Very interesting CW. Do you have a list of those N'drangheta members indicted? I'd be interested to review the surnames of those picked up in the probe. $44,000,000 dollars confiscated? Thats a lot of money by anybody's measuring stick.

Yes I believe so they have still contacts with their relatives in Calabria in particular the Plati families. Many visits back and forth.

Re: Ndrangheta/Mafia in Australia - 04/25/23 12:59 AM

The Australian arm of the mafia has a new Melbourne-based Godfather in the biggest change to the “Honoured Society” in decades.

The Herald Sun can reveal the new top man, chosen by a “commission”, was appointed following a series of meetings held in Perth where families with ties to Calabria reside.

He is said to have ties to a major soccer club.

As the new boss, the convicted criminal replaces a well-known Melbourne fruit and vegetable businessman as the head of the Calabrian mafia, also known as the “Ndrangheta”.

The retiring boss, who has no criminal record, has been considered Australia’s Italian organised crime “Godfather” since the 1990s.

It is also believed his son has been installed as deputy leader.

Unlike previous eras, the changeover has been negotiated without bloodshed.

The incoming mob boss has been close to the “Godfather” since the 1980s.

It also brings together two families at the top of the Victorian hierarchy who have long worked together to increase the mafia’s influence.

The outgoing Godfather made it to the top in a bloody era in which some of the key opposition candidates were murdered.

The new man appears to have made his way there, in part, through his ability to manage relationships with key families.

It is not known whether Victoria Police’s anti-gang squad, which has a team scrutinising the activities of the mafia, is aware of the recent leadership change.

But a 2015 Victoria Police intelligence report noted the planned leadership change.

The new boss, who the Herald Sun cannot legally name, is known to both state and federal police and was embroiled in the 2008 Operation Inca sting. His extended family has links to a fresh fruit business and a major sporting club.

But, after spending four years in prison, the 55-year-old now controls an organised crime syndicate with a history in Australia dating back to 1922.

“Changes in the Australian ’Ndrangheta are expected at intergenerational turns,” Italian mafia academic Professor Anna Sergi said. “In fact, we can expect different rules of succession to apply to Australia than they would apply to the organisation elsewhere.”

A restructuring of Australia’s ’Ndrangheta cells comes in the wake of the AFP-led worldwide AN0M sting, which recorded communications over years between organised crime figures.

Through AN0M – an encrypted app – the AFP and FBI gained a rare insight into the mafia and the scale of transnational criminal activity.

It unveiled how massive illicit drug importations were organised or aided through mafia figures and associates, the size of the profits and how often the mafia “worked” with outlaw motorcycle gangs.

The AFP’s Operation Ironside was then launched to cripple the networks suspected to be importing tonnes of cocaine and methamphetamine into Australia.

Profits from illicit drugs are laundered through legitimate companies or sent offshore.

The AFP last year said its intelligence indicated there were 51 Italian organised crime clans operating in Australia — 14 of them ’Ndrangheta clans, with thousands of members.

Like elsewhere in the world, the clans are tied by blood lines.

Some of these Australian families have relatives in Italy and the AFP’s intelligence suggests some members take orders from mob bosses in Calabria.

The existence of the mafia is denied by members who obey a code of silence, known as “omerta”.

Cracking the mafia’s activities in Australia has historically been considered too difficult and experts believe the seriousness of its threat to Australia has historically been underestimated.

It is now estimated the ’Ndrangheta controls 80 per cent of the world’s cocaine trade.

Yes I'm not 100% sure but most likely. The extended family are a 'ndrina of the 'Ndrangheta originally from Platì and active at least since the 1920s. They have also been active in Northern Italy.

An Italian parliamentary anti-mafia commission said in 2008 that the 'Ndrangheta handled up to 80 percent of the cocaine shipments to Europe and the media is still mentioning that number.

I don't believed it at the time and we are now in 2023.

I predicted 2024 would be an interesting year.

