With all the forensics and rats and general FBI pressure.. does the mob really kill very often anymore? Does anybody have a body count for say... the last 10 years? It seems to me nobody goes that far these days.

heres a list ivyleague made for all the families.

For the Genovese, robbery/extortion victim Louis Antonelli in 2008. Soldier Rudy Izzi in 2007. Acting captain Larry Ricci in 2005. Associate Nick Cirillo disappeared in 2004 - this involved the Bonannos as well. Captain Al Bruno in 2003. Also acting captain Ralph Coppola in 1998.

For the Gambinos, associate Robert DeCicco was wounded in 2007. Captain Carmine Sciandra was wounded in 2006 but that was a personal beef.

For the Luccheses, soldier Frank Lagano killed in 2007.

For the Bonannos, soldier Anthony Seccifico in 2009, associate Rudy Pizzolo in 2004, associate Frank Santoro in 2001, and Montreal captain Gerlando "George" Sciascia in 1999.

For the Colombos, soldier Joey Campanella was wounded in 2003. Underboss William "Wild Bill" Cutolo was killed in 1999.

In New England, you probably have to go back to the in-figting in the 1990's when Billy Grasso was killed, Frank Salemme was wounded, etc.

In Philadelphia,Gino dipetro in 2012 killed by nicodemo(allegedly), associate Johnny "Gongs" Casasanto in 2003, soldier Raymond "Long John" Martorano in 2002, captain Ronnie Turchi killed in 1999, captain Joseph Sodano killed in 1996. Also a few other associates, like Anthony Turra, Gino Marconi, and Adam Finelli, killed in the late 1990's/early 2000's.

In New Jersey, DeCavalcante associate Joseph "Joey O" Masella killed in 1998.

In Chicago there Anthony "Little Tony" Zizzo disappeared in 2006, Anthony "Tony the Hatch" Chiaramonti was killed in 2001, and associate Ronnie Jarrett was shot in 1999 (later dying in 2000).

In Buffalo/Rochester, associate Anthony Vaccaro killed in 2000, soldier Carmen Barillaro killed in 1997, and captain Johnny "Pops" Papalia killed in 1997.

In Pittsburgh, associate Ernest Biondillo killed in 1996.

In Detroit, associate Gerry "The Blade" Bianchette killed in 2002 and associate John Jarjosa Jr. killed in 2001.

I remember reading an article a while back stating that the modern Mafia really won't kill someone unless they really need to. As the OP stated, forensic evidence and better prosecution methods make murders more risky than ever before.

I also suspect that general cultural assimilation may also play a part in the decline of violence. Remember that most Italian immigration occurred in the U.S.A between 1870-1920. Many immigrants lived in impoverished neighborhoods where gangsters were viewed as the most successful and wealthiest. Although most Italians were legitimate, there was still an eager supply of recruits that were willing to break legs and kill for some easy money. Nowadays Italian Americans are far more educated and legitimately prosperous than say their grandparents. They don't need to resort to a life of crime to make a living. Plus traditional Italian American neighborhoods such as Besonhurst have been phased out with other groups (having an ethically uniform area could bred loyalty and a distrust of outsiders, which the Mafia capitalized on for many years) Add to that that sucessful law enforcement infiltration (Donnie Brasco and Jack Falcone) make mobsters less eager to seek out new recruits. Hence, why La Cosa Nostra has been contracting for the last 30 years or so.

The point is that guys probably figure that they can't resort to killing all the time, because there aren't enough young bucks to replace dead wiseguys than in the past. Even John Gotti over twenty years ago commented that new recruits were getting harder to find when he was in charge. I'm sure some young kids in New York still want to join up, but there just isn't enough of them to keep disposing older mobsters at a high rate.

5 confirmed murders by Genovese last 10 years is pretty impressive

That's a family that still has shooters and willing to show discipline

They are clearly the strongest and most violent LCN Group

Not to mention the bodyguard in the jewelry murder case went
Nuts and had a shoot out with cops and died I believe a few days later . Weird shit

The most recent in the 90's/2000's Boston area are all somewhat linked to a made guy in the Patriarca's, Billy Angelesco and his associate Gene Giangrande:
Peter DeVito at Squires strip club (Angelesco acquitted even though he did it in front of a crowded bar)
Patsy Squillante
Bobby Santasky
Mucka McCormack

Artie Nigro had Tony Arrillotta the soldier from Springfield do a shooting in the Bronx for him to prove his loyalty, this was either just before or after he was made

Of all of them the Larry Ricci murder in 2005 took the most balls, the guy was on trial when he disappeared only to be found in the trunk of his car.

Tino Fuimara didn't fool around. Ricci was told to plea out, and he disobeyed the order. Ironically, he beat the case - post mortem.
