in tony's dream in that episode
we see in the beginning gloria carmella and ralph all together in the car with tony.
at first carmella have a long hair,
and when we see gloria and svetlana, then her hair is short.
then in the second dream we see tony as a masonry going after ralph to an house,
and then we see livia in some black shadow appearance, she looks like a black ghost standing on the stairs.
what are your thoughts on the dream ? what do you think that means ?
i think livia represent hell and that's when ralph is going before tony.
on the first dream i really don't know what that means...

In car dream, Tony is following his father's path. Carmela is driving as she is guiding the way as best she can and trying to keep everything calm. Ralphie has a Caterpillar that turns into a dark butterfly representing the changing to darkness in Ralphies life. We see Gloria and then Svetlana who are two other women in his life that has more common traits with Tony's mother, then Carmela has. Carmela is driving calmly while Tony wishes for some chaos in his life and sees Gloria and Svetlana as an outlet.

The House is Tony's Purgatory. Ralph goes inside as he is the most recent person Tony has wronged. We see similar houses as the series progresses. The farm where Tony kills his cousin in the next season. We see it again or similar house when Tony is in a coma and goes to a family reunion, here we see his cousin Tony greet him and trying to lead Tony inside. The house is bigger and has an add on due to more people Tony had wronged in the time between season 4 and season 6. That is Tony's purgatory.

That is what my interpretation of the dreams mean.

They represented Livia. Tony and Carmela had arguments but not like Johnny and Livia had. You see the same headbutting from those John and Livia had when. Tony and Gloria or Svetlana were having. Marchand had passed away and they used a substitute on the staircase, which is why the figure was in darkness, so you could not see her clearly. The house was Tony's Purgatory.

You know they really should have used Al Sapienza in place of Steve Buscemi to really drive the point home, but I am sure David Chase was annoyed by Sapienza that he had his calls blocked or did not return them.

Someone had this interpretation in the comments section on youtube: "It's the angel of death looking at Tony. I think the suggestion is that the train of events that will lead to Tony's death has now been set in motion."

Makes perfect sense. In this episode Tony is feuding with Carmine and Johnny, and so decides to call on Little Carmine to help settle things. This is the inciting incident that will lead to the war with New York in season 7 and Tony's death in the diner, whether at the hands of the Lupertazzis or his own fed up family (Patsy/Paulie?). Tony elevates Little Carmine in the latter's eyes, and puts the idea in LC's head that he could be more than just a Capo in Florida that fixes wet tee-shirt contests and run a film company in his sub-species. When Carmine Senior dies, Little Carmine goes to war with Johnny for the boss title.

If Tony hadn't asked Little Carmine to run interference, Johnny would have easily slipped into the role of boss. No inter-family war means Tony B isn't hired for outside help. He doesn't clip Billy Leotardo, Phil isn't bloodthirsty for revenge, and Johnny doesn't have to placate Phil by making him the Acting Boss when Johnny goes to prison. Angelo probably gets that title and Phil remains a Capo. Phil still gets pissed when Vito is outed but he and Tony work together in taking him out and that's that.

Meanwhile Tony B gets made between season 5 and 6 and probably takes over the Aprile crew from Vito and eventually is the one who's made Underboss instead of Bobby in season 7.

Regarding the dream, I think Tony briefly died just a few seconds and was taken on a "test drive" to Purgatory/Hell. He jolts awake just as he takes his first step into the house (or Hell), out of breath, sweaty, clutching his heart, and confused similar to "who am i, where am i going?" Still sort of between worlds when he goes to the bathroom with the red light, then finally comes out of it when he opens the windows to the bright land of the living. He's back at the house with the specter when he's shot by Junior.

And if you look closely in the final scene, when the Members Only guy is walking to the bathroom, there's a picture on the wall of what appears to be the house at Tony's three o'clock.

Good post. I forgot about that picture in the diner. I disagree with Tony B becoming a capo. Remember Tony made Chris a capo and heir apparent which rubbed guys in his family the wrong why. Tony B would have been made and put under Christopher.
It was pretty much setting up an ending for Tony. I still remember that golf game between the Carmines and John Sack. Everything about that was spelling the end of Tony reign with the seeds being planted. In season 5 we see a lot of big names come into the cast, Steve Buscemi, Frank Vincent, Frankie Valli, Robert Loggia, Joe Santos among a few others. Season 5 looked like it was going to be the finale with a big bang. When we look at the seasons, 1, 2, and the first episodes in 3 are different than the rest of the series. It was as if Chase was going to end with season 5 , but ended up with season 5, followed by season 6 as a two parter.
I never thought Tony temporary died during that dream scene, but had a minor heart attack, watch that scene again and you can see a couple of tale signs.

I think a big difference between Tony B and Chrissy is that Tony B would have come up the same way Tony did and got made legitimately and he also did a very long prison stretch. He seemed to be well liked by the other Captains and Sil and was the same age as most of the crew. They got into this situation when Tony gave him the casino to run and Chris lied telling him how Benny was talking shit about it and Tony B said he earned it. Chris did a lot of shit and earned it too, but he was young when he got made and that was obvious favoritism by Tony, especially when Tony passed up Patsy to put Chris in as Acting Capo when Paulie was locked up. There would have been more a sense that Tony B had earned it legitimately, like any other long serving soldier that did a long stretch and kept his mouth shut. You reward shit like that. It's not like Tony immediately promoted him as soon as he got out of prison. If Tony hadn't been the boss and it was Junior, he probably would have made Tony B too.
