In Italy you always see headlines of mafia families or individuals getting tons of money seized from them by the government. How often does has this happened to members of the American Mafia? It is a very effective method. If this is common, can anyone recall the biggest asset confiscation of an American gangster?

It happens. I am not sure what the biggest asset seizure was, but it's standard in the RICO cases nowadays.

I think Franzese had to pay $15 million in restitution. And do the legitimate businesses get confiscated too? Or can the FBI not touch that?

I think they can take anything from a person who is convicted.

I don't know the biggest seizure from American OC members, but to speak to your other point, I believe that the Feds can take not only personal assets, but anything that was acquired with the proceeds of illegal activity.

Even if they own a legitimate business,if the business was started with illegal funds, they'll grab it.

Here's an example from my neck of the woods: When Junior Williams,(the numbers kingpin) got convicted, the Feds took the following: More than $4 million in cash, condos at the Seven Springs resort, a bass fishing boat, a SeaRay boat, a Rolex watch, the ‘Ponderosa’ hunting lodge in Tionesta, a BMW car, two Mercedes Benz cars and the Hotel Tidioute.

They would need to prove that they started those businesses with illegal proceeds though wouldn’t they? Or once they find out that they are apart of a criminal enterprise they have the grounds to take all of their businesses tied to them?

How much were the gold bars worth? It depends on the size but I read that a 400 oz gold bar is worth $500,000. That’s a large one. I would guess that his gold bars were much smaller. Still a huge fortune. I never knew the amount that Massino had to give up.

The feds let him sell the remaining houses himself?
