Hello BB,

There is a photo circulating on the website Pinterest that I think should be posted up here.

It is supposedly a picture of Salvatore Maranzano.

I haven't verified a thing and am not sure how one would go about doing so.

I have no clue where the photo came from, or who uploaded it.

Take a look...

What do you all think?

I think the person in the photo doesn't look entirely different from the only known and verified photo of Maranzano.

The Dude: And, you know, he's got emotional problems, man.
Walter Sobchak: You mean... beyond pacifism?

Walter Sobchak: This guy f*cking walks. I've never been so sure of anything in my entire life

I have tried to reach the individual who posted this photo in Pinterest. So far no response.

The man in the above photo seems to have the same nose and similar folded eyelids to the only verified image of Maranzano. The man in the above photo might even have the same build, just a tad younger. He also could fit Joe Bonanno's visual description:

"He was a fine example of a Sicilian male: robust, about five feet nine inches tall, full bodied but with no excess flaccid flesh on him, deep chested, with sturdy arms and legs. He was said to be able to snap a man's neck with his thumbs and to leap amazing distances. Maranzano was handsome. He could make his face smile sweetly, or he could look severe enough to make you tremble. He liked fine clothes. He dressed like a conservative business man, preferring gray or blue suits, soft pinstripes on the blues. He didn't wear any jewelry other than a watch and his wedding band."

The definition of deep chested is

adjective
having a large, broad chest:
a deep-chested man.

Another thing I noticed is that the above photo looks like it came from the same era as a similar Joe Masseria photo. They are dressed almost alike. I checked to see if someone merely photo shopped the faces, but it doesn't look like that at all.

That is actually Salvatore Messina who was a London gangster.

Does anyone know when and where the Salvatore Messina photo first surfaced? The facial features are similar between it and the photo in question. That makes me wonder if someone who knew Maranzano in their younger life later confirmed the Messina photo to be him due to the similarities. I can see how someone in their later life could be mistaken. The similarities seem too coincidental to be random.

There was an article posted in the London Sunday Times on Aug. 13, 1967 titled “Messinas and Mayfair: the Links Remain.”

The article featured the picture posted above labeled as Salvatore Messina. I saw a picture of the article once before but I can’t find a link after a brief search.

Also in 2009 The Informer magazine had an article discussing the picture and it referenced the London paper article while trying to disprove the picture as Maranzano.

The Informer magazine is the same magazine that had an issue last year with a picture claiming to be Maranzano and that was later proved to be a picture of some other criminal.

I think the photo in the OP looks more like the only verified photo of SM much more than the photo of Messina.

Messina pictured above was a Sicilian-Maltese pimp operating in Britain.
