Wanted to call this thing All Appalachia All The Time, catchy but pompous as hell, specially from somebody who knows jack shit. I know what the average schmoo knows from following the zillion reports since that milestone confab in 57.

What I don't know is what they were busted for, what law they had violated, those that managed to track through the bush only to land in the clutches of the Mayberry Marshals. And whatever they had come to settle (heard all kind of stuff), why'd it take 100 plus mopes, if reports are to be believed. Some accounts said they were all bosses! 100 bosses!

Point I'd like to make is, forever after Appalacha when I heard 'organized crime', I'd reflexly think of that cozy, sleepy burb upstate NY. Think of the catering, lodging, amenities for that many palookas! TP alone must have been carted in by dump truck. And to think if not by chance some cowboy cop had been a wee bit curious, only those involved would've ever known it even took place! It certainly took well ordered planing and and cooperation of many disparate egos to even conceive of such a convoluted undertaking--in secrecy yet. And, remember, these guys were poor uneducated immigrants from an undeveloped island across the ocean...who could barely speak English!...-No wonder Hoover said they didn't exist...the embarrassment!

Do you guys believe Vito Genovese is the one who tipped of the authorities? I think it's a real possibility because the more I read about LCN the more I think Genovese was real piece of shit, just the kind that would do it. He wanted to run the whole thing and would do anything to get that power. What a dick.

If that is the case, that is unbelievably messed up.

That how you took that, mate, that 'I heard it now?' Didn't meant to imply that--but you know the saying, England and America, two peoples separated by the same language.

Far as the age, you're in the ball park--or do you lads call that something else?

I don't think genovese tipped the cops.the commission meeting was held at the same spot just a year before from what I've read genovese called the meeting.I did read somewhere they thought carlos Marcello tipped the cops cus of the attempt on costello but its prolly bs. And the cops went to his house when they noticed limos and nice cars with out of state plates I think and joe barbera son renting hotel rooms up.probable cause there huh?

while Appalachia is interesting, I think the "little Appalachia" meeting held in NY is far more interesting.

Although is does seem interesting that one cop after seeing a few cars would have the brains and interest to round up enough bodies to throw the dragnet that they did.

I guess we'll never know...

I think someone had to have spilled the beans. They just couldn't have had the manpower just sitting ready to catch all those guys driving and running. The police were just too ready. Imo

They had been watching Barbara for while. Local police had been informed that a mobster had moved to area, and they had eye on him. They called in all other area departments for back up. Not much goes on there, even today, so police have a lot of free time. State troopers are always available, so they were called in.

If the men there had just stayed and not run, they would have been better off. They could have just said they were not committing any crime, which technically was true. Running like fools made them look guilty and worsened the publicity.

I once seen Carlo Gambino and some one else was the rats, because they never trun up at the meeting.

Vito Genovese was said to looking to take over the whole lot for himself, but they Gambino & Co set up the meeting to make him look like incompetent fool.

After the meeting set up Vito Genovese was set up on a drugs case by the same people who set up Appalachia.

Now like everything else to do with this meeting and almost anything gained particular in books and papers we read Gambino & Co having any part in rating could be BS.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Castellano at that meeting and was picked up..??

I doubt Gambino would have set it up and then had his nephew attend...
