Johnny Apes Monteleone - 08/31/16 04:36 AM

Any info on him? Not much about him other than he ran the Outfit's Chinatown crew for a while before passing away in '01, and that he was close with Mark Polchan.

There's some decent stuff on him in Frank Calabrese Jr.'s book

Cicero guy who worked for Steve Annoreno and the LaPietra's in their loanshark operation as an enforcer. He later went to Bridgeport with LaPietra but continued living in Cicero until he passed. Just down the street from Freddy's.

He was really high up in the Outfit before his death. He was probably the top active guy on the streets in the late nineties.

Basically ran the mob for about 8 years. Very old school and well liked.. Once Sam carlisi went away in 1993 ,was running the mob until he died. Controlled the Laborers Union as well as the hotel and restruant employees union and had Ronnie Jarrett Wacked out in 1999 and like I said ,basically ran the mob from 1993 until 2001.

DiFronzo may have been the boss but Monteleone was the guy running things on the streets and doing the dirty work. Pretty much everyone else was dead or in prison.

Monteleone did some time for contempt by refusing to testify about some car bombs in Milwaukee. He ended up serving four years (1986-1990) which was pretty steep for contempt. He probably died at the "right" time because if he would have lasted another couple of years he would have been caught up in all the Family Secrets stuff.

It seems like quite a few Cicero guys ended up running in the 26th St crew

Yeah I was curious as to whether he was well liked, what type of leader he was. Thanks

The Caruso's were under Johnny Apes then?

The same Anneoreno that Frank Calabrese Sr first worked with when he started loansharking?
Wow if Johnny Apes worked for Steve Annoereno, it must have been quite the ascension if he ended up succeeding the LaPietra's

Calabrese began in the Outfit with Larry Steubich, then got hooked up with Angelo LaPietra. Annerino ran LaPietra's loanshark racket and used guys like Frank Calabrese, George Vertucci (Paul Carparelli's uncle) and Louie DeRiggi to collect his debts. Steve probably wasn't bossing Frank around and Annoreno later had a falling out with Angelo (after he got out of prison). The story goes that Angelo had Annoreno stabbed in the chest as a warning to leave the rackets. Annoreno ran a successful Italian Beef place later I think.

Mike spano Sr. On a wiretap in the late 1990s and nick calabrese both confirmed Johnny Apes basically succeeded Sam Carlisi and that Auippa was the boss until he died in 1997. First Carlisi stepped up for him then Johnny Apes..

I see, how accurate do you think Nick Calabrese's testimony and the Family Secrets book was?

Don't want to speak for ChiTown here, but I believe Nick's testimony was more or less accurate. Nick was either extremely truthful or a good liar. Considering the emotions he displayed on the stand I'm going to go with the former.

There were several "Annerenos/Annerinos"; Steve, Sam and John. Steve was the guy Chi talked about who worked under LaPietra and Sam was a low-level guy involved with the chop shop rackets in Jimmy Catuara's crew. He was later killed by the Wild Bunch. Sam's cousin John, who worked for the city of Chicago, was also killed after a botched murder plot involving the death of a cop. John's death was more than likely a personal matter as opposed to anything Outfit related.

Steve was the one that Frank allegedly said to LaPietra "if you don't get him away from him I will hurt him" right?

Well put. I don't know much but I learned about Stevie Annoreno's falling out with Angelo from those Calabrese prison tapes. Frank Sr. sat around with Ricci and Doyle telling them the story of Angelo stabbing Stevie and they all laughed. I'm sure Calabrese was beefing with Annoreno - I just think Annoreno had more juice at the time.
