Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 05:36 AM

In theory, it seems like a good idea. However, with the way some movies are remade, it would be a disgrace to Francis Ford Coppola's work with the original. I just don't feel confident about who would be selected for the cast, or the way they would go about it.

Another thing, I don't want the GF to be glamorized like everything else in today's media. The GF is a great legend, something that should be referred to, but not the way the media does it. Kinda like the Holy Bible.

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 10:53 AM

I would re-make it, but set it in the modern day in a non-mafia situation. And I wouldn't use any of the dialogue from the original film, or call it "The Godfather" I would shelve the gangster element of it and concentrate more on the novel's underlying themes: corruption in authority and the importance of family over society. I suppose it would really be a different film but "based upon" the Godfather

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 11:38 AM

A GF IV is okay for me, but a remake isn't. The best part about GF I and II were the actors, who were some of the best of the last 30 years (Brando, De Niro, Pacino, Caan, Duvall,...). Plus they played their top part in The GF, an accumulation of quality
Actors whoressemble them could play a younger version of the characters in flashbacks in GF IV, but they could never replace the originals.
And who should direct it? Scorsese, Sergio Leone (is he still alive), ... ??

Leone is no longer with us sadly, he died in the late 80's.

He would have been about 60, as he was born in 1929. Such a shame, he's one of my favourite directors of all time.

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 06:25 PM

I agree with whoever said placing it in another setting, kind of like some directors do with Shakespeare. The themes and basic plot outline could be the same, but it would have to be completely different than the original movie or else it would be suicide for who ever was involved. I could see this story happening in a political family... something similar to the Kennedy's. Or make it really different, and set it in an African tribe with subtitles or something like that. Or communist Russia. Or fuedal Japan.

The GF themes can play out for a family in any time period, so I think something like this could work. But you'd have to distance yourself from the original. I mean this is THE most loved movie in American cinema...

It could be called, "A re-imagining of the themes present in The Godfather placed in a completely different setting."

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 06:45 PM

I don't see any reason to remake the Godfather. The only films that I think are worth remaking are either those that are potentially great but let down by pretty stupid flaws, or those that are so badly dated that a modern version would improve them. Films like White Heat and The Public Enemy spring to mind.
For me, The Godfather is about as perfect as a film can get. So there is no room for improvement there. And as for it's age, I would say that generally films were much better in the 70s than they are today, so a modern approach to it wouldn't neccesarily be able to improve it. Plus the fact that Pacino, Duvall, Caan and Brando are among the best actors ever, and to replace them with an equally talented cast would be nigh on impossible.

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 06:49 PM

I get the Shakespeare analogy, but I don't see any merit to a remake of this great film.

In fact the idea of a computer enhanced hit on Sonny is just awful.
Posted By: DeathByClotheshanger

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 07:09 PM

I agree. A straight up modern remake of The Godfather would be a disaster. I can see some hack like Brett Ratner getting his hands on it and thinking that he's actually improving on the original film. Then they'd set it in Tokyo and cast Jackie Chan as Luca Brasi and Chris Tucker as Michael.

However, tweaking with the setting, but keeping the overall plot and theme of the movies intrigues me. Especially the feudal Japan one. That could be awesome. Plus it would be so different it wouldn't even resemble or feel like a Godfather movie. We'd just be watching and picking up on various plot points and themes.

I'd be smiling as I was doing that too. Most people here would too.

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 06/16/05 07:53 PM

Nice to see other people in favour of a complete "makeover", shows I'm not completely mad

If it was going to be a "regular" remake (ie cover only the events of GFI, no rise to power stuff) then perhaps it could open with the attack on Bonasera's daughter (a very dramatic opening scene, two tough guys beating up a poor defenceless maiden). This would help the audience to understand Bonasera's anger. It should also show the actual job being done by Gatto and his men, and show Bonasera weeping with joy when he reads about it - i.e. the audience sees the whole Bonasera story from start to finish, rather than having it feature in two scenes only.