In 2005, John donated to the Liberal Party as part of a suspected plot to get a visa for crime figure Francesco Madafferi, who is currently serving a jail sentence for one of the biggest ecstasy busts.
And the best man at his wedding was mafia figure Alfonso Muratore, who was also murdered in a gangland hit.
Latorre's fruit and vegetable wholesaler is a family affair, co-owned by John and his brother in law.
The business remained closed today, with relatives gathering at the family home to pay their respects.
There are now fears of possible revenge attacks leading to a new underworld war. ?

Greenvale shooting: FIFO assassin suspected of killing Melbourne greengrocer John Latorre on Mafia orders
Hunt to find greengrocer's killer continues
Sources claim John Latorre gunned down by FIFO assassin

By KYLIE STEVENS FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA

PUBLISHED: 22:11 GMT, 17 March 2024 | UPDATED: 10:08 GMT, 18 March 2024

A fly-in, fly-out assassin is suspected to have jetted in from overseas on a Mafia-sanctioned mission to kill a successful greengrocer in a brutal gangland execution.

John Latorre, 64, was gunned down outside his Greenvale home in Melbourne's north as he headed to work early last Tuesday morning.

His family were woken by the gunshots and found his body lying in the driveway. Almost one week later, Mr Latorre's killer still remains at large.

Underworld sources believe the execution was so well planned they believe it had to be '100 per cent' endorsed by the highest levels of mafia leadership.

Mr Latorre is understood to have been a discreet but influential member of the 'Ndrangheta - a powerful Mafia organisation from Calabria, southern Italy.

'This was smooth … cool, calm and calculating,' a source told the Herald Sun.

'This is a professional job. There's not that many people able to pull that off.

'They wouldn't have done it without assurances. It's a big job.'

The source added that many didn't see Mr Latorre's killing coming which he described as a 'huge shock'.

He added that the possibility of retaliatory attacks was unlikely.

Another theory circulating in the underworld is that a bungled 2020 'black flight' cocaine importation bound for Queensland could be a factor behind the murder.

An overloaded Cessna packed with $80million of the drug crashed after takeoff from Papua New Guinea.

Mr Latorre was suspected of playing a key role in the botched importation which left investors with heavy losses.

He was known to visit friend and international drug trafficker Frank Madafferi but did not have a major criminal record.

Mr Latorre was shot multiple times in the driveway of his Buchanan Place home around 4.30am last Tuesday.

He had been heading to work at Melbourne Market in Epping, where he ran a successful fruit and vegetable business.

A source close to Mr Latorre said he had felt no threat on his life prior to his death.

'There was no indication of any threats to his life,' they said last week.

Homicide detectives are still investigating whether the shooting was linked to organised crime.

'There's nothing to suggest retaliation at this point in time,' Detective Senior Sergeant Danny Travaglini told reporters last Tuesday.

'However, you've also got to understand, that if there are links to organised crime, there is the potential for retaliation.'

Homicide detectives have collected CCTV and have narrowed down their investigations to a four-hour window between 2am and 6am in their hunt to track down Mr Latorre's killer.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

HIGH VOLTAGE
'Ndrangheta in Australia and the fear of a new "war": a murder and two restaurants on fire in Melbourne
On the night of April 30, two rooms were set on fire in just a few minutes. In March, however, the ambush against Latorre. In the background "well-known" Calabrian families and common origins

It is still early to define the contours, investigators, as often happens in these latitudes, prefer caution, but what happened in the north-west of Melbourne on the night of 30 April raised more than one alarm bell. And it couldn't be otherwise considering the episodes that were at least unusual: two restaurants set on fire, one just a few minutes apart. The first to catch fire was “La Porchetta” around 2.30 am. The second, however, was the “Negroni 888” .

The restaurant "La Porchetta", for example, is part of a chain born from the entrepreneurial idea of ??the Calabrian Rocco "Rocky" Pantaleo, who died in 2010 in a car accident. As reported by the local press, Pantaleo began his business in the second half of the '80s together with Felice Nania, investing in a place called "La Porchetta", transforming it in a few years into a real chain of franchised places. The news of recent years, as well as the investigative activities, link the brand to that of another family of Calabrian origins - from Messignadi, a hamlet of Oppido Mamertina - who since 2010, through a subsidiary company, have purchased some company shares .
