The Smut Business - 01/04/21 09:10 PM

Pound for Pound, who was the biggest mob guy in porn?

Anthony Peraino (Colombo)
Frank Profaci (Colombo)
Mickey Zaffarano (Bonanno)
Matty Ianniello (Genovese)
Joe Brocchini (Lucchesse)
Robert Di bernardo (Gambino)
Roy Demeo (Gambino)
(Of course if this is missing someone, add to the conversation)

Who produced the best quality films? Who made the sleaziest?
Who had the most creative racket involving porn?

Re: The Smut Business - 01/04/21 09:48 PM

The Peraino brothers were national in scope. So was Zaffarano. So I think that speaks for itself.

Bobby Di Bernardo was also heavy into it, but years later got away from it mostly.

Ianniello was NYC based. So was Brocchini, except that Joe Bikini handled it from cradle to grave; produced his own films and books, and distributed them through a half dozen retail stores on 42nd St as well.......next level shit

Matty was heavy also. The Metropole Cafe (topless), a couple of machine joints, and whore houses along Times Square area. But he was very diversified in other things so it wasn't his main kazaam.

Frank Profaci had -0- involvement in smut.

AndRoy DeMeo?...... he was a complete jerk-off. He was onto it. But NOT nearly as heavy as the others.

@NyMafia correction, it was Salvatore Profaci, the other brother. I had to look it up but I knew I read that somewhere. Any assessment on him if you have any?

I take that Demeo was the sleaziest in your opinion lol

Seems that Matty (as far as this business went) was more traditional in his rackets.

Joe Bikini seem to have to most ingenuity (he will be in posted apart of my other thread)

Do you know of the Gambinos being involved before D.B?

Who had more pull in the industry? Peraino or Zaffarano (I guest I'm saying who's name carried more weight? More name value?

And I'm guessing Time Square was just a haunch for filth back in the day lol

Re: The Smut Business - 01/04/21 10:42 PM

Sally Profaci had -0- to do with smut as well.

Frank Profaci (joe's brother)
Sal Profaci Sr. (was Joe's brother)
Sal J. Profaci (joe's son)
Sally "Curtis" Profaci (joe's nephew)

None of the Profaci's were ever involved in porno. Fat Sal Profaci was "alleged" to have run a "cat house" in South Jersey, but I can't speak to the validity of that either way.

Funny how Joe Bonanno claimed to be against smut yet he had guys like Mikey Z in that biz for years.
@Dob_Peppino, Were there any other Bonanno guys involved in this area?

well you have to remember that the porno business didn't really get started big time until about 1967 or so, based on new obscenity laws. Joe Bonanno was already being deposed by 1966 or so. Fighting a war and kicked out completely by 1967-68. So he really missed that entire racket.

Mickey Zaffarano's involvement in porno was really after Bonanno.

When you say produced the best quality films do you mean made copies or actually produced porn flicks as in...producer?

DB by far was the biggest. Star Distributors was his company on Lafayette St NY. Some production in the building but mainly distribution. Teddy Rothstein was a big player. Milky Way Productions (Screw Magazine) had ties to Albert Gallo. Frank DiMatteo worked/ ran Milky Way.

I meant quality in production (producer) not distribution (copies) but if you know of them selling cheap tapes that popped on a rewind, have at it. That would be interesting (or funny) to know as well

Re: The Smut Business - 01/06/21 01:53 PM

Joe Bikini, Tony the Whale Peraino, Mickey Zaffarano, and DeeBee each had the actors and made and produced their own smut films.

Joe Bikini, and Zaffarano also had control right down to the retail stores. Cradle to Grave. I don't know (or think) of the others having that type of control. But of course its possible
