Do soldiers run their own crew?

Do soldiers run their own crew? - 03/12/16 12:38 PM

Do soldiers have a crew of their own that they are put in charge of when they are made? Im wondering if the promotion of being made comes with being a gang-leader with your own underlings.

Its a newbie question I know, but trying to learn more about how the structure of the mob works. I was slightly confused when I read that the Philly mob has more soldiers that it does associates so it seems like the soldiers in that family are basically on their own.

Roy Demeo had his crew from the 60s when was made in the 1978 he was a soldier with a 5-6 associates ner him and if wasnt killed if the gemini twins or dinome would be made he will be a capo.

Its normal that a made man had more associates under him, because he can earn extra money without do nothing, second this money with the money that made are able to make a reputation of good earner and climb the ranks. More important if the mae men go to jail is de cure that the money can go to his family and dont let it broke.

Most soldiers have a crew. This may not be true for Philly, but in a city like New York the ratio is c. 5 associates for every soldier. It's also very common for associates to have a crew.

Absolutely, so do associates in many cases. Here's a good example of the Bonannos with a crew in Florida led by associates Thomas Fiore and the Rubbo brothers. Alessi also has ties to New England.

Technically speaking, it would be a sub-crew. DeMeo, for example, was a soldier in the crew of captain Nino Gaggi. And DeMeo oversaw his own smaller crew of associates.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

So does a soldier who is in charge of his own (sub)crew wield the same power as a captain does over his soldiers? For example, I know that when I captain tells someone in his crew he has to kill someone or beat someone up he has to comply no matter what. Does the same apply to a soldier giving the same order to one of his associates?

Yes because a capo must ask the ok for whack a made man while if the associate don't do what the wiseguy say he could kill immedly without ask permission. De Meo in fact killed men of his subcrew without must ask gangi permission.

The Bath Avenue crew for example, led by Paulie Gulino in the late 80's/early 90's..

Once you're made, you earn the right to start your own crew, officially called ''Cliques'' I think.

Good info everyone.

Makes me realize how powerful a capo really is. I used to think he would have only 10 guys in his crew, but it seems that including associates he's in charge of about 30-50 guys

any killing needs to be approved by the boss..unless your life is in danger at that moment. yes plenty have been done , but that is not the rule..you just can go around killing non members it does not work that way..

Isn't that the purpose of a captain?

Some soldiers have more and some have fewer associates in their crew. Some associates worked for more than one crew if they were not on record. Guys like DeMeo and Spilotro had big crews. DB was a capo without a crew.

I know that...

I meant as far as the thread title

Captains run the crews...so anything under a soldier ultimately falls under that captain I would assume

Bronx, What if a soldier has an associate or associates who makes money for him and the Borgatta and they are on record, If I was a skipper why would I want to meet him in case he's a rat or an undercover. I'll be grtting my cut from the soldier anyway.

in todays times, you are correct have buffers, but with hearsay laws your dead anyway.. you really do not have to meet the skipper, your soldier just gives him your name and the biz they are in ..that puts you on record with the borgata through that process.

How big was Spilotro's crew in Vegas? In general how big is typically a soldier's "clique"?

bronx is right as in there are really no set amounts and can vary widely from family to family...even from crew to crew...

But if I had to put a number on NY families average members of soldiers to a crew...I would say roughly 8-10 if I had to guess..

Then you figure on what...2 to 3 associates per soldier? So I guess it depends on if you mean how many made guys are in a crew under the capo
...or counting the made guys as well as any associates that are officially on record. If you count them, you are looking at 30 total guys in a crew. If you only want to count made guys you are looking at closer to 10.

IMO

So is there hierarchy between associates as well then? I mean does an associate who leads his own clique outrank an associate who works directly under a soldier?
