Through the years I would have to say that some members are always put in between a rock and a hard place MANY times. The obvious one is when they themself are facing a LONG prison sentence and ponder whether they should honor omerta or make a deal?

Omerta use to have its perks supposedly. It was suppose to equate into keeping a closed mouth would afford your family on the outside to be taken care of. Not no more. Although I did here about Tino Fiamura remaining loyal to Bobby Manna while he was in the can.
I am sure there are other examples but I often wonder how much help Gene Gotti received for honoring omerta and doing his time like a man?

I guess I would classify a brazen act as someone who is about to defy a superior order from either their Capo, Underboss/Consig or Boss, KNOWING that by obeying it, it could lead to a bad outcome or by not obeying it,it could elevate their own rank within LCN.

What comes to mind is Joe Colombo's refusal to take part in Magliocco and Bonnano's plot to kill Luchesse and Gambino......That was an extremely bold move that paid off immensely for a short while.

I wonder how was Colombo so sure that by revealing this plot, that Gambino and Luchesse would accept it as fact? They could have interpreted it as Colombo himself being power hungry and rejected it's validity.

Can anyone else think of such scenario's that members attempted such a brazen act and succeeded?

Scenarios like when Gotti took out Paul & Gambino taking out Anastasia are more of a kill or be killed scenario.

I wanna hear of a few scenarios of members who risked it all on a chance they would be crossed.

Thanks

Love hearing different perspectives.

John Nardi that even he was an associate tried to take over Cleveland family with the help of danny greene;
Riccobene that refused to obey to Scarfo and survived various murder attempts;
Joe Gallo and his crew story;

Gallos. Kidnapping Profaci administration was the most aggressive internal maneuver against any family's leadership since the Castellammarese War.

"...the successful annihilation of organized crime's subculture in America would rock the 'legitimate' world's foundation, which would ultimately force fundamental social changes and redistributions of wealth and power in this country. Meyer Lansky's dream was to bond the two worlds together so that one could not survive without the other." - Dan E. Moldea

What about Vincent Gigante attempting to rub out Frank Costello. Many things could have went wrong; Gigante trying to murder his Boss is considered treason. After Costello survived the attack; What if he placed a hit on Gigante? Pretty sure, Costello had a few loyalist, who would have taken up on the offer. This should be considered a brazen act despite having the backing of Vito Genovese.

Faffy Iannarella shotgunning Bobby Riccobene in front of his mother was pretty brazen... or downright disgusting.

Gambino had been a backer of the Gallos according to Scarpa so he must not have been a fan of the old Profaci administration. According to Joe Colombo's son, Colombo and Gambino had been close for years. So I presume Gambino happily accepted the news. He gets an opposition boss removed and has him replaced by an ally.

One act that I think should get a mention is Albert Anastasia taking out his boss Vincent Mangano and Philip Mangano. I'm pretty sure that's the first time a NY boss was taken out in 20 years. Then he shows up to a Commission meeting and basically pleads self-defence. I know he had the backing of Costello, but that's still pretty brazen. Bonanno, Profaci and Luchese should have teamed up to take him out but they must have been too scared. I guess they just didn't want to rock the boat. Then again, I'm getting all this from Bonanno's book. Maybe it was a Commission sanctioned hit but Bonanno wouldn't admit that.

What about Carmine Galante attempting to take over the Bonanno's from Rastelli? This should be considered a brazen act; and pretty much signed Galante's death warrant.

Merlino shooting the boss's son. I just can't recall Merlino being in a kill or be killed position before the shooting.

Dominick Scialo?

Tony Ducks' right hand man, Salvatore Avellino, was allegedly manhandled by George Conte. Venero Mangano was slapped around by an associate according to Al D'Arco. D'Arco showed his appreciation to Casso and Amuso for elevating him by skimming off the top. Anthony Accetturo and the Jersey faction spat in Casso and Amuso's faces by refusing to pay proper tribute and refusing to come to meetings when they were sent for. Joey Merlino and Mike Ciancaglini represent probably the grossest infraction in modern LCN history; they tried to whack a boss and his son, put the lives of innocent people in danger in the process.

Dominick Scialo was drunk and slapped Carlo Gambino in the early 1970s and was killed few days after; the jersey crew refused to give to casso and amuso the 50% of the money that made in a year and didn't went to the meeting because casso gave the "Whack New Jersey" order and acceturo knowed that go to NY will be sure dead,In the 1990s Philly was reduced to a street gang so didn't surprised that Merlino win the war.

Dominick Scialo did not slap Gambino. He did get drunk and yell insults at Gambino when he saw him in public, and was dragged out by his friends. He was later killed. The story of Benny Mangano getting beat up by Al D'arco and a friend is suspect.

Al D'Arco may be prone to bouts of whimsy but he didn't claim to have beaten up Mangano. He said a friend slapped Mangano and Mangano backed down.

Is like the story that Neil Dellacroce was beaten by Gallo loyalist in a bar in the 1960s.

I don't think his friend slapped Mangano and lived. There is also a lot of question as to the existence of the friend he spoke of in his book.

I never said it was true. But D'Arco said it. And I don't know why he would lie about it, because it doesn't benefit him in any way to.

Crazy Joe Gallo arranging the hit on Joe Columbo (if he did arrange it).

Joe Columbo creating the Italian American Civil Rights League as a way to take the heat off his son and him, and going on national TV to deny the existence of the Mafia.

Either he wanted to make himself sound tough, or the authors put it in as a way to beef up the book.
