Sorry for the misunderstanding. The Godfather is by far,the greatest Mob movie ever, hands down,no contest. The original post asked if we had another choice that ranked among the other movies listed.
Given some of the picks (Angels with Dirty Faces,Little Caesar, etc),I was just throwing in another title that I thought was on a par with the others.

Re: What was the greatest mob movie of all time? - 04/17/22 05:50 AM

I'll add:
"Al Capone," basically a B-movie but with an electrifying performance by Rod Steiger in the title role. He was hands-down the best of all the movie Capones and Capone-like characters.
"The Brotherhood," a much-underrated Mob movie with Kirk Douglas very good as an old-fashioned Sicilian-American Don struggling--fatally--with the modern Mob and his own wannabe younger brother
"Honor thy Father," a TV movie based on the Gay Talese book about Bill Bonanno and faher Joe, with four memorable performances by Joseph Bologna, Brenda Vaccaro, Raf Vallone and Richard Castellano. The script mercifully omits all the "man of honor" BS that Bill Bonanno loaded on Talese in the book.

Though it is not a Mob movie per se, "White Heat" is the greatest gangster movie ever made. James Cagney at his most forceful as Cody Jared, psychopatic killer and leader of a gang of payroll robbers.

Arguably, while it may not be "the greatest," I always have a soft spot for Scorsese's Mean Streets.

For me, it's sorta the Anti-Godfather. Keitel was the star, but DeNiro steals the film.

And the fight in the pool hall is a classic. ("What's a mook?")

Bravo! Turnbull.....I forgot about all those classics when making this list. Rod Steiger played the part very well although as you say the movie Al Capone itself wasn't a great work. "The Brotherhood" with Kirk Douglas was a great movie. I saw it as a teenager when it was first released back in the 1960s (68' I think). Loved it.

Telese's "Honor Thy Father" was not great IMO but a major mob movie and worth watching nonetheless. And yes, "White Heat" w/Cagney was great. Where he screams out at the end, "Top of the world Ma, Top of the World" Lol (also the part where he puts the guy in the trunk and then plugs the trunk full of holes). Lol

Thank you for those. Good additions for sure!

BINGO!!! A great movie. Simply great! I remember my friends and I took the subway to 42nd Street in Manhattan to see it as soon as it came out. All the guys were saying how this was so realistic and a real depiction of our neighborhoods. (and it was). Very gritty and real. No fluff. No BS. No Hollywood schtick. Just the real deal. They even had a few neighborhood guys actually cast in the movie. When we watched it we were crying laughing because they had these average guys from Mulberry Street neighborhood in it. Lol. That was all Scorsese, because he actually came from Downtown New York.

I don't know how I forgot that one (I must be getting old) Lol. So a great addition! Bravo!

"Mean Streets" is a must see for everyone! It was made around 1972-73 if memory serves me.

Re: What was the greatest mob movie of all time? - 04/17/22 11:31 AM

A lot of "mob" movies aren't really mob movies at all, many just have a sort of mob theme or "feel" about them. A movie with just one or two mob guys or connected guys throughout the film doesn't qualify as a mob movie. But sure, I suppose they could be added to the genre.

Re: What was the greatest mob movie of all time? - 04/17/22 02:26 PM

I do rate the gravano film " witness to the mob".
Goodfellas is the best, though. It's more realistic of mob life than the godfathers. Shows how lowlife a lot of the mob really is. Whereas the godfathers makes it seem glamorous and noble, in parts.
Little Caesar is best of old ones.

To me Goodfellas is more low-level mob stuff, street-level rackets. I mean most people in the movie weren't in the Mafia, fringe associates. It didn't show the true business of Cosa Nostra, infiltrating different industries and taking over labor unions. The robbery, hijacking, and insurance fraud shit is associate stuff, soldier at best. I think it's a great movie if you want to see what mob life is at a street level.

Donnie Braco

Re: What was the greatest mob movie of all time? - 04/18/22 02:45 PM

Godfather 1, number Godfather 2 is good, but not as great as the first. Many 1930's movies were great, like the ones with Bogart, Garfield, and Cagney. There is an old interview with Scorsese, where he states that Mean Streets, while it has a hint of mob elements to it, is actually a character study of different types of neighborhood people he grew up with.

1.) Goodfellas
2.)Godfather
3.) Godfater II
4.) Casino
5.) Gotti (HBO 1996 version)
6.) Donnie Brasco
7.) Bronx Tale
8.) Mean Streets
9.) Pope of Greenwich Village
10.) The Irishman (aware its highly inaccurate, but if you can look past that i thought the story was good)

Not sure if you can count Raging Bull as its not necessarily a mob movie, but there's certainly a mob aspect. If that counts, I'd put that top 5.

Most mob movies suck in my opinion, even the good ones hardly hit their mark, especially when compared to the books they're based on. Almost every time I watch one I feel like something's missing or it could've been better.

Forrest Whiticker made a strange movie called Ghost Dog, about a Black man he plays who hangs out in Philly, and gets involved with a Mafia member. Very wierd movie, but I liked it The Mafia men are portrayed a bit bizarrely. Henry Silva plays the mob boss.

The trailer:

Re: What was the greatest mob movie of all time? - 04/20/22 04:53 PM

I need to add that Ghost Dog is not one of the best, not by far. It's just pretty good, and very different. It came to my attention when I was a passenger in a car, and the driver had talk radio host Michael Savage on. Savage was going on about how much he liked it, and saying it was so strange, weird, and bizarre, yet he could not stop watching it. I checked it out afterwards, and felt the same. One portrayal was what I think was an underbosss, who was a rap fan and was rapping in a mob club while siting at a table with his boss.

