Mafia boss, wife gunned down in a shop near Foggia - 05/24/17 02:39 PM

(ANSA) - Foggia, May 24 - A local mafia boss and his wife were gunned down in a cosmetics shop at San Severo near Foggia in Puglia Wednesday. The couple were killed by several gunshots, police said. The husband was identified as Nicola Salvatore, 56, and his wife as Isabella Rotondo, 55. The boss, who had a criminal record for drugs, eluded another assassination attempt in December when he escaped with an abdominal wound when he and another drugs convict were attacked with a machine gun. Police said the double homicide was probably linked to another murder in San Severo last October. Bari anti-mafia police are investigating. Puglia's mafia, the Sacra Corona Unita (United Holy Crown, SCU), is Italy's fourth and smallest mafia after Calabria's 'Ndrangheta, Sicily's Cosa Nostra and Campania's Camorra.

The SCU is more violent than Sicilian Mafia and 'Ndrangheta, they should get more media attention.

Yesterday Antonio Petrella, 54, and Nicola Serrelli, of 43 years, uncle and nephew, were killed in the late afternoon in an ambush accomplished on the outskirts of Apricena, in Foggiano, with shots fired from a Kalashnikov, a shotgun and a pistol. One thinks of a settling of scores within the local underworld.

Thanks for the updates Hollander. The Italian organizations interest me. I don't know much about the SCU. Looks like we might have the beginning of a war on our hands.

In an Italian documentary about the SCU I watched, they said it's the only mafia-type organization that theoretically could be eradicated from the region because, unlike the other 3 (Cosa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta and Camorra), they don't have a long history that makes them go back to some historical aspects of local culture, with many "grey areas": even when it's not outright crime, it's silent complicity by many local citizens who aren't members or associates themselves, but are either afraid or just don't trust the authorities, even the ones who don't take bribes. In the Apulia region on the other hand, the mafia is not THAT well developed, it has been formed in a "real" sense of the word only in the first 80s, when Giuseppe Rogoli started organizing the prisoners (including the ones that were about to be released and therefore could extend their power to the streets), to resist the attempt by Raffaele Cutolo and his camorra to take over the region. Rogoli was backed by the 'ndrangheta boss Umberto Bellocco and succeeded in preventing the camorra to take over, but his organization still wasn't as strong as the other regions, some groups started separating from the main SCU organization and even today experts say that it's incorrect to say that all the mafia in Apulia is SCU, in reality it's just the biggest and strongest, while the others are separate groups with other names.

Anyway, the point is that, being relatively young / recent and not yet solidified as an organization with powerful connections or radicated in local culture, THEORETICALLY they could clean up the region if they really wanted to, it would be much easier than Sicily, Campania and Calabria. But, as usual, they don't want to. Even if the authorities maybe aren't corrupt as a whole, but many of the ones who aren't corrupt, are LAZY, and that's not really better...

It seems the current war in Foggia goes abroad. Saverio Tucci, 44, from Manfredonia has been found shot dead in Amsterdam. Tucci, known as Angel Face, had criminal records for mafia association and drug trafficking and was a leader of the Società Foggiana. They already caught somebody who confessed immediately.

State and Carabinieri police dealt a huge blow to the mafia in the area of the southern city of Foggia with the execution of arrest warrants for 30 people in a big operation.

The suspects are alleged members of the Moretti-Pellegrino-Lanza and Sinesi-Francavilla mafia clans.

Around 10 of the suspects are convicts who were already in jail.

The accusations include alleged mafia association, extortion and attempted murder.

According to official case documentation, it is suspected, among other things, that managers, former managers and a former coach of Foggia soccer team were pressured by the mobsters to sign a player.

Foggia are currently second-last in Italian soccer's second tier, Serie B.

La società foggiana is involved in a war which claimed around 30 lives in the last two years.
For the first time police showed the structure thanks to a turncoat; it has ranks and rituals similar to the 'Ndrangheta, but probably it was Raffaele Cutolo that started ceremony of initiations and ranks in Foggia, the 'Ndrangheta copied the old Camorra structure at the ending of 1800 and Cutolo wanted to rebuild it.

Two cousins Giovanni Iannoli (33 years) and Claudio Iannoli (43 years), were arrested by police and carabinieri for the attempted murder of Marco Raduano, the 36-year-old boss called "Faccia d'Angelo". The interim order was notified to both of them in prison. According to the indictment, the two allegedly attacked Raduano on March 21, 2018, at the specific request of the boss Girolamo Perna, the latter was shot dead on April 26 this year.

The Iannoli are well known to investigators because of their ties to the young clan leader killed just over a month ago, and for whom they would have managed the drug trade between Gargano and Albania.

Re: Mafia boss, wife gunned down in a shop near Foggia - 06/07/19 10:26 AM

For the first time, police said, the San Severo mafia has been accused of mafia conspiracy.

