if there are any idiots in this world actually working on something "serious" for another GF installment, it's surely not Robert DeNiro, FF Coppola, Andy Garcia or all them other movie-related figures... just a couple of publishers who wanted some publicity a couple of weeks ago...

I think I have to sadly agree with you , but maybe it´s not that bad, it probably woulden´t have worked anyway.

Re: Anything New with GF4? - 12/15/02 05:54 PM

why sadly?

with all the sequel hypes going on in movieland these years (I have called the new millenium the "Century of Sequels" before) people seem to forget that sequels usualy aren't as good as their originals.

there are some exceptions, yes. some sequels came close to their originals... Godfather 2... Batman Returns ... Home Alone 2 and I'll bet they didn't make all them Back to the Future/Star Wars/Indiana Jones/Rocky/Rambo/Lethal Weapon/Die Hard/James Bond sequels for nothing either, right?

with all the rumours (and confirmations even) of a Indiana Jones 4, Alien 5, Rocky 6, Halloween 15, Friday the 13th part 33, Die Hard 4, Star Wars a whole new trilogy, it seems to be a trend to relaunch movie franchises (new Superman and Batman series and even a Batman vs Superman film).

the 1969 classic "Easy Rider" is getting a sequel! some 1930's and 1940's movies are planning to be sequeled. that's not a remake, no, a SEQUEL!

and of course, The Godfather can't stay behind.

think of it, are you realy waiting for it to happen? a GF4? these movies weren't commercial tentpoles you know, the Godfather is not a cash cow you can squeeze until it's all dry and empty, like Die Hard 4, Lethal Weapon 5 and Indiana Jones 4 probably WILL satisfy. we're talking about realy Good movies here. Part III was on the edge, but already much less good as the first two. I guess a GF3 should have been made in 1978 or something to be satisfying enough (it probably would have had Robert Duvall in it)...

with all the sequels coming up, we might think we're going to be treated a lot the next years, but those movies are either commercial projects or going to be dissapointing.

Forrest Gump 2, Gladiator 2.... look what happened to Silence of the Lambs! now that movie still rocks. it wasn't a series before Hannibal and Red Dragon. Those two movies made a fortune for the studio, but what did it contribute to original film in quality terms of speaking? you think the members of the "Hannibal Lecter Bulletin Board" are as happy with the sequel and prequel as they were with Silence?

I think WE, the true fans, are better off without any new Godfather movie. no GF4, no GF5 no GF6... no David Chase, no Nicholas Pileggi, no Martin Scorsese... no Sofia Coppola, no Andy Garcia. we already have a brilliant trilogy. let them please keep it that way.

I think a Part IV only should be made if they had: the perfect cast, music, directer. But that´s never gonna happen. We don´t NEED a Part IV.

They all should have been made in the 70's early 80's it would have been way better

No, they should have completely stopped after Number 2.

They should have stopped after 2 I agree completely with this!!

3 is a money making parody of the story and didnt need to have been made.

Another GF story should stand alone on it's own merits, maybe using the same family name and/or credentials but other than that be totally individual of the GF and the GF2 (if this make sense!!) IE not a GF 4/5/6 blah blah blah

For Part 3, what they should have done was base it on the missing years between 1927 and 1945. IMO, i think it's kinda ridiculous that they had to create new characters like Vinnie and Hagen's son. We were never told in Part 1 that Lucy got pregnant, and it was never mentioned in the novel. I understand that some new characters were needed for Part 2; i.e. Pentangeli was a substitute for Clemenza, and both Roth and Ola supplemented the story. There was no need to know what happened to Michael and his family by the end of the 70s. We all knew that Michael lost his soul by the end of GF2. So that should have been the end. There's enough material from the novel to cover those missing years. Had FFC went for the missing years to create GF3 instead of jumping to the late 70s, he would have definitely completed the Saga, and all of us would have been alot happier. And there would be no need for GF4. This would have been a better Trilogy than the one we have right now.

You sound like a real bookworm, like I am, no movie could compare to book form, I can't think of any examples of movies better than their original novels. Movies popularize the novels though. Few people take the time to read an entire novel. Movies can breathe life into a novel; the challenge of maintaining this depth of experience throughout an entire film is the directors. Movies are still a budding art.
Part III dosen't take you in the direction you want just for fun. Its the fall of the 'Roman Empire', conventinal morality as we know it. Happiness is the elusive object, the Corleones have the money when will they get the respect? Why are they driven to seek more power when the power they have has cost them so much already? Why did Don Vito order the hit on Woltz with such magnamity? The one guy popular enough for it to back fire. Did Don Vito know word would get out?
Is the Godfather about being the toughest, the richest, or the smartest? Or, beter yet the most moral, from which these other things may be included. What price did Don Vito know he would pay in is struggle for justice. It must of felt good to stick that knife into Don Ciccio, finally the man he saw murder his own mother. The story is a soap opera functioning on a literal reality plane.

Michael hasn't achieved hero status like Vito had. This is the part of Vito's life we do not see. The rise of Vito between killing Fanucci and then Don Ciccio, and his rise to the level of power that 'The Godfather' takes him. Micheal has'nt lost his soul in part II, but he is afraid he might "lose his family" (conversation with his Mother). Godfather III only fails in the sense that Vito failed to integrate his power with everyone else. In the GF we come in as a witness to the price of power, crime power, patriarchal power that Micheal can only reclaim in a GF IV. GF I, II, III all end calling for a sequel, so many unresolved conflicts. It blows me away that people can't see the need for closure within the series. Robert DeNiro could get another excellent role in Part IV playing Vito as he builds from a neighbourhood boss to an international boss, running molasses into Canada with Roth etc... He could play some more of this 30's storyline integrated into flashbacks in my GF IV script http://www.thegodfathertrilogy.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=12;t=000090

Truest thing i've ever read about GF3!

Read Peter Boskind's Godfather Companion (local Lbrary, if you cant find it), and read Puzo's Gf3 Summaries and you'll be begging to go back to 1978 and talk Puzo into making a 3rd Movie!

I herd that by nov 4th they would have a storyline picked and then they would worry about who the author was gonna be ,, but mayb they have a story line and arent letting the media no what the storyline is untill they have an author.im most likely wrong but hey i like to hope what can i say.

Godfather 4 - nah! It won't be nearly as good as 1 or 2.

1 or 2 smashed it - they were the best - perfect.

Godfather 3 was rushed - random - it was filmed out of pressure not lust for the movie name.

the godfather should only be 1 and 2 and these two films will remain the best.

I admire the arrogance passion and lust for the mafia in 1 and 2. Number 3 was too business sided and uncalled for. Sorry if anyone disagrees with me.

I'd love to hear what everyone else has to say.

In the meanwhile Happy New Year - I hope you have a wonderful 2003 and may you get all you aspire for.

Don Sunny.

listen to all of you....you complain about sequels while touting Godafther and Godfather II, and in some cases the whole trilogy....if there were no sequels you would've never seen part II....so, let's not be hypocrites.....instead, let's be skeptical, and let's admit we have no control over what the publishers and studios put out....and then let's read it, or see it, and if we love it, we'll be happy, and if we don't we'll never forgive them....

True. That doesn't mean writers and fans shouldn't fight to maintain the integrity of a writer's work. As far as I'm concerned, there should be no more Godfather novels or movies without Puzo. Making a sequel now, whether novel or movie, would be like necrophilia, like trying to squeeze every last penny out of Puzo's legacy. I was hoping Santa would leave a lump of coal (or a horse's head) in Paramount chief Sherry Lansing's stocking. As fans, we can voice our displeasure by refusing to spend our money on a GF sequel.
