Al Pacino & Goodfellas - 03/05/23 03:50 AM

So is there a specific reason as to why Pacino wasnt casted in Goodfellas along with Liotta, Pesci, Sorvino, Deniro, Sirico.

Yes. He was offered DeNiro’s role originally but turned it down because he was working on Dick Tracy.

I can't imagine Al Pacino playing that character. Obviously now because it's already been done, DeNiro's performance is etched in stone, but still.

1000%!

I love Pacino, I really do. But, for me at least, NOBODY beats DeNiro! He plays a "wsieguy" better than anybody I've ever seen on celluloid. Hands down.

Truth, though I wonder if Al kicked himself. Dick Tracy in my opinion was largely forgettable. DeNiro owned the role perfectly.

Pacino would have played the role of the cocaine dealer mobster from Pittsburgh very well. That would have been a great little role for him with his connection to Scarface.

Is that actually true? Because DeNiro looked as much like Jimmy as Al did Lefty. Cannot see either playing the other role. I also can't imagine that DeNiro wasn't involved in the pre-production of Goodfellas from the very inception of the thing and the only person in mind for the role with his close association with Scorsese and Pillegi.

I would have liked to see a Gene Hackamn or Duvall play the part, or even a lesser known but solid actor like Robert Davi. DeNro plays the same part over and over. His character from Heat and Goodfella were almost identical the way he played them.

Too bad none of these guys are anything like they are in the movies. Pacino is an old hippie. Deniro Is a liberal moron.

i think Duvall would have been great. The right rug,and some make-up,maybe even a prosthetic piece, and he would have nailed it.

.
. Pacino I can handle. DeNiro has been a big disappointment on a human level. It’s funny fir years you would rarely see him do interviews and if he did you’d be lucky to get 10 words out of him. Now that he has become more vocal over the past decade or so I see why I liked him better when he kept quiet lol

It’s really depressing when you see these guys in movies and you’re like man I’d love to hang out with that guy and have a beer with him. Then when you see him in real life and how they act and things they talk about you go “on second thought no fucking way.”

. Absolutely. Just remember at the end of the day they’re only actors. Sure they make more money but that doesn’t mean they know more than you even if they think that. There are plenty of actors out there who are pretty cool. Robert Davi is one of them. I understand he doesn’t have the accolades Pacino and Deniro do but the guy is a hell of an actor/singer with a impressive resume and cool guy

I never knew of Pacino getting involved regarding Trump, Pacino never speaks of politics. Where did you see him comment on Trump?

Well, sure--when an actor gives an iconic performance in a great movie, as did DeNiro in "Goodfellas," it's really hard to envision anyone else in that role. Could anyone envision someone other than Charlton Heston as Moses in "The Ten Commandments"? Still, I think Pacino had the acting chops to bring off Jimmy if he'd taken the role instead of DeNiro.

Here's a story from "The Godfather":

I bought the three-VHS, "25th Anniversary" set of the GF Trilogy when it was released. Each movie began with commentary from one of the principals. "The Godfather" tape had Mario Puzo in a deadpan narrative. He said that, when Paramount announced it would film his novel, he heard that Danny Thomas (!) planned to buy Paramount so he could play Vito Corleone (!!!). "I was a little disturbed by that," Puzo deadpanned. He said that his agent had Brando's mailing address, so he sent Brando a script and asked if he'd be interested in playing Vito. Brando wrote back that he'd be interested but needed to see who'd be selected as director.

I never saw or heard that story anywhere else.

Al Pacino is one of the greatest actors of all time. He can pull off anything (even his more questionable roles like that one where he played the devil), so I agree with you he could've pulled it off. Danny Thomas as Vito Corleone??? That would totally never work no matter how hard he tried. IMO

BTW, I think I have that set in DVD format (maybe a later release?) and never watched it. Going to have to pull out the DVD player.

DeNiro and Pacino...two of the very best gangster actors out there, IMO. Nobody does it better. Nobody!

De Niro is the best when it comes to playing wiseguys. His politics don't bother me and I LOVE Trump. People are so triggered on the right that I'm reminded of the left. As long as De Niro plays gangsters I'm good with him
