Although a lot of this info has been posted pretty accurately this site goes into a little more depth. For example it will give info on who sponsored the inductees. It will also clear up misconceptions like when Michael Franzese always claims he was made in Halloween 1975 it was really Halloween 1978. I will post the link below enjoy. You will find induction dates for the most of5 families on it. It will also provide some interesting stories. Just click on which family you want to see

Gambino Inductions

Brief descriptions, in chronological order, of known Gambino Family induction ceremonies from the 1970s.

Dates are approximate and usually indicate when news of the induction was first reported to LE, not necessarily when the ceremony itself took place. It's possible some names listed separately were made together and news of their membership got out at different times.

More info will be added as it becomes available.

===

c. Late January / Early February 1976
- Books open. Each Family initially allowed ten members.

On February 12, 1976 CI reported: "Gambino's have not made new membership as of 2/9/76 due to large number of candidates but initiation imminent."

First wave included:

- Frank DeCicco (40y) (Murdered 1986) [Sponsored by J. Failla]
- Nine Additional Inductees

DeCicco
===

c. Early May 1976
- Joseph 'Joe Butch' Corrao (40y) (Died 2001) [Sponsored by D. Castore]

Corrao
===

May 14, 1976

- "(CI) advised the ban on introducing newly made members to members of other Families has been lifted." CI reports Carlo Gambino 'recently made ten'.

===

c. Early June 1976
- Joseph 'The Cat' LaForte (59y) (Died 2016) [Sponsored by A. Dellacroce]

LaForte
===

June 8, 1976

- "(CI) advised the LCN membership books continue to be open. He mentioned the original plan was to make only ten new members per Family. However, the larger Families complained this number is too few and favored the smaller Families."

===

July 1, 1976

- "(CI) advised there were no 'geeps' (ie foreign born Italians) made in the recent induction of members into the NY LCN Families."

===

1976
- Louis 'Louie Fats' Astuto (46y) (Died 1994) [Sponsored by J. Failla]
- John Gambino (36y) (Died 2017)

Astuto likely candidate for first wave. As an associate he was already close to Family leadership and occasionally chauffeured Boss Carlo Gambino.

CW Gravano stated John Gambino may have been another of the first recruits inducted in early 1976. His recall with dates wasn't perfect however, and he admitted he wasn't certain that Gambino was made before he (Gravano) was.

===

c. Late 1976

Location: Basement of Gagliardi Residence (Bensonhurst, Brooklyn)

Attendees:
- Paul Castellano (61y) (Boss) [Murdered 1985]
- Aniello Dellacroce (62y) (Underboss) [Died 1985]
- Joseph N. Gallo (64y) (Consigliere) [Died 1995]

- Salvatore Aurello (62y) (Captain) [Died 1998]
- Others

Members Inducted:
- Charles Aurello (33y) (Died 2018) [Sponsored by S. Aurello]
- Salvatore 'Sammy Bull' Gravano (31y) (Flipped 1991) [Sponsored by S. Aurello]
- Several Additional Inductees

Gravano: "I was called to Todo (Aurello)'s club. We went to somebody's house, a fellow named Frank the Wap (Gagliardi), we were upstairs, there was a few other fellows there. One by one they called us down to the basement. When it was my turn to go down to the basement there was the Boss, the Underboss, the Consigliere, a few Capos, a few made members, and I took the oath at that point to become a made member."

===

c. Late 1976 / Early 1977
- Gene Gotti (30y)

Gotti
===

March 3, 1977

- "(CI) advised each of the five NY LCN Families have been given authorization to initiate ten new members, and each of the NY Families have already prepared a list of those individuals to be 'made' in the immediate future."

===

April 1977
- Thomas 'Tommy A.' Agro (45y) (Died 1987) [Sponsored by J. Armone]
- Nicholas Corozzo (37y) [Sponsored by A. Ruggiano]
- Leonard DiMaria (36y) [Sponsored by A. Dellacroce]
- Frank 'Frankie the Hat' DiStefano [Sponsored by J. Armone]

L to R: Agro, Corozzo, DiMaria

When the books opened Nicholas Corozzo's sponsor, Anthony 'Fat Andy' Ruggiano, initially refused to put up any of his crew. It was later decided that only Corozzo, his favored associate, would be proposed. Around this time Ruggiano, a Soldier under Carmine Fatico, had volunteered Corozzo and fellow Ruggiano crew member Leonard DiMaria to 'do work' for Fatico and others.

After Gene Gotti's induction Ruggiano brought an unspecified complaint to Underboss Aniello Dellacroce. Full details aren't given but the implication is Ruggiano was offended that Gotti had been made before his own candidate. Soon after Dellacroce informed Ruggiano that Corozzo was set to be inducted and, furthermore, Dellacroce himself would sponsor Leonard DiMaria as a 'gift' to Ruggiano.

===

May 15, 1977

- CI reports 'the books in the Gambino Family are again opened'.

