Sorry if this subject has been brought up recently. I'm just curious on the state of the Bonannos & Colombos. I know they are the smaller NY families, that's really why I'm asking.

I find this on Bonanno family

https://www.google.it/amp/www.nydailynews.com/amp/new-york/nyc-crime/exclusive-mob-boss-rebuilding-left-crime-family-article-1.2499943%3f0p19G=e

Mob boss rebuilding what's left of Bonanno crime family

JOHN MARZULLI  JAN 18, 2016 4:00 AM

He's got the worst job in organized crime, but somebody’s gotta do it.

Meet Joseph Cammarano Jr., the top banana on the street for the beleaguered Bonanno crime family — or what’s left of it.

Cammarano has been anointed acting underboss, a federal prosecutor revealed in Brooklyn Federal Court last week at the arraignment of three Bonanno gangsters, but sources say he wears a second hat as the crime family’s street boss, too.

Cammarano’s promotion has the blessing of the Bonannos’ jailed official boss, Michael (Mikey Nose) Mancuso, sources said.
Despite the setbacks the crime family has endured over the last decade, sources say cutting off the heads hasn’t killed the beast.

“It’s clear they’re trying to rebuild,” a law enforcement source told the Daily News.
But, with an FBI target on his back, Cammarano probably doesn’t have much time to make his mark.

His father, one-time underboss Joseph Cammarano Sr., died in prison in September 2013 while serving time for a gangland murder. The family has had a succession of at least six bosses since Joseph Massino was arrested in 2003 and decided to become the highest-ranking mob rat in history. Ever since then, the family has been infested with informants and cooperators.

Cammarano Jr. “is a unique man,” defense lawyer Elizabeth Macedonio wrote to a judge in a 2007 extortion case. “He is defined by his sense of selflessness, his strong commitment to family and his endless contributions to his country and community.”

Despite the praise, the mobster was convicted of strong-arming a Colombo mob wiseguy. He served out his 27-month sentence in prison.

Known as Joe C. Jr., the 56-year-old Cammarano grew up in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, joined the Navy after graduating from high school and served on a nuclear submarine in an elite patrol unit that conducted classified missions.

His wife, Angela, is the daughter of Bonanno soldier Vito Grimaldi, who owns Grimaldi Bakery in Queens.

While he was in the can on the prior case, Cammarano and his wife “both miss(ed) the mundane aspects of their relationship like sharing tea at the end of the day,” court papers revealed.

The couple lives in a modest home in Glen Cove, L.I. .

Great question. I wish this was just about The Columbo Family. I wonder if there is a Columbo Family anymore. Are they about the size of the Philly Family or DeCalvalcante Family? 30 made members?

I always wondered if The Columbo's would get absorbed by another family or just dissolve and go away....

Both the Colombo and Bonanno families are still very much alive. Each have a functioning hierarchy with a little over 100 total members. The idea that either family is near defunct is simply false.

For the record, the New Jersey and Philadelphia families each have 40-50 total members and a much lower ratio of associates compared to the Colombos and Bonannos according to more recent estimates.

Jerry Capeci had the Columbo's at 75-85 members back in 2011. How many of those were guys like Little Vic doing life in prison? No way there are 100 members.

I just sent Jerry Capeci an email asking him to write an article on The Columbo's.

I'm aware of that article. Capeci's estimate for the Colombos was relatively low compared to other estimates. Same for the Gambinos. Incidentally, his estimate for the Genovese family was relatively high. The 2004 New Jersey OC report had the Colombos at 112 members (see below). There were also articles in 2009 and 2014 that cited 100 members for the family. Again, it's total members, not just active on the street.

Both of those families are very active. I'm not sure how they are doing, but I doubt they are doing bad. It's business as usual.

All the families had 100 made men each but the colombos problem is always the same: a boss that doesn't want to retired and a series of acting bosses, street bosses ecc that can't seriously run the family.
The bonanno after Massino flips in 2004 doesn't had a boss until Mancuso and Cammarano as acting boss.

Now both the families are active and trying to rebuild and have more members that went out the jail, can fill the ranks.

Interesting. Was John Contello demoted? I also wonder about the status of Anthony Calabrese and Vinny TV.

Anyone know a guy named Robert "Cousin Bobby" Napolitano ...or Bobby Nap or Nappy as they also call him? I was in Fort Dix with him a few years back. i just cant believe this guy is a wiseguy. the biggest punk anyone has ever seen. The Italians didnt even stay with him. He stayed with rapists and rats. Apparently before I got there he got knocked out by some Albanian junkie and he cried and never did got him back. Then some black guy smacked him. I saw that for myself. And then when he went to the east side of FD...he got beat up again and did nothing. Then it comes out that he use to have sex with some dude here and then he had to check in and went back to the west side. I heard hes out there acting thr part. I just dont understand how his people allow that. There were many other cases of wiseguys getting punked out and even extorted while I was away but Bobby Nap by far takes the cake!

For a New York wiseguy, he ain’t too smart.

By JEANE MACINTOSH

Federal prosecutors have moved to yank the $2.5 million bail of longtime Gambino crime-family associate Robert “Cousin Bobby” Napolitano, saying he “quickly reverted to his criminal ways” days after being sprung from the slammer last week.

In papers filed in Manhattan federal court yesterday, the feds said Napolitano, a longtime enforcer and collector for the mob, ignored a judge’s order and started fraternizing with convicted felons, asking them to help identify anyone cooperating with the government in the case against him.

Napolitano was arrested Sept. 20 on a slew of charges. This in 2011 now Napolitano is free.

