He ordered the deaths of Randolph Pizzolo and Michael Mancuso. He conspired to kill a prosecutor. And that's off the top of my head. The other families were and are relatively peaceful by his standards. My question is, was Basciano the last, dying remnant of the old days, the days where guys like John Gotti, Vic Amuso, and the Persicos ordered deaths wholesale?

After his prosecution, and being a candidate for the death penalty, it seems mob whackings rapidly became a thing of the past.

After Basciano and Allie Boy's brief reigns at the top, it seems that mob families, by and large, have made it a point to change the way they do things at administration level.

Those two guys didn't know it at the time, but they would become important reference points for the way the mob does its business in the here and now. It's largely more circumspect, and these guys are a major reason why the mafia got a wake up call.

Think of guys like Daniel Leo, Frank Cali and Dominic Cefalu. Other people have more knowledge than me, but these guys have/had a lot less internal strife that we are privy to, yet they are/were all heavy hitters in the modern mob game.

Meanwhile, 400 (Montreal) to 500(Toronto) miles to the north, it's like Al Capone's era up there with daylight whackings in public on almost a weekly basis. What a difference.
