Not sure if this has ever came up. But can a guy who has been an associate for nearly 20 to 30 years walk away from the mob with out any repercussions?

Absolutely...if he never received his button, he's free to go...unless he was a big earner, then he's gonna catch some hell unless he's got some really good story that someone in power is gonna be sympathetic to...but in today's world the rules are only the rules when it benefits the guy above you.

well yea he'd probably be well-respected and would be allowed to walk away.