Another idea is to tell the same story as GFI, but shot from different points of view. So we don't see the horse in the bed or the hit on Vito, but we do see Gatto being approached and converted by Barzini's men, and Sonny conducting the war while Micheal is in Sicily. This would avoid the difficulty of re-making classic scenes while remaining faithful to the original film.

no

You left out:

Harvey Fierstein as Luca (or perhaps Fredo?)

And We need some dance numbers:

"Enter the Turk" with whirling dervishes
"The Lightening Bolt Tango"
"The Tom You're Out Shuffle"
and the "Death in the Tomato Patch Solo interpretive dance (at the end the kid comes out with the bug spray thing)

Harvey Firestein (or however you spell it) would be just divine as Bonasera.

Speaking of dance numbers...we'll probably need some sleeping fishes.

I like it. Get the same person who did the costumes for "Cats" and have about fifty "fishes" all hanging in front of a big blue backdrop and we can then lower Luca's Body into the "sea" to a snappy tune.

I really don't understand what the reason would be to remake The Godfather. I think the age of remakes is a disaster to film and people should be a bit more imaginative. Why screw up a wonderfully written and visually stimulating film?

No, I dont think it would be a COOL idea...

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 07/19/05 08:27 PM

I think if you are going to do a GF4.....you need to make sure that you explain what happened from after Mary's death till Michaels death....Vincents reign of the family, and so on.
That would be hard to do with everyone being soo old now. What makes the GF movies soo great is the settings.....back in the 50's, 60's...the era probably could not be recreated. It would not work in the 2000 era.
I say go back and show us Sonny, Fredo and Michael as kids, experiencing life as a Corleone......show us how they interacted, Sonny's temper, Fredo's wussiness, and Michael defiance. Show us what it was like when Vito was the king.....of course, it would be hard to portray him, but they have done more than that with movies, so it could be done. Maybe have Michael on that chair at the end of GF3, sitting back thinking of his brothers, and their time together.....and maybe when he thinks of Fredo, and killing him.....that is when he drops dead.
Whatcha think???

NO.

We already know all of that, from GF and GFII. There's no need to tell a 'fill-in' story of the Corleone sons as boys and what made them the men the became (and didn't become).
Who cares? The important parts of the story have been told, and told extremely well.

It would be like cutting a big hole into the middle of a luscious cake, filling it in with paper napkins and then icing over it to make it look as nice as before. Somebody cuts in expecting a yummy treat...and gets nothing but paper and air.

Basically, you'd be ruining the cake.

Leave it alone; and let the fans use their own imaginations (if they have any) to figure out every little detail that wasn't wasn't put on the screen.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like that on the screen but I agree with Apple that they should just leave it alone. I'm sure they'd screw it up and we don't want to think of The Godfather TRILOGY as a piece of sh*t. Plus, they'd have to probably cast Ben Affleck or Jennifer Lopez just to give it that last little bit of studio execs "we think it's a good ideas but all the fans know it'll suck" feeling

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 07/20/05 03:38 AM

I think that would be a great fuckin movie idea. And look at Pacino now-a-days, hes still got the look thats possible for the role of Michael Corleone. But, the one question is, you need 165 other minutes to make a great movie. You got the beginning and end 10 down pat real well though.

I hate remakes and I hate the rumors for a GFIV. If they were going to make one, they have to make sure that it is after my death so I wouldn't have to watch it (I mean, if I was alive, then I would be curious, lol). The thing about a fourth film is that Godfather will equal Star Wars, and I don't really want that. We don't need a series of sequels/prequels. The last scene of GFIII shows Michael's death and even though it does leave many questions because of the fast-forwarding of the years between, it doesn't matter: Michael is dead. I have always thought of Michael as the protagonist of the film. I can't really see a film that centers on middle-age Vito and kid-Michael. In other words, Al Pacino is Michael. And if there was a sequel/prequel-thing like Part II, I have almost zero interest in Vincent.

