Zips in the Five Families - 05/12/21 08:43 PM

I wanted to to try and get a list going of "zips" that were in the Five Families since Galante. I'm not sure if it was Carlo Gambino or Galante who was the first to bring Sicilians over and induct them into there family? We have Celfu a zip who was running the Gambino's for awhile and then Cali before his death had incorporated them into the ranks. Do we see a trend of more and more of them getting into higher ranks and becoming bosses of the families? What is your guys opinions on the matter?

Carlo has been bringing in since the 40s. I had several who lived in my area. VERY close to him

Bonanno also always had zips coming to America and joining up with the Castellammarese branch in his crew

As we know the gambinos and bonnanos have the most zips thru their history and modern times. But how do the other 3 families compare?

I’d assume since the Genovese are kind of the most Americanized family they’d have less but since they’re the largest and most powerful I’m also assuming they have more Italian nationals than the Colombo’s and possibly the Luke’s

Can anyone shed some light?

I'll start with names I know and we can add and do a final list of members

1. Baldo Amato- Capo Bonanno 2006 Life in Prison.
2. Caesar Bonventre- Capo Bonanno killed 1984
3. Sal Catalano- Capo of Sicilian faction Bonanno arrested 85' released 2009
4. Onofrio Catalano- brother to Sal arrested in 85' not sure of rank in Bonanno family
5. Domenico Cefalu- Boss of Gambino family in 2011 till 2015? Cali took over and not sure his role now.
6. Pasquale Conte- controlled Sicilian faction in Gambino family, though born in NYC. Just an interesting note that he ran them.

Here is my biography on Paolo (Don Paolino) Gambino. I address the extensive alien smuggling network that he ran for decades with his brother Carlo.

The most recent name was Vito Grimaldi who held the most power amongst the Bonanno Sicilian faction. However I believe Grimaldi along w/ cammarano and zanccochio were shelved in 2019 by Mancuso. Have not heard anything about them since. The arrests and discovery of links b/ bonannos and Sicilians in castellemare should have provided intell about new links b/ both groups.

I'm so outdated with the modern Mafia. Grimaldi was listed as a soldier or did he get bumped up to Capo by Cammarano when he was street boss? Also, when did Cammarano get shelved in 2019? I saw an article stating when he was released in 2019 he was still active as street boss.

Cammarano and Zancocchio were acquitted the same week Mancuso was released (also the same week Persico and Cali died, so it was a strangely eventful one). Then a few months after the acquittal Jerry Capeci wrote an article about how Mancuso had shelved Cammarano, Zancocchio, Grimaldi and Grimaldi's son.

Apparently it was because Mancuso was unhappy with the trial strategy. To get Zancocchio off they cast doubt over his status as consigliere by pointing out how many other members had been identified as the consigliere in testimony during the trial (Vincent Badalamenti, Simone Eposito, Anthony Rabito, John Spirito). Mancuso was said to have taken this as a disrespectful remark about his inability to manage administration positions.

Though Mancuso could also just have put them all on the shelf because they posed a threat to him. After all, they were part of a rival faction and they tried to elect Cammarano as the official boss.

Mancuso put John Palazzolo up to serve as acting boss again, with assistance from a panel.
