"Mafia,Mobster" shows on current TV - 03/25/20 02:30 AM

Has anyone noticed when there is a mafia series on A&E...
History Channel...etc etc .....they always have the same
Subjects......Gotti....Lansky...Seigel.....Lufthansa Heist..JFK
vs the Mafia.....on and on.
How come these mafia series don't attempt to freshen up the content and explore new subjects?
You never hear about Zerelli....Maggadino...Catena.....
Lonardo.....heck you rarely see anything about Accardo..
Kinda frustrating to be honest

I agree but those are the most well known ones so they will always show those. However there use to be that show Mobsters that showed different guys like Danny Greene

The reenactments. They'll be talking about Meyer Lansky and suddenly an actor who looks like Aaron Eckhart is walking around the room with a baseball bat. Just cringe worthy.

You also should keep in mind that there is alot of material available about the gangsters you cited including film and pictures. Any documentaries about lesser known gangsters would require quite an investment of resources to research them in the hope that viewers would tune in.

I've said it before, I'd love to see more shows talking about the smaller families in more detail or some of the most influential families that were around during the heyday that are defunct for the most part now i.e. KC, Tampa, Detroit, etc.

Because I think for the most part, the avg person have all heard the names Gotti, Luciano, Gambino, Lansky etc.

I think shows talking about the others that I've mentioned will help connect the dots for people as to how things were orchestrated with topics such as the Las Vegas skim, Cuba, and JFK to name a few.

Gangland Wire (Amazon Prime) seems interesting. It uses actual audio from F.B.I. wiretaps to tell the inside story of how Chicago and Kansas City mob families gained and lost control of Vegas.

It's easy to make a show about Gotti because unlike many of these other figures, there are reams of archival footage of the man with which to splice together a 22-44 minute show. Much tougher to do shows on people who so effectively flew under the radar that there's not much to show beyond still photographs and badly written/directed/acted re-enactments.

Well produced. The biggest complaint a lot have is that the information is very basic and often includes long running misnomers. They did cobble together great archive footage of mobsters. This combined with Kurtis's crafty storytelling made them a great watch. Can't find too many of Kurtis's docs on youtube though.

They have a podcast too with frequent new episodes.

They tend ramble on a little bit, but they're funny guys who are well informed on the midwest families, especially KC and the Vegas rackets. They often bring on experts on other regions too.

I only agree about the less covered families and individuals. I would love to see docs about Johnny roselli, Joey the clown Lombardo, tony zirili from out of the nyc area. Within nyc area, the campisi family, gallichio’s of Newark that family wasn’t
With any family just a family of gangsters on their own. The mob didn’t want any part of them, and kid blast gallo, tony roach rampino to name a few.

Lot of crappy tv mob shows I would almost say aleast mobwives on vh1 looked better or should I say produced better. The Gotti jr doc on a&e was pretty good

I agree that Gotti Jr. Doc was good. A&E knows how to do these things.

I Agree..Kurtis had a series in mid 90s called MOBFATHERS that was well done..I have a VHS taping of the Nicky Scarfo episode but it is very weathered & old..unwatchable basically.

Here's a good one narrated by Bill Kurtis. Early 80s. "Target Mafia". Covers pretty much the whole history of the basics with some of the usual misnomers but well produced and narrated, great archive footage.