07 June 2019
Mafia, they were preparing an ambush against rival clans: 8 convicts arrested in Puglia
FOGGIA - Anti-mafia blitz of the police of the provincial command of Foggia to arrest eight convicts accused of possession and carrying of weapons, aggravated by the purpose of benefiting their mafia: according to the indictment the weapons were allegedly used against some belonging to the opposing clan.

The operation, coordinated by the DDA of Bari, was carried out in Trani, Milan and Trinitapoli, where the outdated but bloody feud between the two sides that compete for control of illegal activities in the area has recently flared up again. In addition to numerous searches, the military carried out a detention order in prison against the eight suspects.

Re: Mafia boss, wife gunned down in a shop near Foggia - 06/08/19 09:33 AM

They have defined the San Severo underworld as "a Camorra-mafia criminal association" , close to the "Società Foggiana" (the ties between La Piccirella and the Moretti clan are known , ed ) but at the same time strongly independent and able to penetrate even beyond the provincial borders. "Criminal activities went, with regard to drug trafficking, in Campania and Holland".
Pretty lucrative, for every kilogram cocaine sold for 50 thousand euros, they paid 38 thousand euros in Holland, so they earn 10 thousand euros. 2,000 euros per kilo are needed for transport.

Here worse than in Calabria, the Foggia mafia is more brutal than the Ndrangheta (but the clans lack their vertices)
The report of the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate of the second half of 2018 compares the 'Fourth Mafia' of Foggia to the Ndrangheta, calling it still more brutal.

FoggiaToday
20 july 2019 11:07

"In the Foggia mafia there are forms of emulation of" Ndrangheta- like "behaviors : similar affiliation rituals, division of roles, qualifications and hierarchies defined with the typical jargon of Calabrian crime, as emerged in the" Tenth Action "operation of the 30 November 2018 ". The Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate says this .

"However, the cruelty with which organized crime continues to manifest itself constitutes, to date, the clear distinction with the 'Ndrangheta, which instead seems to prefer a silent presence on the territory, avoiding sensational actions in general" reads the report in the second half of 2018.

The articulated criminal picture of the province of Foggia was, in the second half of 2018, strongly conditioned by the intensification of the law enforcement activities put in place by the police forces in the aftermath of the serious episodes of blood that occurred in 2017 and the first part of 2018 , with the result that almost all the clans were deprived of their summits because they were arrested.

Nevertheless, the analysis of internal assets confirms that, although the division between the three distinct organizations of the Foggia society , the Gargano Mafia and the Cerignolan underworld , continues, the search for synergies continues in order to overcome the contingent difficulties, particularly where the balances are not still defined (as for the city of Vieste), that is to say they are disjointed by the institutions' preventive and repressive interventions.

In the first place, elements supporting this key can be deduced from the central position assumed by the Foggia mafia through the progressive expansion in the territories of the province and the search for convergences aimed at a monopolistic management of illicit activities (in particular, of the drug trafficking).

The numerous arrests and important seizures of drugs carried out, in the period, throughout the Foggia area attest, in fact, this territory as a fundamental junction in the marijuana market, whether it is sourced from Albania, or whether it comes from substantial local plantations . In both cases we are witnessing an ever greater involvement and integration of Albanian groups in the territory, together with local subjects, in the cultivation of marijuana.

In conclusion, if drug trafficking constitutes the fundamental business underlying the illegal economy of the Foggia mafia groups, extortion and crimes against property are confirmed as sectors of primary interest.

However, it is worth noting the worrying evolutionary profiles that today characterize the recycling activities put in place by the daune criminal organizations, which show ever more considerable levels of specialization and ability to exploit particularly exposed “environmental” contexts (such as companies and companies in economic difficulty ), using, if necessary, colluded professional figures.

The interest of criminality towards the public administration, already emerged during the dissolution of the municipal administrations of Monte Sant'Angelo and of Mattinata, has been confirmed, during the semester, in the numerous interdictive provisions issued by the Prefect of Foggia against companies resulted in some way conditioned by the local associations. It should be noted, in particular, the provision, for connections with the Romito clan, against a company that owns a maritime state concession for the management of a beach establishment. The administrative measure was adopted in implementation of a legality protocol stipulated between the Prefecture and the coastal municipalities, aimed at extending the preliminary anti-mafia assessment to companies that carry out accommodation activities.

As regards relations with other criminal organizations, especially foreign ones, particular attention continues to deserve the phenomenon of illegal hiring in the region, as well as for the aspects of illegality that involve the agricultural supply chain, also for the profiles of public order and security: the already mentioned massacres of the road of 4 and 6 August 2018, in which 16 young African laborers lost their lives, are a tragic example.

The problem is fueled by the local economy which does not hesitate to exploit low-cost clandestine labor, which requires a reflection on the need to restore an ethical work supply chain.

A 53-year-old man, Roberto D'Angelo, car dealer, was killed tonight in the city of Foggia. The man was hit by two pistol shots while he was behind the wheel of a Fiat 500 L. According to a first reconstruction, it seems that the victim was parking the car when he would have been joined by a motorcycle from which shots had been fired. Police investigate links with the current feud across the province which has claimed dozens of lives in recent years.