I dont recall hearing he was a rat but he definitely was viewed as a punk and no one spoke to him. And then it came out he was a closet homosexual.

Add up every member in jail for life
Add up every member in jail for 20+ years or more
Add up every member over the age of 70
Add up every semi-retired or Florida member

Subtract that from the total membership.

Other families are still very much active. The Bonannos more so then the Colombos. Bonannos have been getting stronger, mainly because many people over look the arrangement made between Giovanni Gambino of the Gambino family, and Vito Grimaldi of the Bonanno family. Anthony Rabito made some sort of arrangement with Ally Shades of the Genovese family back in the 2000's and an arrangement with Lubrano and Santorelli of the Lucchese family.

Your last post got my attention, exactly what are these arrangements, if you feel like elaborating?

Whats the John Gambino/Grimaldi thing?

Combining all those serving 20 years up to life, maybe a dozen, give or take.

Quote:
Add up every member over the age of 70

This is where you really get off track. Look at the ages shown on the charts. 70 is prime age as far as the NY mob is concerned. Maybe 80 or above would go more to the point you're trying to make. And for that you can probably add another dozen or so.

Quote:
Add up every semi-retired or Florida member

This one is harder to tell but the number for semi-retired or otherwise inactive is probably a good chunk of any mob family. But the above 80+ members would figure into that since you're apparently saying they become a non-factor due to age.

Even if we assume, for the sake of argument, that half of the family's membership is doing long stretches in prison, is semi-retired or inactive due to age or other reasons, that still leaves about 50 active members on the street. While I don't put a whole lot of stock in associate figures, if we go by the standard member-to-associate ratio we see (1:5) while also assuming only half of them are on the street, that still leaves the Colombos with a total manpower of roughly 300 members and associates.

Beyond all that, look at the cases against the Colombos over the past 15+ years. Have they declined compared to the past? Of course. But they continue to have a functioning hierarchy and ongoing criminal operations in the New York area, as well as Florida to a much lesser extent.

Here is the thing, and I have studied the charts for the last 12 years, time after time I see guys busted in the newspapers as Capos, longtime soldiers, etc. and I look back at the charts and the guys aren't even listed as made members. Never even heard of the before. So you can take the family charts, subtract all the guys in jail or dead, then add about 20 to 30 for the guys that slipped through.

For example, you got two guys that are at least soldiers, maybe higher in news articles recently. They aren't on any old charts (that havent been updated) You have Robert the Old Man DeBello who is a longtime soldier not on the charts and you have Eugene Rooster Onofrio who supposedly made his bones in 72, supposedly inducted after his release from prison in 79 and has went under the radar the past 30 years while not only being a made guy, but was also a major player in the Genovese Family. So the charts aren't really the tip of the iceberg, I would say the made guys unknown to the public are the tip of the iceburg. So there are roughly 20 percent of made guys we don't know about, some are even acting capos. We have to realize that fact and take things in perspective. No one is omnipresent.

Gambino had first picks from Sicilians coming Palermo providence, while the Bonanno family had first picks from Trapani providence. This is an arrangement of recruits. There are a lot of Zips in New York City, who are made but do not belong to one of the Five Families, they belong to Castellammarese, Villabate, Bagheria, or Palermo families, but operate in the states. The recruits can not be made with a family from Sicily. Operation Old Bridge shed some light on the matter, but not the full details of the talks.

The arrangements Rabito made with the other families were really matters of peace and making money in certain neighborhoods without stepping on other families toes.

Does no one remember the party the Bonannos family had less then a year ago.

Inside the Bonanno crime family's Staten Island Christmas party

The Staten Island shindig, at Bocelli Restaurant on Hylan Blvd., was mandatory for crime family members.

It was a “family” Christmas.

The newly minted Bonanno boss Joseph Cammarano Jr., hosted the crime family's annual Christmas party at an Italian restaurant on Staten Island that was voted one of the best eateries in the city by the Zagat guide.

The six-hour food fest was held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Bocelli Restaurant on Hylan Blvd. under the watchful eyes and cameras of the FBI and the NYPD, according to papers filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.

It was mandatory attendance for the crime family's administration, which included reputed consigliere Anthony Rabito and more than a dozen capos and soldiers, the court filings say.

The Old World-style restaurant is located in a strip mall, but the Zagat guide praised the upscale food at Manhattan prices.

Former boss Joseph Massino used to hold the party in his restaurant, Casablanca, in Queens.

Cammarano, 56, controls the family's "day-to-day criminal activities," according to court papers.

Cammarano's promotion to acting underboss and street boss, exclusively reported Monday in The Daily News, is a sign that the beleaguered family is trying to rebuild after the prosecutions and defections of its members in recent years.

Bocelli's owner did not return a call seeking comment about the Christmas party.

That very interesting, I gotta comb through that Old bridge indictment more closely.

This is still an ongoing thing? It's been 8 years going on 9 right? It would actually kind of explain why the Bonnanos have 17 crews, Gambinos maintain a high number of crews, but, like say the Luchesses and Colombos stay around say, 100 guys and about what 8-10 crews?

I always kinda got the impression these families been doing this since probably the 50s, the Gambinos and Bonnanos I mean....

I ask because of NEW BRIDGE, and the recent deveolopments with the Calabrians in NY. You got any idea how that works currently?

Are these zips working on a specific purpose like moving drugs, or do they just operate like an American wise guy?

I'm willing to bet there's some overlap and some of those are the same crews. I doubt the Bonannos have 17 crews. They were said to have 15 crews at most in the late 1990s/early 2000s before the indictments really started coming down.
