Keep a baseball bat handy, and keep the dog on a really short leash. Be careful!!!

TIS, Most of the time they are out late at night or in the early morning hours. I have seen them in the early afternoon too on occassion. They usually will run away from humans. They will definitely go after small dogs so be careful. Carry pepper spray or a bat or stick like SC suggested just in case. We had a bunny that was living in our backyard (you know how they are out of control here in the hills) and one night I heard an awful sound. Sure enough it was a coyote that got the bunny. Poor bunny.

There is no where for these coyotes to go and not enough for them to eat to survive. So, they will go into the residents' backyards and eat their pets. I think they had to put 14 coyotes down a few years ago.

I am not afraid of them though.

I'm in Fountain Valley near Mile Square Park. One morning my daughter is letting one of our dogs out to our back yard to do his business when she saw a coyote! He quickly ran away, but our dog is little and if she didn't see that coyote it could have been the end of him.

A couple years back at work in Costa Mesa, near Harbor and Fair, I was parked at Fairview Developmental Center waiting in my car for something and this guy was walking near the parking lot by the administration building and all of a sudden this coyote walks in front of him. This one didn't run away like most of them; it acted like it wanted to play with him!

But to what you said, individually they normally run away, but when they're in packs it's a different story. They can act like a pack of wolves. Smaller and not as dangerous, but they'll attack an adult human when they pack up. There's been a big increase in the population over the past several years because Animal Control doesn't kill them like they used to. They are basically wild dogs, but not as vicious. When raised from pups they can be raised as pets and will breed with dogs.

cops are getting scarier by the day, the way that one cop threw that little lady to the ground he could have killed her.

police conduct continues unabated throughout the country, you could see the beginning of vigilantes against the police, in light of all the killings it could some day happen.

F1,

Would you believe that since the last post in this mini discussion that I almost got into 2 separate physical altercations with "my people"?

There are lowlifes and pond scum in every culture and without getting into too much detail..the scumbags try to scam and hustle the ones who they don't fear. If you hold your head high, go to school, go to church the losers think they can get over on you and that you won't stoop down to their level to handle things.

I'm no tough guy but if I didn't stand down or become a coward growing up in violence crack era Newark NJ....no way I stand down to these punks.

But this is part of what I was talking about the internal issues that hamper Haiti and Haitians. People are content to remain peasants and live and act that way.Once I stopped seeing them as rational human beings, but as the scum that they were I spoke in the language that scum understands.

Cowards, just like I thought.

If this element of Haitians were the ones going into DR ....no wonder they passed laws to remove all Haitians.

Sorry to hear that, gets, unfortunately scum like that exists in every society. There's an evil aspect to human nature that a lot of people allow to control them. People complain about police brutality and abuse, which everyone rightly condemns, yet we wouldn't need police in the first place if people didn't kill, rape and steal. The higher the number of thugs, the higher number of police are needed to deal with them. When the thugs vastly outnumber the police, then you get anarchy like, unfortunately, Haiti.

Reminds me of a conversation I had the other day with a typical liberal. He was questioning me about foreign aid and I was trying to explain that it wasn't as simple as he thought it was. You can't just throw money at problems and expect them to go away. I reminded him of Live Aid, the 1985 mega-concert that was formed to raise money for starving Ethiopians. After they raised the money and sent it to Ethiopia, the Communist dictator Mengistu stole the money for himself and his thugs. The people who set up the concert never asked themselves why were the Ethiopians starving in the first place. The ever-complicit media, showed images of starving Ethiopians and blamed it on drought conditions. Nobody asked why was there a drought after the civil war and the Communists took over. They forgot how Stalin blockaded and starved the Ukraine in the 1930s. Mengistu was the cause of the mass starvation, and the money would have been better spent if it was used to hire mercenaries to go after them. Instead, the liberals enriched the thugs and left the masses worse off than before. I don't know if I got through to him; usually when I give out facts they just change the subject.

Getting back to your situation, if more righteous people like you were able to band together in Haiti, it would be a much better place.

F1,

You know I call you "Cross T's & Dot I's", you support your views with points and facts....so person challenging them best cross every T before debating you.

I've stated that the aid industry is a big charade, that was never designed to do what it professes to do publicly.

It's designed to sustain itself.

The greater evil is that it exploits human beings' genuine compassion for their fellow man. Several middle men get rich..the donors feel better......the poor people get peanuts if anything...and aren't being helped in any meaningful way.

The guy debating you should have thanked you for opening his eyes, because whatever his intent is...the answer is NOT "aid"

I don't know if people just don't have time or don't have the inclination to dig deeper to understand issues but it's never as simple as the five minute news segment "explaining" the story. If a person were aware of past atrocities...like Stalin and the Ukraine...it would be easier to place similar stories in context. But Russia was an ally during WW2 so THAT atrocity doesn't get as much coverage as others.

