I hope they do that. A lot of interesting history (much of it Mob related) in that time and place.

I feel ya Moe, but this prequel sounds very good. They can do a lot with that era in Newark, the corruption of the mob and city officials, mayor Hugh Addonizio above all, basically bankrupted the city. In this video (at 41:30) former police luitenant Freddie Martens explains perfectly what went wrong with the city of Newark in those days..

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 03/11/18 04:45 AM

Addonizio as mayor was basically having a made guy as mayor . Wise guys literally ran the city when he was mayor from what I have heard
And although that was a disaster for the city the riots is really what destroyed Newark, with many businesses and blue collar worker tax base leaving the city
In short order, and which they never recovered from . I have heard some crazy riot stories like the wise guys putting men on the rooftops in areas where it looked like
the riot might spill over into their neighborhood and having to use lethal force to push the rioters back .

However Newark is on its way back up , driven largely by booming economies in Manhattan and JC and it’s 12-20 min train ride to them. It still needs more time but in 10-20 years
It is likely to be a city that has expiedenced well above average real estate appreciation . I just hope the long term residents have or start buying real estate in their neighborhoods
Otherwise they are going to be pushed out with nothing like what happened to BK, JC and even Boken residents. It’s kind of sad to be honest and I think a lot of BK families moved
Out to NJ so they will be double fucked. With the WTC PATH built for $4B and looking incredible, Harrison path being re done for $300M, I see a $1B Newark Penn
Station make over in the near future (5-10 years ). Some majors developers have likely sniffed this out
And have been building new class A/B type residential apartments right around Newark Penn.

Chase is into music, he made the movie sort of based on his own band in the '60s. Hesh was already based on Morris Levy. I bet the music biz plays and big role in this.

Actor Alessandro Nivola (Face/Off, American Hustle) is in talks to play Dickey Moltisanti in The Sopranos prequel movie for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.
Alan Taylor is set to direct The Many Saints of Newark, which returns David Chase to the world of The Sopranos for the feature prequel, which he co-wrote with Lawrence Konner.

Anthony Imperiale

Anthony M. Imperiale Sr. (July 10, 1931 – December 27, 1999) was a member of the New Jersey State Senate from Newark, New Jersey.[1]

Biography
He was born on July 10, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey. He later served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. In the 1960s he opposed desegregation busing in the United States.

During the 1967 Newark riots, he advocated armed white self-defense, forming the volunteer North Ward First Aid Squad ostensibly to escort North Ward residents, most of whom were Italian-American, through racially troubled neighborhoods. The group was accused of vigilantism, and Governor Richard J. Hughes called Imperiale's followers "Brownshirts". In 1969, the group disbanded.[1]

Imperiale was elected to the Newark City Council in 1970, and to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1971. Running as an independent, he received the most votes in a field of 7 candidates with 13,857. Democrat Frank G. Megaro, who received 12,436 votes, also won. Defeated were incumbent Democratic Assemblyman Paul Policastro (10,825 votes), incumbent Republican Assemblyman C. Richard Fiore (8,215 votes), Republican Ralph D'Ambola (7,351 votes), Del Mauro (3,323 votes), and independent Nicholas A. Ciufi II (2,729 votes).[2]

In 1973, Imperiale ran as an independent for the New Jersey State Senate, seeking an open seat in the newly created 30th district, which comprised Newark's East Ward, and Harrison and Kearny in Hudson County. Imperiale, received 24,756 votes (49%), against Democrat Gregory J. Castano with 18,286 votes (36%) and Fiore, with 7,131 votes (14%).[3]

Imperiale ran for Mayor of Newark in 1974 against incumbent Kenneth Gibson, but lost a runoff with 43.7% of the vote. He was defeated for re-election to the State Senate in 1977 against Frank E. Rodgers, the Mayor of Harrison, New Jersey. He was again elected to the State Assembly in 1979, this time as a Republican. He defeated three-term Democratic Assemblyman John F. Cali. He gave up his Assembly seat in 1981 to seek the Republican nomination for Governor of New Jersey, finishing 6th in a field of 8 candidates with 5% of the vote.

Later, Imperiale made unsuccessful bids as a Republican for Essex County Freeholder, Essex County Sheriff

He died on December 26, 1999 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey.[1]

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/23/18 09:17 PM

The movie Summer of Sam did a pretty good job of showing how intolerant some Italian Americans were in that era, which is strange because at the same time guys like Joe Colombo were pontificating about how Italians were being persecuted.

If they were (they weren't), you'd think they'd have a bit more empathy.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/23/18 10:00 PM

Many Italians were being persecuted, just not Joe Colombo.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/23/18 11:10 PM

White people weren't being persecuted in the 1970s but if you have examples to the contrary do share them.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/23/18 11:18 PM

Well, maybe not in the '70s, but certainly historically. Joe Colombo linking himself and his friends to such Italians is a joke, though. They too were persecuting and extorting Italians.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/24/18 01:33 PM

I agree with DB. Newark is on the way up. Kearny and Harrison were starting to boom when I lived there. I lived there briefly because of the Path train. I saw it as simply an extension of the Manhattan subway.

