Valachi - 09/05/17 08:49 PM

What did Joe Vilachi get out of giving his evidence?

I know he thought he was marked for death and he received that famous kiss from Don Vito.

But the guy died in jail, so what was in it for him ?

Valachi got himself out of the Federal penitentiary in Atlanta, where Genovese already had marked him for death, and into a well-equipped, private arrangement at the Federal pen in La Tuna, TX, where he lived out his days in relative comfort.

It's better than being stabbed or beaten to death by the guys in jail. And his ratting embarrassed Vito Genovese, whom he hated.

Valachi get 15 y in 1959 for drug trafficking and would done time without flip but thinked that genovese (that was in the same prison) blamed him for his sentence so valachi killed an innocent inmate because thinked was a mobster send by genovese;for avoid death penalty flip and until his dead in 1971 lived in the suite aka a confortable cell in La Tuna. I think that if he would lived much longer he would be out or would suicide like tried before.

Did his testimony help with any convictions? The government just needed someone to blow this thing of theirs out of the water and he did so on national television. Did be fill in any missing pieces? This kiss off death? Why would you tell your victim that he's going to die rather than making him think the opposite? Genovese was wiser than that.

No convictions, only gave the proofs that a criminal organization like the american mafia exist despite what Hoover said in the last 30 years. Genovese thinked that Valachi wouldn't have the balls to flip not so wise at the end.

The government already knew about all the things valachi told them.Greg scarpa was feeding them his info before they turned valachi. All valachi did was put it out there for them in front of the cameras.Thats why they named the five family's after the bosses who were fronting them at the time..Valachi had the info of the years around the time the commission was formed.

I suppose a cushy cell was a better option.

Phil Leonetti was also a guest of that same suite.

So was Fat Vinnie Teresa

Valachi wasn't high enough up in the Mob to know a lot. But, what he told was more than what the FBI knew at the time.

bobby kennedy was the one who was insturmental in valachi flipping, kennedy wanted to embarrass hoover and the fbi, after valachi's testimony, seen by millions, hoover could no longer say their was no mafia.

Actually it was the Appalachian meeting, where Hoover could not deny that there was a criminal organization that operated across the country. Kid Twist mentioned it, but how he kept mixing up three different organizations, many just thought he was talking only about Lepke. Local law enforcement, FBN, Secret Service knew it exists, while the FBN knew it stretched to other countries.

Although he was a mere button man, Valachi was a soldier in the Greenwich Village crew then ran by Anthony "Tony Bender" Strollo. So I wouldn't discredit everything he said to the Committee. Never much of a earner but he was a well versed assasin. I mean the guy shared a cell with Vito!
