Hey guys, just stopped by the famous Central Street Grocery in New Orleans and picked up a few of their world famous Muffulettas. Do you guys have this Godly creation in Philly and NY or is it exclusively down here in New Orleans?

I'm pretty sure most women shave down there these days, LA. But you know southern girls better than I do.

My wife makes that for us, and we are in the north east of England, so it is about as far away as you like.

She saw it on some cooking show and has made it a few times since. Lovely!!

Welcome, padrone. Good to have you here!

Mrs. Mark has some friends who go down to "N'awlens" a couple of times a year. Every time they come home they stop at Central right before the airport. We usually get 1 or 2 of the sandwiches and they are absolutely terrific! The olive salad is great and we usually get an entire jar.

Throughout Chicagoland and the suburbs, there are many delis that offer some pretty good imitations and versions of the original recipe. Making it at home is also an option if you have a good Italian grocery/supermarket nearby (Caputo's rocks). However, finding the bread that mirrors Central Grocery's exact taste and appearance is next to impossible. Once you have had the original from Central, everything else has a tough time measuring up.

When I went in December for the New Orleans Bowl. I waited in a line outside of Central Grocery for 30 minutes to get two of those bad boys. Ate on them for the rest of the week. It's on the "to do" list every time I head to the Crescent City!

If I ever get to New Orleans getting one of these at Central Grocery is on my list of meals. The look really good everytime I see them on TV. I agree with Mark that the toughest part with making this at home would be finding the bread. It's the same with many good sandwiches. I've had deli at Katz in New York and while the pastrami was excellent the bread was different than the rye we get in San Francisco. Same thing with steaks, I've had both Pats and Genos and while making those correctly at home isn't as easy as they make it look (I'll keep trying!) it's those Amoroso rolls make all the difference! Until somebody starts selling them in the Bay Area I'll have to survive on Molinari sandwiches.

"Tomorrow we eat sandwiches. You gotta go on a diet, Vinnie."

You can easily find Muffuletta bread in or near most large cities where there's a large Italian/Italian-American population like PHL, NYC, most of NJ, etc.

Several years ago while traveling to Cali, we stopped at that Central St grocery anticipating a nice Muffuletta and what do you know- that was the only fuggin day they were closed, so we had an imitation somewhere else and it was just so-so. I finally got one in Jackson Miss.