As for remakes (which I hope will never ever happen for as long as live), I can't really imagine anyone taking over any of the roles. Even though I am actually quite fond of Danny DeVito (De-Vito! ... get it?) he is no Marlon Brando or Robert De Niro (yeah, I get that the remake cast is a joke but still ...) When I first saw the first GF film, I thought that Jake Gyllenhaal had a slight resemblence of Pacino but after I saw the whole trilogy, Gyllenhaal doesn't even come close to the acting skills Pacino has.

Just ask Hollywood to stick to original storyline and everything will be okay

Would you accept such an idea like that???

I personally would [b]NEVER
accept such an idea like that because of many reasons!!!!

*What about you?
I really would like to know WHY? after you vote...

Considering how Hollywood no longer considers the art but simply looks movies as product to be moved, nothing would surprise me.

I bet that there's one thing that's going to make you get so surprised and that is....

IF the remake was going to be made...
Danny DeVito as Don Vito Corleone

I think there is a circle of classic films that Hollywood will never touch -- but I wouldn't be surprised if someday they are remade.

And let's face it... some good films have been remade and have been improved upon so it's kind of like the cycle that good art goes through.

There are 'good' films (which can be remade) and then there are 'classic' films (which shouldn't be remade).

Such as (to name just a few):
Gone With The Wind
Casablanca
The Wizard of Oz
The Godfather

Funny you should say the Wizard of Oz... since it was actually a remake and has been remade as The Wiz.

Re: The Godfather REMAKE!!! - 04/12/06 07:17 PM

You've got a point, DBC...allow me to clarify.

Silent movies don't count, and adaptations BASED on Broadway Productions BASED upon the original story don't count either.

I meant The Wizard of Oz, MGM production starting Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Frank Morgan, directed by Victor Flemming and produced by Mervyn LeRoy in 1939, the CLASSIC and one & only memorable version, to which all others are compared.

Incedentally, since you brought it up...'The Wiz' is concrete proof that some classics should not be remade.
I saw the play and it was very good. I saw the movie and it was not very good.

Thanks for the opportunity, DeathByClotheshanger.

As I pondered in another thread, it'll sadly and probably happen. Either as an outright movie or a "TNT Original" miniseries.

To add to the infamita, they'll also give the job to Chris Columbus or Michael Bay or even Peter Jackson (who'll be ready with a CGI Khartoum).

I don't know what it is, but I would be there on opening day -- probably take the day off from work -- to see a remake of The Godfather.

I do hate the idea of a remake, especially when the original hasn't aged or isn't dated one bit.

But I welcome the chance to see more of The Godfather, no matter what shape or form it may be in.

I just love these movies so much... and I am always wanting more.

Another thing, I don't want the GF to be glamorized like everything else in today's media. The GF is a great legend, something that should be referred to, but not the way the media does it. Kinda like the Holy Bible.
I hope the day never comes when they remake The Godfather.

Actors whoressemble them could play a younger version of the characters in flashbacks in GF IV, but they could never replace the originals.
And who should direct it? Scorsese, Sergio Leone (is he still alive), ... ??

My first thought is to agree with this post. I would rather a GF4 than a remake of GF1 and GF2. What would be gained? Other than drawing in the current generation in the GF Geek Zone and $$$

GF1 and 2 just worked... timing and everything... even if you could make a better remake... no one would believe it to be... IMO

I think GF4 should be shot in a GF2 type style.. flashbacks with Vincent and Sonny and other things(like it or not Vincent is Sonny's boy) and NOW a Corleone. I think Anthony should ride a similar parallet to Michael. He didnt want part of family biz and now he has to... why? I dunno... to save family like Michael did... by whatever story is chosen... maybe Anthony vs. Vincent(like Anakin vs. Kenobi) LOL

Just my passing thoughts

WOW!
that would be a great sequel and a great conclusion!
The story of GF IV should end with the final battle between Anthony and Vincet!
they must fight with the Lightsaber!
