Martines could possibly be Northern Italian, you get a lot of last names that don't end in a vowel with Northern Italians. My last name doesn't end in a vowel and my last name wasn't changed one single letter at all zip zero percent when my Grandfather left Northern Italy for New Jersey.

Mob guys with facial hair.

Riccobene (Phil.)
Martines (Phil.)
Lucibello (Phil.)
Scarpa (Colombo)

Casso & Amuso were on the run so that doesn't count.

Mousie" Massimino (Phil) has facial hair

Re: Frank Martines - 10/11/15 01:23 PM

That's right. Forgot about him.

Seems to be a more of a Philly thing.

There's that picture of Charlie Carnegs with a beard too but IDK if he was in the wind or not.

I don't think it's Northern. In North Italy this kind of surnames are basically the same as others but without the final vowel. Martines (or Martinez) sounds more like a Spanish surname.

Re: Frank Martines - 10/11/15 01:40 PM

Or possibly a Portugues name. Fernandez (Sp) Fernandes (Port)

Re: Frank Martines - 10/11/15 02:01 PM

There are Martines in Italy, the name would have originally been Spanish and likely dates back to when the Spanish Bourbons ruled the Kingdom of Naples/ Kingdom of Sicily. Many stayed in Italy, had children, etc. Over time the name spelling changed from the 'ez' suffix to the 'es'

Many different ethnicities settled in italy over the years and some surnames reflect that. Persico (means Persian), Tedeschi/Tedesco (means German), Greco (duh), Mormando (means Norman)

Re: Frank Martines - 10/11/15 02:06 PM

Heh.

The story of our origins is really fascinating.

I was thinking Martines kinda looks Spanish or Portuguese.

And maybe I am really reaching here but Carmine Persico actually kinda looks Persian - particularly in the pictures of him from when he was a teenager; really swarthy.

I knew an Italian with the surname "Cois" once. I don't even know how you pronounce that.

Re: Frank Martines - 10/11/15 03:18 PM

Lots of Arab blood in Sicily, so its possible one of Carmine's ancestors was some sort of Saracen, lol.

It can also mean peach, but he certainly isn't one in the looks department.

Oh wow, that's really interesting, thanks for that. "Tedesco" looks like it is probably cognate with words like "Teuton", "Deutsch", and "Dutch".

No one is really sure where it came from originally, but one theory has it that the word "Mafia" itself might be a leftover Arabic word.

IDK if they look Peruvian. That may be an exaggeration.

Peruvians are very dark and their bone structure is different.

Ron Previte is definitely someone that could pass for African-American.
