- 'An absolute monarchy' -

"It's infinitely less powerful than before. After the deaths of (boss Bernardo) Provenzano and Riina, the only one at liberty is being hunted by the police," the head of Italy's national anti-mafia body, Maurizio De Lucia, told AFP.

Multi-murderer playboy Messina Denaro, one of the world's most-wanted men, is seen by many as Riina's natural heir but has been on the run since 1993.

"Cosa Nostra is a very strictly structured organisation, similar to an absolute monarchy. While the king still lives, it's not possible to think of picking a successor," De Lucia said.

"The question now is whether the organisation is strong enough to identify and appoint an heir. Many of its bosses have been arrested, and enormous amounts of its patrimony has been seized" over the years, he said.

Re: Sicilian Mafia boss Toto Riina dead at 87 - 11/17/17 04:36 PM

The Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) on Friday ruled out the possibility of a public funeral being held for Mafia boss of bosses Totò Riina. "A public funeral is unthinkable," said CEI Spokesman Father Ivan Maffeis.
"I remind everyone that the pope has excommunicated the mafiosi.
"The condemnation of the Italian Church regarding this phenomenon is unequivocal. "The Church does not substitute the judgment of God, but we cannot confuse consciences".

And that says something. The amount of violence he unleashed was unheard of, even among other mafiosi.

Will he attempt to become capo di tutti capi in hell by massacring the devil and all his family members and allies?

Some comments by the expert John Dickie.

What happens now? My guess: the political drift within Cosa Nostra continues, and with it the organization's decline.

Cosa Nostra is weaker than it has ever been. The state is better at fighting Cosa Nostra than ever. Both of those things are legacies of Riina’s rule.

Meanwhile, income is falling, which means less money to keep prisoners and their families happy—so more chance they will turn state’s evidence

On 2 occasions, senior mafiosi tried to pull the Commission together, which could have opened the way for a new leader to emerge. But both times the police were watching and captured them all.

The state has been turning the screw. Riina was on his way to a meeting of the ruling Commission when he was captured in ’93. The Commission hasn’t managed to meet since.

Meanwhile, police and investigators have learned the lessons of Giovanni Falcone and his fight against Riina in the 1980s, and offer a much, much tougher opponent.

Hence Cosa Nostra’s division. Riina’s successor Provenzano didn’t have the authority to deal with it. Cosa Nostra has remained pretty much ungovernable.

However, Riina’s allies are terrified of that the exiles will return and exact vengeance for the slaughter of the 1980s.

Riina drove many of his enemies into exile. Since his capture, they have been angling to return, looking for allies in the old country. The mafia is weak and needs its American links more than ever.

Excellent quotes! He was a horrible boss who’s brutality led to the mafia becoming very weak in Sicily. The Mafia was near complete control of Sicily, making billions off of drugs along, and they fucked it all up.

Sicilian Mafia still controls almost all of Sicily, they still have close connections to freemasonry. They will never be powerful as they were back in the day,but still one of most powerful organisation in the world.

Dickie is not wrong, but Provenzano's strategy of survival took the mafia underground and infiltrated business, law enforcement, and politics even more.

Even if Law Enforcement wont let Cosa Nostra be i dont think they would regain the power they had because of Ndrangheta, they to strong right now. And they will continue as i see it because i think 80 % of their income is outside Italy. So there would have to be alot of countries working together to bring them down. Nevertheless, If Toto wasnt captured the ndrangheta would never be what they are today. Him an Provenzano was on another level, they did in Europe what Chapo and Escobar did in Souh America, thats pretty sick.

"I'm not mistaken when I say that my father's ability to challenge the Colombian state has taught him from Totó Riina,"

Anyone who inspires Pablo Escobar to become what he became(toto) must be considerd as one of the greatest of all time (from a criminal perspective)

Peter Edwards writes about Tomasso Buscetta and how Buscetta's flipping helped accelerate Riina's downfall. Buscetta lived in both Toronto and Montreal at times. We know that he played cards at Il Gatto Nero in Toronto in the late 1960s and that Vito Rizzuto's father-in-law lived with Buscetta in Toronto, as both of them were in hiding. The article states Buscetta was living on Northcliffe Blvd. when he was in Toronto--not sure whether this is where he and Rizzuto's father-in-law lived--but I never knew he lived so close to Mike Racco's bakery on St. Clair.

Ruin of Salvatore ‘The Beast’ Riina began on College St. in Toronto

An interesting episode of Riina was the pact with the Nuvolettas and the confrontation with Cutolo: the "professor" urinated him on the shoe.

Cutolo was even more crazy than Riina lol and still alive and kicking in prison.

Paraphrasing Vachel Lindsay who wrote this poem after the death of Leopold II of Belgium, I have allowed him to dedicate it to Riina.

"Listen to the yell of Riina's ghost / Burning in Hell for his hand-maimed host / Hear how the demons chuckle and yell / Cutting his hands off, down in Hell".

Another thing prosecutors in Caltanissetta in January this year partially rebuilt the existence of a superior structure, A sort of “super Cosa nostra” or “Cosa nuova”. In this "secret" area the successor of Totò the beast could have been raised.

I'm disgusted instead,in a novel far ahead of time when was written aka the Gattopardo is written that "Sicilians are sleeping of a so deep dream that they will not even wake up for who that will comes to bring them the best gifts."
After 1992-1993 when the mafia could be destroyed now it has been reformed and I am shocked at how much the Riina family has yet to do.

I will never blame children for the sins of their parents and I reckon it wasn't easy for her growing up. A kid never asks for the situation and place where it is born.. That being said though, the lady is smart enough to know how the picture she posted on Facebook would be interpreted..

DOXA 2019: The Godfather of Godfathers gets the epic he deserves with blood-drenched Corleone

It’s more chilling than The Godfather, grislier than Goodfellas, and all true. The blood-drenched rise and fall of Salvatore “Totò” Riina gets the epic documentary it deserves with Corleone, in which some of the most notorious Mafiosi in Sicily’s brutal history go on-camera to describe the slaughter they committed under the command of the “Godfather of Godfathers”. During the gang wars and escalating tensions of the ’80s and ’90s, nobody in Palermo was safe.

First it's showed at festivals so it will probably be available later this year.
For the first time on screen appears Giovanni Brusca, the other turncoats accepted to speak are Gaspare Mutolo, Giuseppe Marchese and Gaetano Grado.

Gaetano Grado was Bontade´s feared killer. he once killed a group of teenagers only because they were making noise in a restaurant he was dining and interrupting his meal: two of them were strangled and the remaining three gunned down.

They were a hot heads , waiter tried to calm teenagers down but wasn't able to , then he asked Gaetano for help , when he tried to calm them down , one of teenagers(Paolo Morana) lifted up his shirt and flashed 2 guns at his belt , to which Gaetano responded: "Look son, these two guns: I'll shove one in your mouth and the other up your ass." After that he just returned to his table and continued having lunch. In next few days they were all killed.
