In the history of the mob who was capo at his 20s or early 30s ?
I know that barney was, and i guess frank cali was capo at his late 20s or early 30s.
Also fat tony was at his 30s.
They get to be capos in young age (for the mafia it's young age) because of their leadership quality and the money they making ?

Carlo Gambino was a captain in his late 20's when the commission was set up in 1931. I'm sure he was always respected and considered an earner throughout his time in Cosa Nostra.

Michael Franzese was made a Captain in his early 30's I assume primarily because of his earning abilities as well as being Sonny's son.

John Gotti Jr. was made a captain in his 20's. Although everyone knows that was only because of his father.

The most recent one I'm aware of was Alphonse Truccio with the Gambino's who was a captain of one of the larger crews in that family before being sent to prison.

Meyer I don't think Fat Tony was a capo in his 30's. He was born in 1911 and in the 1940's Trigger Mike Coppola was firmly in charge of that crew as Caporegime. Fat Tony didn't become Capo until the early 1960's when he would have been in his 50's, although no doubt he was Coppola's right hand man and handles things for him.

That's strange because I remember reading somewhere that in the late 1940s fat tony became capo...
But thanks michael that's good to know smile

some that come to mind off top are

- Cesare Bonventre (Bonanno) who was made Capo of Sal Catalano's crew somewhere around the age of 26-28. im not sure why Catalano moved on from his crew. I think it was either law enforcement pressue / Pizza Connection, or because he was promoted to acting boss for a brief time after Galante got killed (and IIRC he had to step down due to language and communication issues). Either way Bonventre was made Capo and was one of the youngest capos, if not the youngest, in post-Appalachin LCN history

- Alphonse Trucchio (Gambino) made Capo at 30 years old or a little younger

- Ronnie Giallazano (Bonanno) made capo under 40 years old and I believe he was acting capo before that for a minute, before he went to prison in the early/mid 2000s. Not sure if he inherited his uncle's crew or what the lineage of that crew was. Howard Beach / Ozone Park , huge crew, lots of associates. i think it was Asaro, Asaro's son and then Giallanzo?

- Greg Scarpa Jr (Colombo) . In the book Mafia Son it says Scarpa Jr was a Capo, running a crew separate from his fathers crew. when he was in his 30s. not sure if this was true, or if the author just called him a captain when he was really a solider in his dad's crew, commanding a ton of young associates under him. He had a big pot dealing ring on Staten Island, lots of young kids working for him. That book also said he officially outranked his father, which i think was total bullshit

- John Baudanza (Lucchese) was an acting capo in his 30s. not sure which crew, maybe his father in law's..which would mean essentially the old Vario crew

Alphonse Trucchio being capo at that age is the most astouning, because his crew was massive and into pretty much everything. one of the most active crews in NYC, definitely the most active and biggest crew in Queens. They had him on tape (an informant was there wired up) at a meeting in NJ sittint with big time guys like John Gambino and the Philly Bosses. he was definitely a "rising star" before he got locked up

I ALSO wondered this......Like when I listened to the Pistone and Ruggeiro recorded calls, Lefty explains how he went at Mirra's captain'S (Plural)......I am 99% sure that 1 of those was a young Cesare Bonventre....No clue who the other person Lefty is referring too. (My guess would be Sabella.....Not sure if Nicky Glasses got knocked down when this all occured.

If a guy like Mirra had to take orders from someone 20 years younger, that must have been rough.

Captains don't micromanage their crews so it's not like they're constantly ordering around their men. A lot of soldiers are happy to just kick up and piece and be left to their own rackets.

I think is like after christ was made and paulie said to give him at least some cash a month (10K if remember well) so the old guys give some $$$ to the young boy and that all.
