Who was Vito Genovese's closest ally? - 06/29/21 05:32 PM

During his tenure as boss, who was Vito Genovese's closest ally in the other four NYC/NJ borgatas?

What bosses? And what other top players of the Bonanno, Gambino, Colombo, Lucchese, and DeCavalcante crews?

Tommy Lucchese had Carlo Gambino
Joe Profaci had Joe Bonanno
Nicky Delmore had Vito Genovese
Frank Costello had Albert Anastasia

But who did Vito have a top backup in another family?

Food for thought

If I recall correctly (book isn't in front of me), Joe Bonanno, in "A Man of Honor" [sic], said that Tommy Lucchese had conspired with Genovese to whack Albert A.

Hey NYM, I'm no professional on the board by any means, but the rumor mill from around 2000 to 2010 when I first read any OC research was that Joe Ida of Philadelphia was a very strong puppet of Genovese. Reason I tell you this is the rumor wasn't that he was an ally of Genovese, like Tommy/Carlo, Bonanno/Profaci, or Bonanno/Mangano, but a direct puppet.

Well if we're to use the "who benefited the most", I am the Walrus, etc, it would have to be Gambino. Tommy Brown always went along with him. I know there's no official boss of bosses but....come on. It was Lucky and Frank until 1957, then it was Carlo from 1957 till his death, then it was debatable between the Gambino's and The Genovese under Chin's rise to the top. After Gotti was out it was certainly Chin then Barney ever since. This is all speculation btw.

For some reason the Philly boss has always been an important piece for whoever was the most powerful family at the time. Ida-Genovese, then you have Bruno coming out of no where to be boss when Vito goes down and Carlo Gambino is the most powerful mob boss in the nation. A lot of guys in Philly back then say Bruno was given the position and had not done much to earn it. Then Testa for a minute and Scarfo were in direct contact with top guys on the west side. The Stanfa pulls a Bruno and is put in top spot by the gambinos and Joey plots away with Natale who claims to have Genovese backing. I don’t believe a word Natale says but can’t deny Joey getting indicted with two Genovese Capos isn’t a surprise giving the back and forth the two top families have with Philly Boss.

I don't know if you could call him a puppet, but geographically Joseph Ida was not all that far from NYC. I have read that he lived in New Brunswick NJ and/or Highland Park NJ, and I know that both those towns are about half the distance to NYC than they are to Philadelphia. Actually a little closer to the NYC than Vito's home in Atlantic Highlands. Of course that doesn't make him a "puppet" necessarily, but he was within less than an hours drive of meeting any NY boss in their home town.
