Rare picture of Mark Reiter (left) and Gene Gotti. Reiter was a Gotti pal, and a huge drug trafficker. He owned a multi-million dollar penthouse on Manhattan's 59th Street. The previous owner had been Calvin Klein. He has been in prison since November 1987.

Five people, including a man said to be a Gambino crime family associate, were convicted of all counts yesterday in a Federal narcotics and racketeering trial in Manhattan.

The jury convicted the reputed mob associate, Mark Reiter, 40 years old, of Manhattan, and his four co-defendants of racketeering and conspiracy, which each carry maximum 20-year prison sentences.

Mr. Reiter, who also faces drug charges in Brooklyn with Gene Gotti, the brother of John Gotti, the reputed Gambino boss, ''was a major heroin distributor operating at a very high level with organized crime,'' United States Attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani said after the verdict.

In addition to the racketeering charges, Mr. Reiter was convicted under the so-called drug kingpin statute of running a continuing criminal enterprise, which carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life without parole.

Federal District Judge Richard Owen scheduled sentencing for Oct. 24.

The case gained public notice last week when Judge Owen jailed Wilmer Grier, the defense lawyer for one of Reiter's co-defendants, on civil contempt charges because of repeated lateness and absences.

Is that life without parole?

Penalties in the us are crazy. All these yanks missed the boat when they first got off the boat. Should’ve gone Canada or even the uk. US penalties are nuts. To get a full life sentence you have to kill multiple people over in the uk. And even then there’s a chance you’ll get out. A famous cop killer from the 60s got out quite some years back. In the US he would’ve been put down.

Recent Narducci bust would’ve been community service over here at the most lol. People talking about 5years in the US..

In addition to allegedly distributing narcotics, Reiter was charged with killing Beverly 'Shamecca' Ashe, her brother Steven Ashe and Barry 'Bones' Wilson in 1982 and 1983.

Reiter get 2 life sentences because killed and sold drugs but long john martorano'son get life in the 1980s for drug trafficking without killing people and get out after 30 y and a long legal battle, that there are the guidelines like the 3 strike law where if you get sentenced for a serious crime and two relatively minor offences, would get a long sentence.

I know Reiter was big into the Heroin game. So did he supply the majority of the Black gangs through the Gambinos in NY or just the Barnes and SMM crews?

Two reputed mobsters indicted in drug ring

NEW YORK -- A federal grand jury has indicted two reputed Gambino crime family mobsters and five other people on narcotics, murder and racketeering charges for their alleged roles in a heroin smuggling ring, it was announced Tuesday.

The murder charges involve the killings of seven people and the attempted slaying of two others, according the indictment returned Dec. 3 and unsealed late Monday.

Among the seven people named in the indictment are Mark Reiter, 40, of Manhattan, described as a Gambino family associate, and Angelo Ruggiero, 48, of Cedarhurst, N.Y., a reputed captain in the crime family. The Gambino group is considered the nation's strongest Mafia organization.

The indictment charged that Reiter supplied heroin to James Jackson, whopleaded guilty four months ago to narcotics racketeering. Jackson, reportedly cooperating with the government, is awaiting sentencing for that conviction.

Jackson was identified as the head of a ring responsible for distributing heroin in Manhattan, the Bronx, Bridgeport, Conn., Boston and Washington, according to U.S. Attorney Rudolph Giuliani.

In addition to allegedly distributing narcotics, Reiter was charged with killing Beverly 'Shamecca' Ashe, her brother Steven Ashe and Barry 'Bones' Wilson in 1982 and 1983.

Ruggiero is accused of distributing 'at least 100 grams of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of heroin' in June. He also was accused of engaging in a September telephone conversation with Reiter involving the distribution of heroin.

His alleged actions made him part of a racketeering 'enterprise' that existed since 1980, the government said.

Ruggerio is reputedly the former chief assistant to alleged Gambino family boss John Gotti. He was a defendant in the drug conspiracy trial in Brooklyn with Reiter, Gotti's brother, Gene, and eight others that was declared a mistrial two weeks ago.

In that case, Reiter was charged with conspiracy to distribute large quantities of heroin and faced up to 15 years in prison. Ruggiero was accused of running the drug conspiracy and faced life imprisonment.

'From approximately 1981 through 1987 (Reiter) supplied heroin to the Jackson organization,' the indictment said.

'At various times and in various locations (the organization) distributed heroin under the brand names 'Red Apple,' 'Purple Rain,' 'Mellow Yellow,' 'Solid Gold,' 'Taster's Choice,' 'Murder One' and 'E.T.''

The indictment said the heroin was packaged in quantities known as 'quarters' which sold for $50 or less.

'The Jackson organiziation used violence to protect from competition the territories where the organization distributed heroin,' the court papers said.

It said 'at various times' the group 'also distributed cocaine.'

Shamecca was out on $50,000 bail and was sitting at the Monarch Tavern in Washington Heights when a guy came from behind in a white ski mask, shooting her in the neck and the back of the head with a .45, killing her. Witnesses thought it was a black man who wore a white mask. Barnes says, they were right, although I did not order this hit, my nephew Mellon carried out this job. He got so entrenched with the Italian mafia and Shamecca knew a few secrets about his operation, he didn’t want her to rat on him or his Italian friends. When an Italian supplier told him, if he carried out the hit, Gotti and the Brooklyn crew would be endeared to him. Mellon jumped at the chance to impress Gotti.
Around this time, Barnes’ learned that Guy Fisher (the new kingpin) and the organization, known as ‘The Council,’ had put out an $8 million dollar contract on his life and his children’s life. Guy allegedly wanted Barnes’ entire family taken out.
Meanwhile, Tee pled guilty to running a heroin ring and got a 10-year sentence. She also turned over $10 million dollars of Barnes’ money to the Feds. Barnes’ wondered, where was the rest of the money? The money he left in hundreds of safe deposit boxes all over the world. He figured, Tee probably got greedy and kept that money for herself.
The Feds also told Tee that they would reduce her sentence if she testified against John Gotti, she declined, she was too scared and she remembered what happened to Shamecca.