It was a lot of things. A biography "first and foremost" about an Italian guy from the Bronx who became an iconic boxer. But it was also about the Italian culture, the Bronx, gritty street life, the Mafia, criminality, his violent relationship with his girl and wife, his alcohol abuse, his later life after the ring, his nightclub career as a club comedian, etc., etc....But never mind all that Jace. You just keep saying "it was a boxing movie," like the stubborn, ignorant, argumentative blockhead that you have been since you came to this forum. Lol. You can't help yourself because you just love to cause trouble.

PS: By the way we just released an interesting profile on top Baltimore mafia figure Thomas (Guinea Reds) Aversa. You'll enjoy it...(oh, I forgot. You can't read it).

This just aired on TCM a few days ago. Great film because of Steiger, but I had totally forgot that the female lead was played by the late Fay Spain - a very underrated actress whose last film role was as Hyman Roth's wife in GF2 (and you didn't even get to see any close-ups of her face).

Okay got few gems that are must watch if you like mob movies….

WITNESS TO THE MOB is almost my all time favs . It’s The movie version to UNDERBOSS.

One deadly road. - this also was a favorite but haven’t seen it in over 15 years bc my car was on AVE D in LES smh. It’s basically the CASSO story.

Bonanno : a godfathers story
There’s two versions of this…
One is called the youngest godfather which is three hours and only part one to the full movie.

Does anyone know what ITALIAN mafia movies on AMAZON PRIME are worth watching?? I like zero zero zero And I saw season 1 n 2 og gommoroa. Gammora series wasn’t my favorite but it was ok

Yes--"Mafioso" (1964), directed by Alberto Lattuada, is a great movie about a Sicilian (Alberto Sordi) who left the island for Milan, where he married a blond Northern Italian woman, has two blond daughters, and has a managerial job at the Fiat plant. He returns to Sicily to introduce his wife and kids to his family and friends. It's a riotously funny comedy about the clash of mores and customs twixt mainlanders and Sicilians--until he's recruited by the local gabellotto to do a job in New York. Brilliant!

Yeah, this was a really weird movie but with a good cast. Interesting how Christopher Walken started his movie career as a wimpy tech nerd in "The Anderson Tapes" and evolved into so many tough guy roles.

Just finished mafia inc.
Loosely based on events in MTL across the years.
Definitely not the "greatest" but as far as new mafia flicks in past couple decades very well done.
Judging by ending there should be a sequel.
And compared to tv show bad blood mafia inc is Shakespeare.
Bad blood was a tragedy on all fronts...I hope they don't plan a 3rd season.

I can't explain why I didn't post this when this thread started, but...

"Key Largo" (1948). Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) and his mob are holed up in a Florida Keys hotel, holding hostage the owner (Lionel Barrymore), his daughter (Lauren Bacall) and a visitor (Humphrey Bogart) during a hurricane. Claire Trevor, as Rocco's moll, won Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but Robinson, as usual, supplies the juice. Robinson in "Little Caesar" was a choir boy compared with his Johnny Rocco in "Key Largo," possibly the nastiest gangster ever. Robinson, IMO, the most underrated great actor in Hollywood history.

Gotta agree with you there. I loved Edward G. Robinson growing up. He was one of my all-time favorites.

Mean Streets isn't a mob movie, just has a few mobsters in it sprinkled here and there if I'm not mistaken.

Re: What was the greatest mob movie of all time? - 08/11/22 03:22 PM

To me Donnie Brasco is top-of-the-line, I think it was darker and nastier than Goodfellas and Casino because of the lack of narration and classic music, which seemed to lighten up those other movies and make them almost comical.

You're not mistaken, yet it is always referred to as one. At the time it came out no one saw it as a mob movie, but as a character study. The people in it were nuts, and Keitel's character did run numbers, but there was almost no mob references, aside from the uncle.

I like the Cagney ones but Bogart did a few good ones too. There was one with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster as bootlegger that was also pretty good. I think he Cagney ones were tops.

The Godfather is not only the greatest mob movie of all time, it's the greatest movie of all time.

Second greatest movie of all time is Part 2. Nothing beats the story, the detail, the pacing, the casting and the acting in both films.

I agree, on both fronts.

For all you trivia buffs:

First time that an original motion picture and it's sequel both won Best Picture Oscars - Godfather 1 & 2.

First time that 2 different actors won an Oscar fer portraying the same character - Godfather 1 - Brando (Best Actor) and Godfather 2 - DeNiro (Best supporting Actor) for Vito Corleone.

First time that an actor won an Oscar for speaking primarily in a foreign language (Sicilian dialect) Godfather 2 - DeNiro.for Vito Corleone

Not sure it was brought up, but what is everyone's thoughts on Once Upon A Time in America? I am NOT nominating it for best Mob movie by any means, I agree with the top choices, but I always found it entertaining.
Directed by Sergio Leone, his last movie, and starring De Niro and James Woods with Joe Pesci also.
And I know its not the "Italian Mafia"
It always made me think of Luciano, Lanskey, etc, young friends who grow up to be crime bosses.
Curious what everyone else thinks about that movie.

Re: What was the greatest mob movie of all time? - 08/16/22 06:02 PM

Yes, it was definitely loosely based on Luciano and his Jewish gangster pals, I don't care what anyone says.

Once Upon A Time in America is an excellent film.

I will split a semantic hair and say that while it may not be a "Mafia" movie, it certainly is an epic "Mob" movie.

Whoever found the kid that portrays James Woods as a teen was a casting genius.

Maybe it's my juvenile mindset, but one of my favorite scenes is where Burt Young is relating the story of his "special" insurance policy.

Sergio Leone was devastated when the Americans released the first version in theaters what were they thinking??
The director's cut is a masterpiece. It received a raucous, record-breaking ovation of nearly 20 minutes at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival (reportedly heard by diners at restaurants across the street from the Palais)
