Does a consigliere have their own crew? I mean besides the normal stuff like shy and sports betting, what typical rackets are consiglieres involved in? Would your average consigliere make as much as your average Capo? More? Less?

Well imh opinion a Consigliere's job is too deal with the big scams such as the Construction deals and the Union Extortion etc so he takes a percentage of that and kicks up to the Boss, the other family's end goes to the Capo's involved

As far as how a consigliere earns money, I personally think that this differs from family to family..

It seems like in some families the consigliere receives a portion of the money kicked up to the administration and in others he has his own rackets going.

To start with, a consigliere, before he is ever made such will be a captain from a strong earning crew withing a family. Very rarely will a Boss make a nobody brokester a consigliere. Before being made the number 3, he will be a Capo, a good earner, and have an influential crew. When made the number 3, the consigliere will turn annoint his right hand man the title of Capo of his crew so he can attend the duties of the family and his newly minted Capo can handle the day to day issues of that crew. The consigliere will still retain any rackets he has of his own, get money kicked up from his old crew and will take a share of any money the administration of his family gets as dictated by the Boss.

He can be a stand-alone, meaning that his full time job is to counsel the Don (in which case he gets some of the money kicked upstairs to the Don), or he can have his own regime, and keep it while he advises the Don. I agree with that except Scarfo wasn't really that wealthy. After the Bruno hit there were several high ranking guys that got killed also, which moved Scarfo that much closer. Due to Scarfo's close ties with Bobby Manna, the Genovese advised Testa when making him boss to make Scarfo either Underboss or Consigliere. Scarfo would jump over his Captain in this case Freddy Iezzi. Scarfo was surprised Testa made Casella underboss and Scarfo Consigliere. I think Testa was trying to throw a bone and make a peaceful transition. It ended up costing his life. Philly is really an exception to the rule. Scarfo was made Boss and he chose soldier Chuckie Merlino as his UB and Frank Monte as consigliere. Inside the NY Families this is very rare. Only a few occasions that I know where a soldier is made Consigliere.