===

June 24, 1977
- Gregory DePalma (45y) (Died 2009) [Sponsored by A. Gaggi]
- Several Additional Inductees

===

c. Pre-July 1977
- Roy DeMeo (36y) (Murdered 1983) [Sponsored by A. Gaggi]

===

c. Early October 1977

- Unsub [Sponsored by J. Armone]

===

October 1977
- Thomas Bilotti (37y) (Murdered 1985)

Bilotti
===

c. Late October 1977
- John Gotti (37y) (Died 2002) [Sponsored by C. Fatico?]
- Peter Mosca (44y)
- Seven Additional Inductees

Reported 11/4/77. CI claimed Gotti's sponsor was Anthony Ruggiano, not Fatico.

===

c. 1977
- Robert 'D.B.' DiBernardo (40y) (Murdered 1986) [Sponsored by E. Zappi]
- Angelo Ruggiero (37y) (Died 1989)

L to R: DiBernardo, Ruggiero
===

April 6, 1978

- "(CI) advised that there has been a delay in new LCN members being made in the NYC area because of the ill health of Joe N. Gallo and 'Vinnie Beans' Foceri, the Consiglieri's of the Gambino and Lucchese Families of LCN."

===

c. 1978
- Armand 'Buddy' Dellacroce (23y) (Died 1988)
- Anthony Vitta (40y) [Sponsored by J. Armone]

Information re Dellacroce's membership was unknowingly passed on to an FBI source (possibly UCA Donnie Brasco) by Bonanno Soldier Anthony Mirra. Dellacroce was again identified as a made member by a Gambino source in early 1980.

Bonanno

The Bonannos were the last of the New York Families to have a member turn cooperating witness. Several made members acted as confidential informants at various times going back to the 1960s, but it wasn't until October 2002 that a formally inducted member, Capodecina Frank Coppa, officially defected to the government. Twelve more members, including official Boss Joseph Massino, turned CW through the next five years.

Following are brief descriptions, in chronological order, of the cooperators' inductions from the 1970s. Also listed are confirmed inductions obtained from these CWs and/or from contemporary informant reports. Of particular note is that, in cases where specifics are available, the ceremonies were handled in a manner very similar to the so-called unorthodox methods practiced by the DeCavalcantes.

Note: Dates for the non-CW involved ceremonies are approximate and usually indicate when news of the induction was first reported to LE, not necessarily when the ceremony itself took place. It's possible some names listed separately were made together and news of their membership got out at different times.

Additions and corrections will be made as more information becomes available.

Columbo

In early 1976 the New York Families agreed to open the books and replenish their ranks. By that time the Colombo Family was down to approximately seventy-five members.

Following are brief descriptions, in chronological order, of known Colombo Family induction ceremonies from the 1970s.

Note: Dates are approximate and usually indicate when news of the induction was first reported to LE, not necessarily when the ceremony itself took place. It's possible some names listed separately were made together and news of their membership got out at different times.

Additions and corrections will be made as more information becomes available.

===

Early February 1976

Books open. Each Family initially allowed ten new members. Those inducted in Colombo's first wave were:

1. Salvatore Albanese (40y) [Murdered 1977] [Sponsored by A. Abbatemarco]
2. Carmine 'Turi' Franzese (44y) [Died 1990] [Sponsored by J. Brancato]
3. Salvatore 'Sally Buzzo' Fusco (44y) [Died 2000] [Sponsored by J. Yacovelli]

10. Thomas 'Shorty' Spero (44y) [Murdered 1980] [Sponsored by A. Persico]

Top (L to R): Albanese, Franzese, Fusco, Gambino
Bottom (L to R): Langella, Russo, Spero

===

There are no confirmed ceremonies for the remainder of 1976. By December of that year the Family was caught up in another internal dispute over leadership. Joseph Yacovelli, with the support of Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco and several captains, opposed Boss Thomas DiBella and the Persico faction. The Commission intervened and ruled in favor of DiBella/Persico, ordering that no violence be committed against those on the Yacovelli side.

The Family then underwent a period of restructuring, with all but one Capodecina demoted and replaced with more loyal members. Among those promoted were first wave recruits Gennaro Langella and Andrew Russo. Anthony Abbatemarco was also demoted, the Underboss position remaining vacant until Carmine Persico's release from Federal prison. Inductions resumed in late February.

- Anthony 'Tony Black' Induisi (29y)

===

October 31, 1978
- Vincent 'Jimmy' Angellino (42y) [Murdered 1988]
- Gerard 'Jerry Brown' Clemenza (27y)
- Vito Guzzo (45y) [Murdered 1987]
- Michael Franzese (27y) [Sponsored by J. Vitacco]
- Salvatore 'Big Sal' Miciotta (31y) [Flipped 1993]
- John Minerva (53y) [Murdered 1992]
- Joseph Peraino Jr. (28y) [Murdered 1982]

L to R: Miciotta, Angellino

Note:

In a 1989 interview with the FBI, Franzese described his induction as having occurred in 1975. This date is repeated in Franzese's books Quitting the Mob and Blood Covenant, published in 1992 and 2002 respectively.