The Ironbound section has always stayed nice. North of Penn, not so much.

Well up to the end of the 19th century you would be hard pressed to find anyone who wasn't persecuted in America if they weren't of English, Scottish, Welsh or German descent.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/24/18 04:20 PM

Italians were persecuted later than the 19th century.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/24/18 06:32 PM

I'm sure you can dig up some sociological texts to back up what you're saying.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/24/18 07:06 PM

Better than just blindly declaring that something doesn't exist, without offering any data or research to support it.

19th and 20th century European immigrants faced a lot of discrimination until the post World War II boom, when the GI Bill and the private home lending industry, which was generous to just about anyone who wasn't black, Latino or Asian, enabled many of them to assimilate into the middle class.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/24/18 07:28 PM

I'm not the one making erroneous claims so the onus isn't on me to support anything.

First, you implied they were being persecuted in the mid 70s and now you're rowing back to the mid 40s.

As you're the one making these claims you will have no problem linking some sociological texts to compliment these assertions.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/25/18 12:34 AM

Where's your sociological texts? Why is it always the person you're arguing with who's tasked with finding some sort of Harvard thesis to back up every single thing they say, yet you're just allowed to spout off whatever comes into your head? Italians weren't persecuted past the 19th century. Why? Because Moe says so, that's why. End of discussion. That was fun.

The Moltisantis of Newark. Think I know where they're going with this. No wonder they're casting Dickie Moltisanti first.

Quote
Richard Moltisanti

Dickie moltasanti
Dickie Moltisanti with possibly a little Christopher

Former soldier in the Soprano Crew. Died in the mid-1970s, Married to Joanne Moltisanti née Blundetto, father of Christopher and cousin to Carmella. Dickie was in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and later served time in prison, making it unlikely that he spent much time with his family when he was alive. Dickie was killed during Christopher's infancy, right outside the house while bringing TV trays home. In 2002, Tony Soprano told Christopher that Dickie's killer was Detective Lt. Barry Haydu, who had just retired from the force. Tony delivered Haydu to Christopher Moltisanti as a part of his process of bonding Chris to him and slowly easing him up the family hierarchy. However, when confronted by Christopher, Haydu denied ever having heard of Dickie Moltisanti and claimed that someone was "obviously" setting him up; however, he inadvertently admitted knowing Dickie Moltisanti by stating "Look, whoever told you I had anything to do with his death is lying!", before Christopher ever mentioned Dickie's death, whom Haydu supposedly didn't even know. However Christopher has previously stated "He was my Father". Haydu's last words were thought to have been “ I’m sorry
”, however that was a line from the movie playing on the t.v. in the background. Although, Magnum PI, a popular 80’s cop show starring Tom Selleck, was on the television and the dialogue didn’t call for someone to yell out “I’M SORRY” repeatedly. So that was definitely Haydu! Tony remembers Dickie as a "stand up guy" and describes a lot of his positive qualities to Christopher. Dickie once took on a whole crew from New England and brought the war home to their turf. Tony also remembers that Dickie was killed because of a beef with Jilly Ruffalo, a man he was in prison with. Jilly murdered Dickie's cell mate and Dickie gouged out his eye in revenge. According to Christopher, Dickie also struggled with problems of alcoholism and drug addiction.

Hey so is the guy who played Johnny Boy Soprano in the flashbacks confirmed for this or what? Is he a part of this film? How could he not be.

Re: New Sopranos Prequel Being Made - 11/25/18 02:45 AM

The problem is, that actor is now 20 years older than he was in at least the first flashback scene in season 1. Likewise the actors that play everyone else. I'm betting they just go with someone different.

Who wasn't persecuted in America way back when? Even people of German descent were being persecuted during the war because of what was happening in Europe. It'd be easier to find an ethnic group outside of Anglo-Americans that wasn't persecuted.

It took until the 60s for there to even be a president who wasn't Protestant and look how that went over.

I think we can meet halfway and say that Italians, Irish, Jews, blacks, Latinos, Armenians, even Germans have all experienced persecution of some kind during the 1900s but in the case of Italians, persecution wasn't really a problem in the 70s.

Stereotyping on the other hand? Maybe, but Joe Colombo being the face of the Anti-Defamation League didn't help.

Please be good please be good.

sopranos is best tv series period and not just for mafia fans.

shame that james G passed. A true Sopranos movie with the surviving characters with Tony would have made hundreds of millions. Imagine a 3 hour mob epic Sopranos movie with Tony. It would feel like combining the best 3-4 episode long story arc into a movie.

Oh and Italians were persecuted for years. In the 60s people hated Kennedy and Italians because the protestants thought that "papist in rome" would control Kennedy.

In the Deuce, his character reminds me of AJ's. It's just a role. I'm feeling good about this. It's been a long time coming. How come Dr. King earned a doctorate in 1955? Because he wanted it and he worked hard for it. Something many blacks, whites, Latinos, still can't figure out. That poor guy must be turning in his grave when he sees how pathetic the lower class is. There's only one sure way out. Work Hard!
