I watched The Drop with James Gandolfini in his last movie role.

It was good, not great. Missing a little something.

I watched The Grey with Liam Neeson for the second time.

It holds up well, good character development. I would strongly recommend.

Just watched The Breakfast Club for the 100th time this evening, still a classic and holds up well to this day.

I just re-watched most of Resurgence and it was just as bad the 2nd time around. However, one thing I didn't realize the first time that I watched it was the remarkable technological progress the human race made in just 20 years. There's now a base on the moon with combat and other aircraft routinely traversing that interplanetary space. There's also remarkably powerful laser canons and other seemingly advanced technological gizmos with which to fight the aliens. If it were only true.

Watched DeNiro's brilliant portrayal of Bernie Madoff in "Wizard of Lies." I knew the basic Madoff story prior to seeing the movie, but I wasn't aware of much of the details. In the end, I think Madoff has shown almost no remorse and is too narcisstic to understand the degree of the lives he ruined.

Michelle Pfeiffer was also great as the pathetic Ruth Madoff. Hank Azaria played a character the viewer could dislike from the very beginning.

Just watched the new It. Very good. Scary but also has humor and a lot of heart, which is very rare in horror.

I finally got around to watching the new It. It's pretty bad. Same problems that affect a lot of modern movies. Overlong; overdone shaky cam; overuse of CGI; reliance of jump scares; complete absence of subtlety or nuance.

Just a generic modern horror movie piggybacking on the name value of the original and Stephen King.

It misses the levity Tim Curry brought to the role of Pennywise, the new Pennywise just tries too hard and misses the mark.

I think it failed to expand on the original in any way and any new things it brought to the table were just unnecessary and felt flat.

Very overrated!

P.S. The kids were all okay apart from the annoying, four-eyed dweeb playing the Richie Tozier character.

For the first time in a very long time watched 1947's B&W Kiss of Death with Victor Mature and Richard Widmark (his first film) as the psychotic gangster Tommy Udo. For those of you who haven't seen it, Widmark's portrayal leaves any similar portrayals in the dust. Give it a look.

Re-watched "Billy Bathgate," from the E.L. Doctorow novel about Dutch Shultz and the kid (Bathgate) who inveigles his way into Shultz's mob. Dustin Hoffman is outstanding as Shultz.

Absolutely. But Bruce Willis stole the show with his bit part.

Saw “Spotlight” on Netflix. Great story about Boston Globe put together the Catholic priest sex abuse scandal. Very sick how the church turned a blind eye for decades about pedophile priests abusing boys & girls.

In one last cover-up attempt it was interesting how this movie was released in Dec. 2015 getting buried in Star Wars hype when “Force Awakens” was also released.

Tonight I watched 1968's The Brotherhood starring Kirk Douglas. A few things caught my eye. First, Kirk's brother is a returning military officer just like Michael. A la Vito turning down Sollozzo's deal and Sonny being receptive to it, Kirk says no to a deal proposed to the Commission, but Kirk's brother says yes to it. The movie starts off with a wedding at which Kirk dances with his daughter a la Vito dancing with Connie.

The Godfather was published in 1969; I don't know when Puzo wrote it. Perhaps he was inspired by The Brotherhood. Any thoughts?

Doesn't look like it. Corsican Brothers and King Solomon's Mines coming up, so it's an adventure afternoon.

I've always gotten Cooper and Grant confused.

I've recognized a sub-genre of movies called, "The British Messing Around in Everyone Else's Business." A lot of great movies on the subject: Braveheart, The Man Who Would Be King, Zulu, Gandhi.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET is easily Martin Scorsese's best picture since 2006's THE DEPARTED and another great performance by Leonardo DiCaprio. My first introduction to Margot Robbie as well as Jon Bernthal. Terrific job casting of Jordan Belfort's friends: Jonah Hill (Donnie), P.J. Byrne (Rugrat), Kenneth Choi (Chester), Brian Sacca (Pinhead) and Henry Zebrowski (Sea Otter). They really played well off of each other during each of their scenes and genuinely seemed to get along. Matthew McConaughey steals the few scenes that he's in (particularly when he takes Jordan out to lunch). Credit also goes to Rob Reiner for his role as well for some comedic relief.

WINCHESTER was absolute garbage. Cheap scares and a very lame story plot. Helen Mirren was decent but even she couldn't save this ship from sinking. My suggestion would be to avoid this one! 4/10

I thought The Wolf of Wall Street was terrible.

American Psycho is a better, and more realistic, portrayal of the same kind of people.

This weekend I did a Soledad Miranda/Jess Franco double-feature with VAMPYROS LESBOS and SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY. VAMPYROS LESBOS is the "Tarantino effect" on me as it's considered in some circles, to be one of the 10 best grindhouse films ever made. No other director has influenced my taste in other movies like Tarantino; hence the reason he's my favorite director of all time. KILL BILL opened me up to Asian cinema and likewise when GRINDHOUSE was released, he opened me to that genre as well. SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY had too much of a THE BRIDE WORE BLACK feel to it, which I feel is a superior film and was released only 3 years earlier. Soledad Miranda did have a presence on screen and sadly, these are the only 2 films I've seen her in. What's even more sad is the fact she never got to enjoy her new found fame as she was killed in a car accident shortly after these films were completed but not yet released.

I also rewatched Dario Argento's masterpiece SUSPIRIA. I don't know what it is but the last 3 times I've seen this, I've enjoyed it more and more. His use of lighting in this is a case study within itself. A good score, great story, and great acting, particularly from star Jessica Harper and Stefani Casini.
