The Cufari/Scibelli Regime of Springfield, MA

Since the 1920s, this iconic satellite regime of New York’s Genovese Family has operated a highly successful crew up in Massachusetts. First under the auspices of capo “Big Nosed Sam“ Cufari, and later under his successor Francesco “Frankie Skyball” Scibelli.

The more I continue to research the mafia regime based in Springfield, Massachusetts, the more I believe that Genovese consigliere Mike Miranda's brother was probably the catalyst or "seed" for the Luciano/Genovese Family to first plant their flag in Springfield soil.

Antonio Miranda first relocating up to that City in Massachusetts where he settled down and made a home is the first time that a New York City based Luciano Family-connected mob figure was documented there.

From that point forward we have Big Nose Sam Cufari, Frankie Skyball Scibelli and his brothers. Right next door in the City of Worcester we see Frank Iaconi and his brothers, and later Carlo Mastrototaro..... the Genovese had a virtual "lock" on the area from that point forward.

In recent decades we had their successor Adolfo (Al) Bruno, and a string of lessor mob lites who continued to run things....But the original "seed" to me was Antonio Miranda who of course had the strength and backing of his powerhouse brother, capo and later consigliere Michele (Mike) Miranda, and underboss Vito Genovese.

My question to forum members is this; does anyone know of an earlier "Luciano-Genovese" Family connection that would have opened the door for the borgata to start operating in that town and general territory? I know that there have been many who did in the years afterwards, but before Tony Miranda??

He was not directly with the Springfield, Massachusetts crew, but is anybody familiar with Cosmo (Pinky) Panarelli?

He was a "soldier" within a very small regime operating out of the City of Worcester, MA. A very low key Genovese caporegine named Frank Iaconi led this faction. There has never been much written or documented about Iaconi or his men aside from naming a few of them... I plan to change that if I can.

I am currently trying to put together an expose' on this Worcester faction. Probably the most well known mafiosi some forum members may be familiar with is Carlo Mastrototaro. He's dead now but became a major player in this crew and was known nationally.

Thomas (Champ) Sanfratello is another member.

I am putting this out there to all forum members that if in fact you have any knowledge that you think would be helpful to me, I would greatly appreciate your input. I'd like to make this story line as complete as possible and not a regurgitation of the little info that's always been available.

Again let me state that I greatly appreciate whatever you can provide me.

.......And hopefully it'll make for an ass-kicking storyline on "The Iaconi Regime of Worcester, MA"

sincerely, The Other Guy!

Iaconi goes way back with genovese and is the first new england capo but was based in worcester. 45 min east of springfield. He was close to ray p. He dies young in 57 58 think he died in jail to tax evasion. Big nose sam cufari becomes capo but is based in springfield. Worcester back then was a very transient city being in the city of new england. Think his sons were inducted members to but they might have been put with the new england family it gets blurry. The huge crap game was split between the 2 families 60/40 in Worcester. And the numbers. There was a few other guys but they were blimps on the radar and been dead forever

After iacono dies all the guys report to springfield. But since worcester closer to boston and providence it's used as a center spot to meet. They also were seen in nyc alot because there always problems with the porno rackets between the 2 families

Thanks pmac. I do know that there were several Iaconi brothers such as "Chester" Iaconi, etc. A Collaro, Sanfratello as I mentioned, Mastrototaro, Panarelli, etc.

They had a tight little crew but as you well know not much is available about them. I actually did a few bios on Pinky Panarelli, etc., which is on our Button Guys website. But I'd really like to do a full story if I can gather up what I feel is enough good info.

Thanks for your imput