It's a bit sad that in modern world..where information has NEVER been so readily available that we choose to remain willfully uninformed.

Thanks for the compliment but I don't think of myself as particularly righteous and I'm going to explain the comment I made earlier about Black people and religion. The negativity and despair in Haiti drives a lot of people TOWARD religion in much the same way that the conditions of slavery/jim crow drove a lot of Blacks toward religion. Super religious folks. Religion supersedes everything in their lives and it stunts a lot of personal development, growth, and PRACTICAL education.
There's a quote about how , in the 'hood...there is a church on every corner(and a liquor store). Churches are also everywhere in developing countries. Lot of singing, lot of praying....but year after year, decade after decade the lives and conditions of the people in the church do NOT change.

will continue disjointed rant later

Thanks, gets.

I debate a lot of people, maybe far more than I should, for the purpose of informing. I don't relish fights or the sort of trolling hit and run arguments that a lot of these internet fools get into. After sounding semi-rational, that internet debater ended up writing a bunch of gibberish and how he needs to stop doing cocaine. Whatever. I wish I could get a refund for all that time I wasted on him.

On the church and Haiti, obviously there's little I can write about that. You know far more than I do and I must defer to you on these matters. However, I will say this, if they have anything in common with the churches in the hood, then that might be part of the problem. Years ago I had a first hand chance to examine a lot of the black churches in Los Angeles. For a while I attended a black evangelical church. Almost everyone dressed well and worked as professionals. There was a message of personal responsibility in the sermons and it made a difference in people's lives. This church was the exception.

Most of the other black churches fell into the following categories: the theologically liberal/black nationalist churches that taught victimhood, the more conservative health and prosperity churches that taught that God will make you rich and personal responsibility is irrelevant. Then there is the third category -- and some of these churches overlap with the other two -- where church is basically a social club. The first kind of church teaches anger, the second teaches greed, and the third teaches self-centeredness. The problem isn't the number of churches, but an excess of the wrong kind of churches. And those are just the Protestant churches and doesn't cover the Catholic churches or less traditional groups such as Santeria and Voodoo. You may or may not agree, but I hope you understand my point.

According to the latest info, the killer was a fan of the VA Tech shooter and the Columbine killers. The TV station did the right thing by letting him go. Don't see how anyone could predict anything like this.

@ Rock,

The messages the shooter left behind are a stew of all types of nonsense...praising the Va. Tech shooter, praising Colombine shooters, saying Black men discriminated against him for being gay, saying White women discriminated against him for being Black, the stations he worked for fired him unjustly...he was bullied, yada yada

Whatever reason he decided to target innocent people, F him.

About 6 times in my life i narrowly missed being in places where a catastrophe goes down..so I cringe whenever I read about stuff like this.

It's just such a sad thing. And a monstrous act. When these people take their own lives can't they just do it without taking more people with them?

I mean this was caught on camera. One of the most disturbing things I've ever seen.

I think it says a lot about what kind of emphasis we put on mental health. We need to do start doing something about that. And for God's sake can't we go a week without some nut going off on a killing spree?

Work can be a dangerous place. I was medically retired after being attacked by a patient while on the job in a state developmental center. In another facility one of the staff was beaten to death by a patient.

I heard this morning that today was gonna be the hottest day of the year here in SoCal. My area to be around 100 but I hear valleys will be 105+. We've had hotter but IMO it's been pretty decent this summer as far as 100 degree days.

We've been relatively cool this summer. Only in the 90s most of the summer.

Our local paper regularly runs stories about health care workers at our hospital being attacked by patients--as if the workers' jobs aren't difficult enough. mad I'm sorry you had that experience, F1.

Thanks, man. Usually the papers out here (Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register) only write something if he health care staff did the injuring, not the other way around. There's a high injury rate and they have be reported to OSHA, but there's little interest by the press.

You're right, race had nothing to do with how he was treated, but he was paranoid, saw himself as a victim and imagined all the "racists" were out to get him. So far, even though he claimed that his victims complained about him, it hasn't been proved that they even knew each other or even met. One story is that he was mad because the lady he killed replaced him after he was fired.

As for gun control, he passed all the background checks. He didn't have a criminal record. So how are you going to keep a clean guy like that from legally getting a firearm? I wish there was a law that prevented bad guys from getting any weapons, but a scenario like that is only in the movies like "Minority Report." The guy was known to have a bad temper, but having a bad temper isn't a crime. The police had to remove him from the station after he made a scene when he was fired, but the police didn't arrest him. Even if they did, it probably wouldn't have been a felony. So what's your SPECIFIC solution?
