1979 one of the most violent years of the mob? - 01/10/21 03:33 PM

Lately I’ve been thinking about specific years and how impactful or violent they were in the mob world. One year specifically that seemed to have a lot of violence and big mob deaths was 1979.

The Fall Out of the Lufthansa Heist- technically The heist took place in December 78 but the fallout and deaths of so many participants took place in the early months of 79.

The Demeo crew killings/Cuban crisis- the Demeo crew was doing a lot of killings in the late 70’s but obviously ran into trouble when Chris Rosenberg nearly started a war which led to multiple Cubans killed, an innocent college kid killed, and ultimately Rosenberg.

Carmine Galante whacked- this is obviously the most high profile of that year and maybe that decade

Neil Dellacroce indicted/Tony Plate murder- NYMafia made a great video detailing this and I’ve me tinned it a few times over the years

The Eppolito killings- Another high profile killings that had a shootout with cops and led to Nino being wounded and arrested

Interested to hear your thoughts about this and feel free to add more events that took place in 79

John Gotti whacked Tommy Desimone in 1979 and Jimmy Coonan was charged with the murder of Mickey Spillane. Indeed, 1979 was a deadly year in NYC organized crime history, possibly as deadly as 1930-31 during the Castelli-marese War.

.
. I doubt Gotti was the one who actually did the killing. I think Tommy Agro and/or other members of the Bergin crew actually did the killing

Re: 1979 one of the most violent years of the mob? - 04/25/21 04:53 AM

Joe Ianuzzi said Tommy Agro told him he killed DeSimone , a possibility as he had already murdered DeSimone's older brother and was known to joke about killing the third DeSimone brother and completing the DeSimone trifecta.
When Henry Hill turned informant he implicated John Gotti as the killer and reaffirmed it twice more after that. Allegedly, Paul Vario was having an affair with Karen Hill while Henry was doing time and Tommy DeSimone tried first to seduce and then rape Karen, after learning this, Vario then informed John Gotti about the murders of a Gambino soldier and of Billy Bentvena who were a close friends of Gotti's. I believe that Agro also stated that while Gotti was present, it was Agro who killed DeSimone very slowly and painfully. I couldn't see John being there and not getting a few shots in for his slain buddies but maybe he didn't want to get dirty.

Henry Hill was a known bullshitter was drunk/high most of them time until his death so take what he says with a grain of salt. I’m not saying Gotti wasn’t involved but I don’t think he was the hitman. Gotti had a lot of hitters in his crew like the Carneglia brothers, Tony roach, Willie boy etc that did the hits

It’s possible Johnny Gotti was the killer. He personally shot Vito Borelli a year later

It cracks me up when a wiseguy is labeled a bullshitter, show me a stand up gangster and I'll show you an undercover cop. Tommy Agro confirmed Gotti was present at the murder which was slow and painful, so while Gotti might have, or not, been the actual trigger man,. It would be reasonable to assume he was upset at the murder of his friend Billy Bats and probably got a few shots in before DeSimone met his maker.

17 bodies in a year?

Every 3 weeks you have to chop someone up? DAMN!
Chopping someone up comes up sooner than the monthly rent!

I remember Donnie Brasco movie mentioning how wiseguys don’t bring up the thought of someone who got whacked but, I can only imagine the nightmares and mental anguish the crew went through.

I believe the nypd said that they’re were 1700 mob murders between the early 70s and early 2000s
5 families and each family was atleast twice the size as any other family outside NY...

The NYPD Organized Crime Homicide Task Force was formed in April 1978 in response to 30 mob murders that were committed between Jan-March of 1978.....

It should not crack you up, and Henry Hill was barley a wiseguy at all. He was a hang-around con man for the most part. If you don't think there are stand up wiseguys, real ones, look at all the ones who took their sentences like men, or lived quietly till dying without going to prison., the Gotti, Johh Riggi, Gigante, al the ones still in prison and not ratting. Look at a Frank Costello. Now compare them to Henry Hill. See a difference?

I agree it would be easier to just kill them, but I find that the longer we research their killings the more the numbers change, usually going upwards. Chopping up one body would give a person nightmares, let alone more than that.

1700 where, worldwide? You must be counting people killed in movies too.

I guess relative to some other lying, thieving, murdering and utterly lacking any morals gangsters, yeah he was a bullshitter. However, compared to real stand up men like Rick Rescorla, Stephen Stiller or any man who puts in an honest days work, they're all a bunch of bullshitters who brought decades of misery on generations of New Yorkers for their own profit, so they're all full of shit in my book..

So you are on a morality kick and nothing more. Rick Rescorla was a hero as a soldier, I had to look him up, but what does his heroics have to do with the number of mafia members killed? Dumb! You are brining up people killed in 9/11, a tragedy, but to use them to make your point is disgraceful

Re: 1979 one of the most violent years of the mob? - 04/26/21 03:52 AM

I cited their names as examples of what a real stand up guy is, not any Mobster. Sure, I understand your point,, guys like Toddo Aurello, Dellacroce, Scarpa, Profaci had better reputations than Henry Hill but if you think they were loyal to anybody but themselves, that's just plain wrong and you know it. Anyone of those guys would have a civilian whacked, just so they could have an affair with their wives if they wanted, and they did many times. Like I said, sure there are stand up Mobsters, but that's relative to their lifestyle.
Rick Rescorla was head of security for Morgan Stanley and also perished on 9/11 after returning to the Towers to ensure everyone had evacuated the building, that's a stand up guy in my book.

Besides, you're the one who went off topic by questioning Hill's honesty, when I blew that premise up by citing that Agro also said Gotti was present you had nothing left so now trying to say that I went off topic when it was you because you couldn't prove your statement. The only thing that's dumb is your inability to have a rational discussion.

From78 to 88 there were a ton of mob hits. Probably the most lethal decade in the latter 20th century for the mob.

I don't see Tony Ducks letting another Family kill DeSimone. He used Varios son and Bruno to bring Tommy D to the "making ceremony". Now the rats like Casso, DArco, the Brooklyn crews weren't involved in the actual hit because they would have reported it. It's said they took Tommy D to the Bronx where he got whacked. None of those major Bronx guys at that time flipped mainly because th is were whacked in the mid-late 80s. I'd say once Bruno and Rugsy delivered him to the Bronx Tom Mix it took care of him using Buddy Luongo's crew.

Sounds like maybe you got an inside line and I can't disprove your theory and I could actually see that happening, now that you mentioned it. However, Tommy wasn't a made man yet and he whacked 2 made men both who were close to a Capo from the Gambino family. I could easily see Corallo throwing him to the wolves to avoid complications.
