Demeo worked a job delivering milk.

Lucchese had a job doing some kind of tailoring or something like that. That is where he got two of his fingers cut off.

Don't most of American mafiosi have jobs? I thought at least all bosses and capos are owners of companies, restaurants, or business agents for somebody etc. In Italy they are often unemployed, but that's because they spend much time as fugitives so nobody is able to control whether they have legitimate income.

That Bonanno guy who was clipped a few years ago was hit waiting for a bus to go to his construction job.

MORGAN: Why didn't you fight him at the park if you wanted to? I'm not goin' now, I'm eatin' my snack.
CHUCKIE: Morgan, Let's go.
MORGAN: I'm serious Chuckie, I ain't goin'.
WILL: So don't go.

My first thought was that he was on his way to a rigged "no work" job. Maybe I've been influenced by the Esplanade episodes in the Sopranos.

Lol is that how it works in real life? A bunch of made guys get together in a circle and bullshit all day in lawn chairs while the other guys work? Seems like it would be pretty obvious to catch them doing that?

Nah the closest thing to a real no work job is these positions that most unions fight to keep in every contract. Basically a guy who's job would be phased out due to technology but is kept on to appease the union. These are usually the senior guys in the union or a relative of the pres or something. Usually these are the first positions that go if the contractor and the union have a cash agreement.

Just about everyone had or has either a business or some sort of W-2 Job
Buffalo Capo Joe Falcone was an sports memerobelia dealer
Buffalo/Yticas Benny Carcone was the VP of a heating oil company
The Colombos Dominic Bretti ran an employment agency
The Buffalo turned Columbo's Jake Minnecone worked for a wholesale produce company

Been there and done it

Nope. If they have a union job, they don't even show up except to pick up their paychecks.

Exactly. One guy supposedly keeps track of everyone's hours but doesn't even have to be there. Gets overtime and everything. Makes Ike 200k a year and barely shows up. Controller or something they call it
Does that make sense Skin?

I was under the impression he does a lot of outside sales work with large level operators. As owner I would assume that means working with the high volume restaurants and/or the 2 unit restaurants and up.

The majority of produce (and food sales) biz is commercial sales not person to person market business.

Cheech, the position you are describing is called Payroll Master, and it is the best position to place an associate or made member in. The position Skinny is describing is either Controller of Operations or Contract Controller I believe, which is a powerful position to have and it is usually held by the senior members of the union or by a close relative to the president or senior members as Skinny said.

Most of the smart members have a legit job to show for income to the IRS, even if it is a no show job.

That's what I always thought. I figured that most of the jobs were no show....nobody really thought John Gotti sold plumbing supplies door to door.

I thought many had partnerships in legit businesses- maybe they were invited in for protection, or were cut in to pay off an outstanding gambling debt. And once a mobster becomes a partner, then you get into money laundering....

Your talking about shop steward positions in different locals. They do the time and get all the over time too.

Then you have Operating Engineers Local 14 nyc Master Mechanic (Shop Steward) Thats a 250k a year time keeper. Compressor operators, welder maintenance guys- Operating Engineers Local 15 you have oilers,Maintenance Foreman, Generator guys, etc.

Local 20 Concrete Laborers Give 1 guy on a big job the coffee route,lol... full scale but just sells stuff.

Teamsters stewards at big jobs do nothing.

The show up jobs and hang around jobs the feds consider feather bedding. then there are of course no show jobs.

In union construction, especially NYC area, if you get a friend a job its conspiracy. In the corporate world, its just getting a freind or family a job.

This doesn't make sense, what's the logic behind the conspiracy label?

It makes no sense, but its a fact. If your italian and a union construction member in NYC or NJ, the Feds already consider Mob run. Many construction unions already have federal monitors watching everything. I see it because I work Union Construction,

But the companies he had control over exhorted the garment district. Businesses in the district were only allowed to do business with those four companies. If another trucking company solicited business in the district, there would be problems.

It's one of the example of way it's hard to tell if a mobster actually "worked" a legit job, because so many "legit" companies were fronts for shake-down rackets and just businesses where on the shady side.

Same thing with Paul Castellano, very successful in the wholesale food business. But I think had more success due to being Carlo's cousin rather than being a skilled business man. I wonder how many contracts were won through a visit of "Big Paulie" to explain the ways of the world to a potential customer.

One thing that stuck out in my memory about Castellano's meat/poultry business is that they were supposedly selling bad product to the public. Maybe these practices were widespread in those days, but I'd hate to think that I was eating tainted and mislabeled meats. I used to shop at Waldbaums, and Dial Meat products were likely on their shelves....

Sorry for quoting Wiki (under Frank Amato), but I read about these scams elsewhere, also:

"As a butcher employed at Dial Meat Purveyors Inc. and the Meat Market, he was involved in the selling of rancid and expired meat products. ... In Bosses: The FBI and Paul Castellano, FBI Special Agent Joseph O'Brien suggests that at Dial Meat and the Meat Market he was taught by Castellano's men how to bleach tainted, outdated, uninspected meats or meats of a dubious provenance by using a white preservative powder known as "dynamite" that gave the faded, discolored meat a healthy fresh red appearance. Frank was also shown how to drain meat of any foul smelling juices it had accumulated by using formaldehyde and use counterfeit United States Department of Agriculture stamps to assign meats a false grade or expiration date. O'Brien would also state that at Castellano's meat suppliers he would have Amato and fellow butchers carve meat and label it as "beef" that was not always carved from cows and "pork" that was not always carved from pigs."

Wow, not too surprising though. Sounds like some of the sick shit going on with China's food industry these days. Though I've heard the "pig bung resold as Calamari" thing is an urban legend.
