Quickest rise from soldier to boss?

Quickest rise from soldier to boss? - 04/17/24 03:34 AM

Is there an official consensus for who had the quickest rise from being made to becoming a boss/acting boss or on a ruling panel. I want to rule out both John Gotti Sr. and Jr. since their rises were unnatural (with Sr forcing his way into the position and Jr only becoming boss due to nepotism). Other than those 2 the best contender I could find is Al D’Arco being made in 82 and becoming acting boss by 1991.

Is there anyone with a shorter rise to the top spot that didn’t involve nepotism or violent takeovers?

I thought maybe Vincent Basciano since I couldn’t find a consensus on when he was made

Ralph Natale was made and a minute later he was appointed Boss.

Capone was made sometime around 1928/29 and was instantly bumped to the capo position and in 1931 he became boss of the Chicago family.

Natale is probably the best example of such an occurrence. His elevation was simultaneous to his induction.

liborio bellomo, not his elevation to boss. bellomo was put into a street boss/acting boss position in 1990??? i think. he hadnt been made too long at that point and im not sure if he was a capo yet, maybe acting. to be put in the admin of the genovese in any role that early shows that gigante et al saw the leadership abilities and respect bellomo had even back then.

I wasn’t sure to include him since it was kind of a phony position set up by Merlino, In an interview he claimed to have been made sometime before the books opened under Bruno but I guess that could just be him telling one of his many tall tales on YouTube since I’m pretty sure he also said it was a “secret ceremony” or some nonsense

Gotti was said to be acting as a captain before he was even made, then 8 years later he was boss.

Sal Montagna was made in the late 1990s became Acting Captain in the early 2000s and by the late 2000s was Acting Boss of the Bonanno Family. Matty Madonna was made in the late 1990s or 2001 and theb promotes to Captain and then Acting Boss of the Lucchese Family by the late 2000s. John Spirito Jr was made sometime around 2009 and then by 2014 held some sort of admin position before being shelved.

Wasn't phony Ralph Natale was the recognized Official Boss of Philadelphia. His claim of being made by Angelo Bruno and Carlo Gambino is a complete lie.

John Gotti wasn't a Acting Capo before being made. That's not possible.

I am not sure about Gotti being an acting captain, it has been said that he was acting captain of the Bergin crew before being made. It may be wrong info, but it is out there. He did become boss quickly, probably too quickly in his case.

Re: Quickest rise from soldier to boss? - 04/17/24 03:55 PM

I doubt that Natale was the real boss. Merlino was made in the 1992 and after Stanfa went to jail in the middle 1990s he was the real Philadelphia Mafia Boss. For the 5 family Amuso and Gotti was made in the same times (1977) so less ten to soldier to boss.
Patriarca jr was also made in the late 1970s (1978 if I well remember) so 6 years.

Im sure there were plenty of guys made after the books reopened that already held considerable power. Guys like frank decicco must have been all but made long before it physically happened

I was always under the assumption that he became boss after Torrio was shot in 1925, just that he was still fighting wars with other Italian gangs at the time so there wasn’t an official boss of the whole city yet. So did Torrio remain boss until the late 20s just more in the shadows?

Re: Quickest rise from soldier to boss? - 04/17/24 08:05 PM

John torrio and Al Capone were Camorra members and that's the organization they were Boss of in the 1920s. Al Capone didn't become a LCN member until 1928 when he joined the Genovese Family and became a Captain. Al Capone transferred to the Chicago Family sometime later and became the Boss in 1931.

Yes, I also thought Capone took over when Torrio "retired" to Italy in 1925 after he was nearly killed by Weiss's gang and served several months in jail on a booze rap. Also, was Capone actually "made"?

He was the actual boss for some time. It wasn't phony. Sure, Merlino had a lot of power and was running things on a day to day basis but Natale was the official Boss and was making decisions too.

But yeah, he claimed that he was previously made in a secret ceremony by none other than Carlo Gambino and Angelo Bruno. That's ridiculous and nobody believed him. That's why Joey Merlino made sure Natale was properly inducted before being named boss because he knew the story was bullshit and the other families would make it an issue that the Philly Boss wasn't even made.

I emailed Mario Gomes of the My Al Capone Museum who is very knowledgeable about Capone minutae. I posted his response below.
Michael Franzese became an associate in 1971, a made man in 1975 and a caporegime in 1980. That's has to be the record.

I'm not familiar with Mr Gomes but I have a serious reservations of anyone calling themselves a Capone researcher but questions Al Capone's status in LCN or his opinion on being apart of the organization. We have 3 made members confirming his membership. We know prior to being made he had been involved with LCN for over a decade. Al Capone already being the leader of his Camorra organization means nothing to cast doubt on his opinion on joining La Cosa Nostra. We have several examples of others leading their own criminal organizations and joining and even holding leadership positions in LCN. No one ever questions their legitimacy as LCN members or their opinions on joining the organization but for some reason when it comes to Chicago people create these preconceived notions that keep getting repeated over and over again.

I did just scroll through a bunch of it and it's quite the collection of info he has. But I'm not very impressed with some of what I read. He dismisses insider accounts because he doesn't agree with it and he states his own theories without evidence to support it.

Re: Quickest rise from soldier to boss? - 04/18/24 01:55 AM

I'm not sure which insider accounts he dismissed, unless you're referring to the Nick Gentile claim he cites early on in his response. Why don't you reach out to him with your assertions and see how he responds, he's very nice. You might not want to tell him it's part of thread on here. He stopped responding after I told him I was posting his response here, previously. I think he may be a member here.

Re: Quickest rise from soldier to boss? - 04/18/24 02:58 AM

Lol Yeah should ask before sharing private correspondence with another person or group.

But yes Nicola Gentile is one he dismissed and you can tell his opinion of his info by the way he described Nicola Gentile. For the others dismiss may have been the wrong word he ignored Augie Maniaci and Joe Bonanno identifying Al Capone as a member. It's just preposterous to question Al Capone's membership.

But to get back on track of the original topic of this post yes Al Capone would be one of the fastest risers in LCN.

Capone was 27 in 1925, when Torrio "retired." Bonanno was 26 in 1931 when he became boss after the Castellemmarrese War.
