Code of Hammurabi. But, the sheer weirdness of this movie held my interest to the end.
