But yet there's this: "They got help from a third party, who warned the restaurateur the very next day that Celso wanted him to recant his police report — which the victim did, the feds allege. The debt was later paid in full."

Plus it sounds like it's just a good defense strategy to make it look like it had nothing to do with extortion but with racist slurs.

That is the first time I have seen the video, he hardly touched him! His punch was weak, as you would expect from an 80year old man hitting anyone, and the guy hit was way bigger. There was barley any contact. As they wasted everyone's time with this trail, a crowd was gathering to riot not far away, where Muslims tried to stop the annual Christmas Tree lighting. That "Punch" was more of a light poke to the chin. What a farce of a trail.

Great points Jace. He's fucking 80 and it shows, you think he's gonna hit like a lumberjack?

He wasn't scared of this old man, the thing is that he has no idea who that old man has behind him. Celso was acquitted of murder in 1993, when the main witness skipped the country. Things like that enhances criminal reputations. Things like that make people pay up.

Who was the big dude at the bar that got up ready to rock and roll after putting the rubber band around his roll of cash?

And yet he testified against him without going into witness protection.

All you gotta do these days, is tell wiseguys you're on camera, and they run.

Try killing a witness in 2023 and see what happens, they will be all locked up in 24 hours.

Never say never. "These days" is said a lot, but I'm sure there were similar cases in the 90s too. The problem is that no one wants to do time anymore. When was it when they tried to kill Curtis Sliwa? Practically in a pretty public fashion. But the mob had people who were really about that life then. I can't see today's wiseguys doing that. Society at large is soft. Everything's soft, not just the mob. Even the military has gone soft. Drill sergeants used to be able to rough you up and curse you out, now basic training has stress cards.

He still paid up though, and let's just be honest here, these guys will likely walk away with slaps on the wrist. Romanello will probably die in prison, but not because he got any serious time, but because he's already old as fuck.

Sliwa hit was 33 years ago, I'll go ahead and say never, things have not gone soft here in NYC, not a day goes by without a shooting, stabbing.

Re: Nobody respects the washed up wiseguys anymore - 11/30/23 08:33 PM

On one hand people say that the mob doesn't go after witnesses because they don't want to compromise rackets, on the other hand people say that the rackets are all dried out. Things aren't adding up. If the rackets are dead anyway, what do they have to lose going after witnesses? If I were in the mob and there was nothing to lose, fuck it I'd take my chances lol.

Those shootings and stabbings you're talking about are likely done by everyday common lowlifes that law enforcement could give two fucks about because they don't make headlines or advance careers.

I have no idea what you are saying, i am saying no one is stupid enough to kill a witness in 2023, you are literally shooting yourself in the leg, you and your whole crew would be locked up in 24 hours and it will bring insane amount of heat on whole family.

Re: Nobody respects the washed up wiseguys anymore - 11/30/23 08:51 PM

If, and it's a big IF, they wanted to do something about it they'd wait a few years until the heat dies down. The boss is supposed to sign off on these matters, I just don't see the current alleged boss being that stupid. These guys will be back on the streets in no time.

Nobody respects them until some octogenarian (asaro) orders some kid to burn your car out over some road rage minor incident lol

This stuff always happened also in the 80s/90s, some people got a seriously short fuse lol..

True H - and will be the same moving forward. We talk about “who’s left” but there’s always a large pool in NY left as well as other high concentrated Italian American cities. A pool that the elders can use at their wish.

Seriously though, is the mob so deprived of manpower that their elderly have to go and do debt collections?

He knew the guy and must have figured it would go smoothly. Instead the restaurant owner acted like a tough guy, talked nasty to him, and called the cops over a poke to the face.

That pool is long gone, an area that is slightly Italian now is called an Italian area.
