I've heard he made a lot of enemies in the underworld and nobody respected him. How come he didn't get whacked sooner?

He mightn't have been respected too much but he was needed (by Giancana etc.). He had a great way of making people talk, or getting a message across to others we somebody had crossed Giancana. In that way he was invaluable to have on your side.

What's with his pyjamas wearing and Satan worshipping routine? Didn't he get whacked because the bosses didn't like his freaky madman behavior?

I think they finally feared what he might say when he got indicted. If he hadn't got indicted he would have lived much longer I think. He really was one sick dude though. Perfect aide to Sam Giancana!

One of the craziest hitters in Chicago's history. A lot of sick stories about him, such as the time when someone did not pay back his loan to Sam and hid in the city. Sam found him, beat him and tied him to hot radiator, then invited the victims family to a meal. After they finished eating, he brought out the guy to show the rest of the man's family that he had returned. Before he released him, Sam had the entire family urinate on the guy. The Bosses were afraid Sam antics might make his tongue slip. They ordered his death and gave the contract to Tony Spilotro, who had much to fear as he was in the same trial with Mad Sam. I don't know if Sam was made or not, I am pretty sure he was only an associate.

He was killed because he started getting too much public attention after his trial, and talking too much bullshit.

The Chicago outfit was known for being extremely violent and sadistic, even by Mob standards. I would say Sam was a perfect fit as an enforcer and killer.
Because of the fact that he was absolutely n-u-t-z,the Outfit never took a chance on making him,but he was widely feared and respected nonetheless.
As I understand it,the goofy courtroom antics, and the bullhorn horsesh*t were good for a few laughs, since they occurred during fairly minor cases, but after Sam and a couple of his guys were indicted for the Foreman homicide, and it looked like he was going to continue the sideshow, the writing was on the wall.
The top brass feared that Sam could harm the cases of his co-defendants, so the order was given and "The Ant" went into damage control mode, giving Mad Sam a couple of rounds of buckshot.

Dyno was knocked down because Aiuppa & Accardo were terrified of him. He had absolutely no respect for either of them whatsoever, and they couldn't risk him being on the streets.

I have always wondered about this: Does this include females in his family? If that assclown punk Destefanso made the guys daughter or wife expose herself to urinate on their husband/father then he should have been whacked out on general principle.

I hate this dude just for thinking that could happen. I hope the devil is making him sit on a huge shaft every day for eternity. Sorry for the rant...

He didn't get whacked quicker because he was an earner.

After he got indicted and he acted a fool then he became expendable.

He apparently had a soundproof basement in his house, which was in the Austin neighborhood (then upper middle class, now one of Chicago's worst neighborhoods), where he would take people down to torture them. Somebody should go to the house to see if it's still there!

He is rumored to have once kidnapped a random black guy on the south side, take him back to his house and forced the guy and his own wife to have sex, to punish her for something.

His protegee Spilotro finally killed him with a shotgun. Shot his arm off, then shot him again and finished the job.

There is a book on him called "A Mob of His Own."

Spilotro was a protogee to Joe Lombardo. He & Dyno were tapped to do a few jobs together, but that was the extent of it. Tony was terrified of Dyno & Nicoletti

I doubt Accardo and Aiuppa were terrified of him. He was a loose cannon and drawing too much attention. Once Giancana was out of the way and they had an excuse, they whacked him.

Accardo terrrified of Destefano? No way. Maybe concerned about what he might say, but terrified, no way.

Even Giancana had to have a talk with Destefano about "talking too much."

Murray Humphrey cautioned Ricca and Accardo that "crazy Sam" was drawing too much attention. But Sam's earning pontential probably kept him alive longer than most expected.

I don't think think it's out of the realm of possibility that Aiuppa and Accardo were concerned that he was a threat to them seeing as he was one Mooney's guys.

Sam was a mad man, I'd be scared of what he'd do too, especially if he was still around when Mooney was killed.

Yes, no doubt he was a Giancana supporter, but his antics were also not in keeping with The Outfit's policy of trying to avoid publicity. All these guys got a certain degree of publicity, but engaging in some of the stunts Destefano engaged in were not good for Outfit business. Plus he was crazy and just might say the wrong thing/s and cause trouble.

Combine both reasons and it is clear why he was eliminated.

I have some additional information I'll share relative to this subject when I return home. Currently visiting family and not on my i/pad or pc.

Thanks for responding.

DeStefano, Nicolletti, Milwaukee Phil, Battaglia, etc the Taylor St heavies didn't have too much respect for the Accardo & the Grand Ave people. Tony Accardo was a very tough guy in his day, and a preposterously wealthy & powerful boss, but he & his crew were never particularly feared by Taylor St & the southside crews. He was the perpetual mediator. But he wasn't a gangster in the vein of Ricca/Mooney/Battaglia/etc, and none of the Taylor St guys would've layed down for him. DeStefano was absolutely beyond insane, like a cartoon character. People did what they could to stay on his good side & just stay out of his general peripheral. He was also a gatherer of men, and was hugely respected by young guys coming up. Of course they were afraid of the many ways in which he could have stunted their takeover.

Could possibly be another reason why "Mad Sam" lasted as long as he did.

Unfortunately, yes you do. Maybe do a copy and post in URL and get a very brief summary.

Basically the article states that DeStefano was "kicking-up" a lot of money to Accardo ....... for many years.

Sam wasn't made, just a tremendous earner, millionaire loanshark.
The fact that his own brother was one of the shooters that murdered him tells you that Mario DeStefano knew his brother was himself a homicidal psychopath who had it comin'. The bosses were displeased with his latest courtroom antics and bizarre behavior especially then unnecessary publicity it brought. It was time and Mad Sam had to go

Mad Sam was a SICKO,without a doubt. While there have been other guys that were borderline serial killers as well as many with no qualms about dismemberment,Sam took torture and murder to a whole new level. It is reported that he would be overcome with joy when crossed and therefore given a "reason" to inflict some damage. He looked forward to mayhem like no other man.In addition to this,he was also a sexual deviant. The story previously mentioned about him and the black guy is true.He kidnapped the guy at gunpoint, drove him to his house, and made his wife have sex with him.Supposedly,he did this because his wife had the temerity to argue with him about something earlier that day.The black guy was then driven back to where he'd been kidnapped and dropped off.He immediately reported the twisted incident to the police.Sam claimed to love his wife dearly.Imagine if he didn't like someone what he would do !!!!