CW Salvatore Miciotta later advised the ceremony took place on the Halloween following Americus Scotese's murder in March 1978.

The date provided by Miciotta more closely aligns with contemporary reports from informants, all of whom agree that early 1976 is when inductions resumed. Sources included made members in at least two of the New York Families.

Details from the Franzese books also support Miciotta:

1. The books state that at the time of the ceremony the Underboss position was vacant. In Fall 1975 the position was held by Anthony Abbatemarco. It was not until early 1977 that he was demoted; the position was still vacant as of Fall 1978 and would remain so for at least another year.

2. John Matera and Andrew Russo are specifically described as being captains when the ceremony occurred. Neither of these individuals were inducted as of 1975 and it wasn't until Fall 1978 that both men were holding the rank of Capodecina, Matera having been promoted that Summer.

Pre-1979

CI reported Cacace was made after helping the relative of a Persico loyalist hide out from authorities.

Those Gambino inductions in the 70s were sure hit and miss, weren't they?

Yeah obviously it’s not 100 percent correct but that’s impossible. But judging from the timelines of when certain things happened it’s pretty accurate. The Michael Franzese induction date is great because he always claimed he was made in 75 and put in Andrew Russos crew when that impossible because Russo wasn’t made until 76 which is the year they officially started inducting new members

You misunderstood me. I know there were some special cases but 1976 was really when the big inductions started happening

the two things that stick out to me is the amount of nepotism and the amount of guys that didn't make it 10 years before being clipped.

Alfred Embarrato was one of two Bonanno members read back into the family. One of his aliases was Alfred Scalisi who was made in the 1950s into the Bonanno family. Both Embarrato and Scalisi matches up almost perfectly except for a few differences.

Just wanted to update with 80's inductions. Again credit goes to LCNbios.blogspot.com for providing this great information.

January 7, 1981
CI Scarpa reported: "[Carmine] Persico is attempting to seek a Commission meeting soon to ask for new members for the Colombo Family, and to that end is having all his Capos reporting on their respective members to give Persico an accurate reflection of the makeup of the Colombo Family."

===

Early February 1981
- Joseph Scopo (34y) (Murdered 1993)

CI Scarpa reported: "[Carmine] Persico was attempting to make ten new members in the Colombo Family but the National Commission approved only the one above individual. [Scarpa] noted that the other LCN Families in the New York area are concerned that the Colombo Family has been taking in too many young and inexperienced individuals and has therefore limited their numbers at this time."

And I said I would. With that, these individuals were throwing out fingers like they were choosing, and Vic [Orena] got up, came on my right, and Benny Aloi came on my left, and Vic Orena took a pin and pricked my finger, drew blood. Benny grabbed a [paper saint and] put the blood of my finger on that saint, put in in my hands, told me to cup my hands. He lit the saint on fire and told me to repeat after him. So many inductions going on and that doesn't even include the Lucchese and Genovese ones. It's amazing that one wasn't bugged or at least surveilled.

.
True although back then it was very tough to be able to infiltrate and bug a induction ceremony. They were able to in October 1989 which was obviously a huge deal. It was virtually impossible to do it in the 70s and 80s Joe Pistone got very close to doing it while undercover before they pulled him out. Also the books were close for long periods. They opened the books in 1976 after a very long time. In 77 and 78 they continued inducting new members. Then in 79 I believe they closed the books for a few years

Hi JCrusher, Great posts! Above you have Tommy Ocera listed as pre fall 1989. Not only is Tommy referred to as being a made man in reports and books from the 1970's (Vicious Circles is one), but also in FBI reports from and intercepted wiretap conversation between Gregory Depalma and Tommy from June,1977 already have him listed as being made. Aside from this, his history goes way back. He was childhood friends with Sally D Ambrosino and Freddy Red Delucia, ran the gang with them and, later in the 1960's, were suspected by Joe Colombo of forming a coup to take over the family. Since Sally D and Freddy were already made before 58, I wouldn't be surprised if Tommy was as well. At the latest it was prior to the phone call with Depalma.

And the words were, 'May I burn in hell like the saint that's burning in my hand if I reveal any secrets of La Cosa Nostra'."

Campanella: "[Cutolo] told me that he's going to pass my name around, and most likely, he doesn't see a problem. That was about a week, week-and-a-half later, got back to me and he told me my name went around to the Family, to other Families, and that there's going to be a ceremony..I had met Robert D'Onofrio, Joe Legrano. We had met in the neighborhood and then we drove to Bill Cutolo's house [and from there] to Long Island..[Cutolo] told me to go in the basement to wait till my name was called..They had called me up. I went upstairs, and Bill had just pinched my trigger finger with a knife, made some blood come out. He put a saint in my hand. He burned it, and just repeated a couple of words after what he said, and that was it, basically, confess yourself to the Family."

Sally these aren’t my lists. I sourced these from LCNBios
