I've been to Italy three times and I've decided to go back next February (end of winter) to see the masked 'Carnival'. Is the Mafia membership only derived from the very south of Italy, or all over? What's the place all the Gambino family hailed from, with the exception of Gotti? I wouldn't mind checking out a bit of Venetian OC history.

once there was la mala del brenta, a gang located in the area
today it's just a camorra offshot and some calabrian and sicilian infiltrations
there are also foreign gangs

Maybe the biggest tourist trap in the world. But American Yuppies love to talk about visiting Venice and Milan and Tuscany like they've seen the second coming. These people need to be tortured.

A lot of the Gambino Family members came from the Palermo area. Like Tommaso Buscetta said in his book, the Gambinos were the most palermitan family of NY.

I've heard the canals stink and are nasty.

Of course they're in Venice OP. They're all over Italy and in other countries too.

Why would you go to Italy or any country on a vacation or for travel and want to see OC stuff? Do you have a death wish or something? It's akin to an American going to Oaxaca, or Chiapas and wanting to see stuff about cartels.

All the Gambino's are from Palermo, Toretta specifically.

Now that's what I don't get

I mean sure, Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples do carry that sexy decadence North Americans and Northern Europeans love to experience…along with worth seeing art museums, monuments and such…

But Milan?

I've lived there for quite some time due to a college exchange project so I've seen all sides of that city…and I just do not get the fascination.

Milan (the touristy side) can be seen in 48 hrs top! Go check the Duomo and the nearby galleria, Castello Sforzesco, the Nineteenth Century Museum (all walking distance from one another) and you're done.
All that along pompous boutiques that sell the same overpriced stuff some spoiled brat can find everywhere but wants to buy it there just because...

If you venture just beyond the "1st ring" it feels like an Eastern European city.
Dirty as heck, polluted, beggars for miles to see, decadent 1970s and 1980s cement condominiums, graffiti, the worst sidewalks/pedestrian paths north of Naples, etc…

Milan makes more sense as a field trip destination for us OC buffs.

Name an Italian/Foreign crime group and you can bet that they have someone operating in town.

From the LCN to the Latin Kings…a messy multiethnic underworld for the cops to pretend they give a crap about.

If they stayed longer…Milan could have made it happen

sorry if I dragged the conversation off topic.

on topic now

Like others have promptly said, today it's mostly southern Italian and foreign (albanian, romanian, and the whole eastern block crowd)

some leftovers of indigenous groups have recycled themselves as independent shylocks hanging around the three main casinos in venice (Ca' Vendramin, Casino Lido and another one across the street from the airport).

The last big bust took place in 08 when a bunch of former members and associates of the Mala were arrested along former right wing and left wing terrorists (from the infamous 1970s Lead Years) for wholesaling drugs to other smaller groups throughout Northern Italy.

The nearby town of Mestre is overrun by Northern and Central African gangs.

Until he got arrested in '08 Silvano Maritan, a former Mala del Brenta enforcer, was controlling few districts in that town and was said to be the last who could force foreigners to kick up to him.
