1) Front bosses: out the family there was a boss that went to meetings and went to prison (like fat tony salerno);
2)Ruling Panel: every decisione was take by a group of most powerful capos;
3)they had no a gotti or a casso that ruined the family and forced high ranking members to flip for save his lives;
4) no nepotism: no genoveses boss wanted that his son take his place;
5)no greed:Apparently they made more $$$ and share it without conflicts;
6) Every made man try to take a plea and if get long sentences keep your mouth shut and made your time.
7) they had 5 wiseguys that flipped but no rats between the top ranking men aka not another gravano.

Good call Furio. I remember when they killed capo Lawrence Ricci because he REFUSED a plea deal. Very much the opposite of Gotti, no?

They're bosses have always been less greedy with family rackets
For Example in the Late 80s,Early 90s Local 282 of the Teamsters was producing 2'illionna year for the gambino family 80% of that would go to John Gotti and 20% would go to the Sammy the Bull. With the genovese Family they saw about 2 million a year from the San Gennaro Feast . 50% would go to the chin and then 50% of the rest would go to Jimmy Ida and the rest was split between a west side associate and genovese soldier Thomas Cestaro. Since the beginning of Cosa Nostra the Genovese Family was always the richest and most powerful .From Luciano and Costello to Lombardo, Gigante and Cirillo.

It boils down to two things they've always had: stable leadership and less greed amongst its members. The real question is how did they succeed at this while the other families failed?

Vito Genovese was like Gotti because don vito ordered to kill costello;he wanted Apalachin meeting that generated more attention on the mafia; ordered to whack more Ruling Panel people ecc.
At the end the genovese leadership understand how made for don't have another Vito Genovese.

The Genovese are more discreet and professional.

Compared the other 4 families, we don't know too much about them.....

They weakened other families unintentionally & caused havoc when chin refused to whack Black Pete Savino resulting in various convictions for the entire Mafia since the Windows scam was shared by all

They were also lucky ie attempted Gotti hit would have been major news and attention brings heat. Bobby Manna went down for that but had it gone ahead, the order would have been traced to the top and there would have been bigger investigations

Vito Genovese time as boss did a lot of damage to the family. Up till the early 1980's, the family seemed to be divided between two factions, but they upheld the rules more so then the other families. The 1970's shows the Genovese family not pressuring a lot of their relatives to join or become associates to the family as the other families, but to go legit if they have the means. The Boss valued input from some of the top capo's, even if it went against what they wanted, more so when Gigante passed away. The other families killed or shunned relatives of informants, while the Genovese family brought them closer to the folds or help support them sometimes when they are down on their luck.

The two bosses met in 1988, in a Lower Manhattan apartment. Vincent "the Chin" Gigante, in a bathrobe, pajamas and a four-day growth of beard, sat and spoke with fellow Mafioso John Gotti.

After a brief business discussion, Gotti proudly told Gigante that his son, John Jr., was now a made man.

"Instead of congratulating him, Chin said, 'Geez, I'm sorry to hear that,' " recalled Sammy "the Bull" Gravano in his biography, "Underboss."

Vincent Cafaro'son Thomas when his father flipped he decided to plead guilty and go to prison to assure the Genovese family that he was still loyal.

I don't know but the other rats:Barone,Arilotta ecc had relatives in the life ? and if yes what they had done when they flipped ?

Luciano and Costello admired the Jewish gangsters like Arnold Roethstein. They embraced capitalism, networking, the American way of life in the 20th century, and shunned the Sicilian concept of tight knit families driven by pride and mistrust of outsiders. They recruited people of this mindset, who themselves recruited people of this mindset, which resulted in the Luciano/Genovese family being lucrative and resourceful for decades, right up to this day.

My 2 cents there only as strong as to were there members are the bronx and nj. Id guess if you go to brooklyn the colombos and persico family would be stronger there or cali and cefulo and the gambinos. Maybe you go to queens all them guys massino made are probaly still a force there. The lcn rules are pretty strait forward a made guy from boston mass or a made guy from philly and every where in between are equal to there rules which is why they lasted 100yrs. Merlino is a boss with 40 50 members in my opion probaly respected as a boss equal to the nyc guys pride an ego aside or it doesnt work. Ya barney and cefulo have the most guys in the country and most rackets but the powers the same. Probaly not whatever.

Back to what why were thinking on the board a few months ago did merlino and barney meet or was there not anuff money on hand for a sit down above that capo patsy parello. Either way id bet between probaly crea and whoever the gambino guy is they've met cause to much money to be made or lost. In nyc booming ecomony.

Yes - although they don't use the name on the street now, it's funny the family was named after one of the worst bosses they had and not after Luciano or Costello.

There was probably little objection to Vito naming the family after himself because it just made him a lightening rod to authorities, which I'm sure the Luciano/Costello faction was perfectly fine with. I doubt Luciano ever really wanted people walking around attaching his name to the family's rackets, anyway. Doesn't seem like his style.

My vote is HELL NO. No way Barney met with Joey Merlino. What would Barney gain by meeting with him? Nothing. Patsy could handle it and then tell Barney.

Lately there has been a lot of Genovese activity in northeast Queens. A failed hit. The Bonelli situation. I had no idea there were so many Genovese up here. I thought it was mostly Bonanno as you said. Must be the Corona crew moved eastward.

Vito just happened to be Boss when the "naming" was done by the FBI (the Valachi testimony)

Some stuff on the chart is just ridiculous. Not sure a lot of people called him Don Vitone either.

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

-Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso
