It seems like a lot of the Gambino Sicilian faction had properties there. If I'm not mistaken I remember reading a court document from either the 80s or early 90s that mentioned the Dominican Republic. It may have even been John Gambino or one of his brothers. I'll try to find it.

Hopefully someone who knows about their activities there will see this and tell us more.

Here's one. Just search Dominican using the "find in page" feature.

Erasmo Gambino lives there, cousin and brother-in-law of the Gambino brothers, in 1981 they found in his car the body of Pietro Inzerillo.

La Romana is in the southern part between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana. That's where a lot of the resorts are so I wonder if anybody is involved with them.

Ive been to La Romana (I was born in the capital) it’s the most “first world” looking area in the southern part of the country. I never heard of Italians living there until recently.

Plus, guys of that caliber operate with little to no police scrutiny since the law enforcement branch in the country is so corrupt, they just pay a few thousands here and there and even the DNCD (Dominican version of DEA) will turn a blind eye to whatever you’re doing.

I know from personal friends and family actually go to DR and Cuba more often than they do to the United States. Especially in rural towns in Sicily a lot of them follow communist ideology
